pinstripes are pretty awesome - vertical ones also are slimming.

Okay yeah, I don't get this as an "issue" but I think wearing Ben Sherman every day is perfectly reasonable and I've owned a houndstooth couch, so....

I xpost because I'm civilized.

Well, "issue" is relative.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:19 (fourteen years ago) link

the issue is that checks and plaid are fashionable?

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:20 (fourteen years ago) link

That they've reached a critical mass in fashionability, as if they're color change shirts in 1992 or something.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:21 (fourteen years ago) link

there doesn't seem to be as much plaid in us stores, i guess

ok looking around the room here.. madras plaid scarf, grey plaid faux-isabel-marant blouse, buffalo plaid coat (last year, gap), another tiny plaid faux-isabel-marant top, two wool plaid scarves, ll bean plaid flannel shirt from the kids' department, vintage pendleton wool plaid shirt, vintage plaid coat (going to sell that though, i don't wear it), and plaid vest. there's probably more around i didn't look too hard

i like the red & black shirt in the middle.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Laughter to plax's picture.

Yeah, Hypercolor.

Just got a duplicate post message.

I own this exact shirt!

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:25 (fourteen years ago) link

i just like it, fashionable or not, because it usually comes in excellent colors and is also good for mixing patterns with stripes or tweed. oh i have another vintage wool plaid shirt and a couple more scarves. would like some trousers but finding a flattering pair in a small enough plaid.. too much trouble and money

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Ooooohhhh you mean like lumberjack-inspired flannels in various "hard-wearing" plaid colorways?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:27 (fourteen years ago) link

The first three are all tolerable in plax's pic, even if I'd probably only wear the blue one, but that photo's funny. Oh oh oh. I was at this dive bar in downtown Orlando watching some nineties style indie band and this girl made a googly face, maybe sort of unintentionally, and I laughed and sort of pointed at her, crooked my elbow I mean, and did so in front of her. My friend Katie overheard her and her friend talking:

"The one in the plaid shirt." (It was the same new plaid shirt I mentioned upthread.)

And Katie and I were later like, We're all wearing plaid shirts.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a couple of those! been debating asking my dads to buy me this shirt for christmas if it comes in a small enough size, also it is from small town minnesota mill, which is pretty excellent

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Cos that looks like a return to "dad" shirts from LL Bean, if you ask me. Plus a bit of the 70s country-western thing on the left there, with the diagonal and the pointy pocket flaps.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes! u just call them check shirts and its understood here (i think) so i didn't really know what else 2 call them

xpost 2 laurel

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

this is how every single person i know including me dresses is all i'm sayin

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Eh I hate this pattern/style, but I feel like it's so Midwestern it's giving me hives.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

the blue one is ok too - the others are a bit too "contrast-y"

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't care for the country-western or 70's style ones for myself. they're ok on other people just not my style. prefer the grunge ones/"dad" shirts & really love the one i have from ll bean actually, the largest sizes in the boys' department are nice and i think it cost less than $20.

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:31 (fourteen years ago) link

actually now that i think abt it i'm pretty ok with this as a thing so...

Laughing at this clip with the sound off.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

The quality and warm fuzzy factor of a really worn-out LL B shirt is undeniable, but I just can't stomach them anymore as a fashion thing. But then I never liked grunge.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i liked grunge a lot. i guess current outfit could pretty much be grunge years except i didn't get it from thrifts (striped sweater, plaid scarf, down vest, jeans). could be ready to go to marching band practice

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha I didn't dress like that when it WAS the early '90s and I was in marching band, but then plaid flannels were never "out" in MI so grunge bringing them back was sort of unnoticeable from the status quo....

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "indistinguishable" was the word I was looking for there.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

looking at ebay postings for vintage plaid in which these 17 year olds are wearing exactly what i wore at that age XD ripped tights, combat boots, baggy plaid shirts, and denim cutoffs

kids these days! get a new style

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link
