Yay, apparently I did it right: SENDSPACE FILES FOR ALL!! I'll try and get everyone taken care of tonight; if I overlook anyone, just give me a reminder in a day or two.

xpost - Pretty cool that Bob still lives in Michigan. Info-wise, the best website I know of is segerfile.com. The creator flat-out claims it's the best Seger site on the web, and it's hard to disagree.

So apparently a bunch of the songs (e.g. "Mongrel") are only 15 seconds long? Did something go wrong in my download? Are any of the rest of you who got this finding the same thing?

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe those are the wma files? i was actually just coming on here to ask if anyone knew how to convert wmas to mp3s ... The mp3s sound great, btw! But I can't play wmas on my itunes ...

tylerw, Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe that's it...I converted the wma's using some freeware but maybe it screwed things up.

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:02 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, it's def. the wma conversion. I need to try another program, I guess. (on mac)

― tylerw,

would dig Mongrel; am presently rocking to Ramblin' Gamblin' Man (the album); "Black Eyed Girl" is pretty heavy!

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

no problem. i'll wait a bit to see if anyone else wants and i'll plan on sending this afternoon

controlled noise pollution (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

The version of iTunes for PC will automatically convert WMAs to MP3s or M4As when you drag the WMAs into the library. iTunes for Mac does not do this, sadly. I took Myonga's comp to my work and converted it there.

yeah would love to get the mp3s of that stuff ... or m4as, whatevs.

whew the "Love The One You're With" on this comp is smoking.

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^ totally.

Hey, this is totally sweet! I'd also love the mp3s!

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Sunday, 22 November 2009 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Meaning that I got the zip from sendspace, the songs that I can play are really great, and I can't play wmas.

Also, I was enjoying how, when heard from a distance, Bob Seger doesn't sound that far from Captain Beefheart.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Sunday, 22 November 2009 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

If it's still possible, I'd like a CD-R of this, thanks.

jetfan, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:14 (fourteen years ago) link

how did he get away with "persecution smith"? on the one hand, it doesn't really seem like parody. on the other, it's one of the most shameless bob dylan imitations on record--everything from the melody to the arrangement to the lyrics to the singing style. although i noticed that seger does get it on "white soul" howl in there, very undylanesque.

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Monday, 23 November 2009 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^yeah, he readily admitted to its being a total Dylan rip, except it's about Mr. Smith instead of Mr. Jones...

OK, round two! I'd considered checking back to see if there were any issues with the Windows Media files. I'll convert the remaining wmas to mp3 and re-transmit (or send a CDR) upon request to anyone who still needs one

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 23 November 2009 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd prefer mp3s---I've tried to convert the wmas and failed.

Yah Kid A (Euler), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 06:55 (fourteen years ago) link

It's weird how he goes from the ballad of the yellow beret to 2+2=?
Thanks very much for this, btw.

Euler, maybe cym, i yousent mp3's to your gmail add'y on Sunday i think it was

xpost I also found that striking, the array of points on the political spectrum I encountered listening through the set.

make love to a c.h.u.d. in the club (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, he even says "go ahead and call me yellow" in 2+2. It's like an answer song to himself.

outdoor_miner---thanks! I received Mongrel and it's awesome! The wma's are in the compilation of early singles that MVB sent; I think there are some songs from Seven in that batch that I don't have, and I'd love to hear them. Obv. you guys are doing the work and if I'm being too demanding then just ignore me.

three weeks pass...

In a perfect world, this would be about Myonga's CD-R (which I might decide to take to desert island, if I could only take one album, btw):

BOB SEGER’S GREATEST HITS IS THE DECADE’S BEST-SELLING CATALOG ALBUM

Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard Confirm Title’s Unparalleled Success, Approaching Nine Million in U.S. Sales Alone

Hollywood, California – December 16, 2009 - Bob Seger’s Greatest Hits is officially the decade’s best-selling catalog album in the U.S., it has been confirmed by Billboard and Nielsen’s music sales tracking system, SoundScan. Since its 1994 debut, Seger’s Greatest Hits has sold close to nine million copies and enjoyed an unbroken two-year streak on the Billboard Top 200 before moving to the upper reaches of Billboard’s Catalog Albums chart for 660 weeks.

Myonga, if you're still offering, I'd love a copy of your comp, mp3, CDR, whatever works for you. Thanks!

dad a, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link

scored a 45 copy this morning of bob's *if i were a carpenter/jesse james* single on the detroit label, palladium. sounds great.

now i want a cdr! i forgot to ask for one. myonga if you could send me a physical copy i'd send you something cool back.

scott seward, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Scott, the satisfaction of filling a hole in someone's collection (and amazement that I own something that you lack, aside from Uncle Sam's original-nude-cover "Heaven or Hollywood") is its own reward! I wouldn't know where to begin asking for something in return.

