haven't heard the album, whiney's twitter review seemed in line w/ my general impression. she comes off like, i dunno, a mom trying to be 'down' or something, i feel embarrassed when i hear her.

or like a nerdy kid sister?

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 14 November 2009 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

that single is a mess -- sloppy

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Saturday, 14 November 2009 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

scott you should sell that story to kid sister's publicist.

samosa gibreel, Saturday, 14 November 2009 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I fux with "Pro Nails" but I could barely make it half a minute into "Right Hand Hi". "sloppy" otm, shit is a mess

cumlord carabinieri (The Reverend), Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:14 (fourteen years ago) link

quite some achievement to think of someone going by the name "kid sister" as someone's mother

she comes across as solange sans vicious streak to me

disagree that "right hand hi" is at all sloppy, its constituent parts fit together really well imo

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 November 2009 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I like both "Right Hand Hi" and "Pro Nails" fine, fwiw, but don't think either track rates as one of the best on the album. (Off hand, I'd probably take "Big n Bad," "Switch Board," "54321," "Get Fresh," "Control" and maybe "Life On TV" over either them, not to mention "Family Reunion" from Dream Date.) Totally don't comprehend Whiney's "Mom" complaint, either (and even if I did, Moms don't necessarily make bad music).

xhuxk, Sunday, 15 November 2009 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Oops, actually (duh), Whiney's not the one who mentioned Moms. (He says: "When the cool kids invite you to their party and turn out to be as boring and talentless as you suspected.#1.5") Still don't agree.

xhuxk, Sunday, 15 November 2009 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

guys I just mean she sounds really square, like she's rapping a bunch of slang she learned last week in a 'rapper voice' she just made up, not that hard to comprehend

some dude, Sunday, 15 November 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

if you want i can keep it simple and just say she has no fuckin 'swag'

great point

Yeah but Whale > almost any band ever. (NB: this only applies to We Care; I love All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones but it was a clear step down and then they disappeared.)

Exactly! i mean this kid sister guy only has one album and it wasn't even prduced by Tricky nor does it feature lady Gaga as far as i know

lady gaga

the whale EP (pay for me) with darling nikki is my fave whale thing by far.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I have never heard of this before, "Pay For Me" is a dope track though. I am pretty sure that We Care will lead off the rotation for my upcoming road trip.

Attention every electro bandwagon-jumping MC in the UK. Listen to this record and take notes on how to do it properly.

Kanye's verse is probably the worst thing here. The 'Love On A Real Train' sample probably the best. This is all just so much fun. Stupidly enjoyable in the most route one, unchallenging way possible.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 20 November 2009 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

pete rock sampled 'love on a real train' earlier this year

other than the pfork review this seems to be pretty critically well received.

ice cr?m hand job (deej), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I like this OK. Still nothing as immediately great as "Control," which came out two years ago, but "Right Hand Hi" and "Life on TV" are pretty good.

is the actual commercial version of this album a continuous mix like my promo? cuz that's part of what i like about the album. does anyone know?

scott seward, Friday, 20 November 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Kanye's verse is probably the worst thing here.

haven't heard the song in question but you can pretty much c+p that for everything kanye does now

I don't know if it's just the smurfiness of it or what (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

the song kanye is on is reeeaally old and while matt's not wrong about his verse, it's not actually bad and way better than most stuff he does nowadays.

(this album is lots of fun, i like it a lot)

lex pretend, Friday, 20 November 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

kid sister is one of the few performers around who's this goofy but still endearing to me

lex pretend, Friday, 20 November 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Also her record company are really stupid for not giving this a massive push over here. It's the one kind of rap that Britishes are immediately predisposed to like.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 November 2009 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

next march, apparently, sigh. idk "pro nails" and "beeper" never did anything commercially despite reasonable promo pushes.

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 November 2009 13:40 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that performance is great, really suited to the song, which by the way is the most fun thing i've heard in forever. be great if everything started sounding like this soon.

samosa gibreel, Saturday, 21 November 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes.

I think I soured on this once I realized that there was no song on it that I liked enough to put on my nearly 80-track best of 2009 playlist. Except for "Control," but I already put that on my 2007 playlist.

Finally getting around to hearing this, its a so-so album but I really fucking love "Switch Board".

Did you hear the Sound Opinions interview, Jon? She came off as really likable in that, I thought.

Its on my iPod, but I haven't listened to that episode yet. I'll probably hear it tomorrow.

Green Velvet as well? Awesome. Also Kid Sister + Nina Sky could be fantastic. Gucci less so.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 10:28 (thirteen years ago) link

lol @ whiney dissing kid sister upthread. dude you rep for kanye & jay-z.

it's a really really good look for kid sister to rap over high-bpm jacking club music like this anyway, the breathlessness of her flow and energy she brings to proceedings really works on it, far more than on hip-hop beats. it's like a workout.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 10:30 (thirteen years ago) link

the green velvet track's a proper collab (and not the only one they've done together to my knowledge)

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Kinda predictable that Kid Sister works so much better over Ramadanan and Green Velvet than she does slowing things down for Gucci. Listened to Ultraviolet again the other day and it's still so much fun - Willow Smith could do worse than go down that path.