Dad A, if you've got no preference, I'll send you the Sendspace link when i get home. (Probably preferable to relying on the post office at this time of year, it just now occurs to me...)

I wouldn't mind an honourable mention in the "2009's Best Reissues" thread! (Make my mother proud)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 18 December 2009 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha, I actually considered voting for the CD-R at the top of my Pazz & Jop ballot. Probably would have, if it had an official name and fake label or whatever. (Maybe should have anyway, but I chickened out.)

xhuxk, Friday, 18 December 2009 22:34 (fourteen years ago) link

But actually, it's a very late 2009 release, right? So if Myonga gives it a proper name (on Myonga Records??), maybe I'll pencil it in for the next year's ballot. (A shoo-in for the #1 spot!)

xhuxk, Friday, 18 December 2009 22:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I encourage this idea!

sleeve, Saturday, 19 December 2009 01:02 (fourteen years ago) link

i'll vote for it next year!

scott seward, Saturday, 19 December 2009 01:16 (fourteen years ago) link

MYONGA VON AWESOME!

I hope the P&J still exists for 2010. Because I hope there are enough bona fide critics around here to put this thing on the chart then. Because I hope that that could get his label to wake up, pay attention and disseminate this properly.

dad a, Saturday, 19 December 2009 05:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Aw, you guyz...(blushes)

Seriously, tho, Scott & dad: I need your email and/or home addresses before Tuesday, otherwise you'll have to wait 'till the new year when I return from my home away from home (on the Michigan-Ontario border y'all).

So Myonga, we still need an official title for your CD-R!

And in other Seger reissue news, my better half gave me that 1966-1967 CD boot (KWR-7033, "2005 Alternative Edge Productions," available afrom Midnight Records) for Xmas; I'd asked for it before Myonga made his collection, and Myonga's is definitely way more comprehensive, but I'm still glad to have both. At least 1966-1967 has a title! Plus a familiar badass alley photo of a teenage Bob on the CD cover (with totally incongruous late '70s photos of him on the other side.) And mainly, four tracks that didn't make Myonga's disc -- "Florida Time" (Beach Boys-wannabee surf-rock), "East Side Sound" (revving dragster rock instrumental version of "East Side Story"), "Very Few" (post-doo-wop), "Heavy Music (Part 2)" (15 seconds longer than the original version, and my ears say not quite as wild, a bpm or two slower and a decibel or two less loud, and Bob says "it's a brand new bag now" in the middle and adds another line or two here and there, and the deeper-and-deeper orgasmic break buildup sounds slightly less raunchy I guess -- what the story, again, of why he re-recorded it?) 12 songs total (compared to Myonga's 27, which obviously covers a much wider span of time), but here's one time I don't mind being a completist. (Oh yeah, sound quality -- you can definitely hear cracks and pops, so I get the idea it's all recorded directly from old 45s.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 26 December 2009 19:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Howbout we call it Never Mind the Bullets Here's Early Bob Seger :D

About those absent tracks: "East Side Sound" I don't find particularly interesting; "Florida Time" I excluded because I believe that Bob doesn't appear on it at all, aside from some backing vocals (maybe); "Heavy Music" is in fact my own edit which I should've retitled "Part 3", and which consists of Part 1, with Part 2's "N.S.U., S.R.C..." couplet grafted on top (somewhat sloppily). And yeah, in retrospect I wish I had included the Young Rascals-ish "Very Few", even though it's wildly atypical. I guess I'll just have to offer to email those absentees to whoever wants 'em (I totally empathize with completism!)

Also, did I send out a faulty copy of "UMC"? I was looking for it on my hard drive last week but could only find an incomplete version barely a minute long - the full thing's three minutes and change. If anyone didn't get the complete track, I'll re-send that one too...

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 28 December 2009 10:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm sorry to be a pain about it, but do you have anyway of sending out the WMA tracks as MP3s instead? I've tried to convert the WMAs to MP3s without success. If no that's cool; I understand that it's a hassle to do this.

Euler, Monday, 28 December 2009 10:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Not a hassle at all, I've already done it. I'll send the sendspace link when I'm back from out of town after New Year's.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 28 December 2009 16:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Never Mind the Bullets Here's Early Bob Seger

EXCELLENT title! Now let's just hope everybody remembers it, come 2010 Pazz & Jop time. (I'll do my best to keep it fresh in people's minds.)

And yeah, totally agree those 4 other cuts on 66-67 range from expendable to negligible. Not complaining about your selection at all!
