Well, at least he didn't depict Hasan to suit his own stereotypes.

I haven't been following the news. They were talking on the news about financial connections and some of the things he said and people he talked with online. They've indicated that he was upset about the Iraq war and being deployed and remarks against him for his religion and ethnicity. I haven't heard anything that suggested it being an organized attack, or there being a conspiracy. I think the FBI was investigating or had investigated him, or at least collected data about him, before the shootings.

I mean, he could have been depressed and at the end of his rope, and the thought of going to Iraq and possibly killing Muslims maybe helped push him toward the nihilistic feelings required to shoot a lot of people in some likely suicidal last act.

I don't get it. Werewolf samurai? Trade "partners"?

I believe the very japanese looking samurai is meant to be china, and the crazy person is commenting on Obama being very respectful when meeting the bank manager.

Between this and all the Mexican references in the Sotomayor caricatures upthread, one might suspect that they're doing this on purpose. Say you're drawing a cartoon that's basically a racist pastiche, then you throw in a piñata to represent Portoricans, or a samurai to represent the Chinese, as if to say: Nips, Chinks, same difference, eh?

Moon Unit Zeppo (Oh my, how original), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link

(I might be overthinking this.)

I like how Colbert's response to this kind of criticism is always to show George W Bush kissing and holding hands w Saudi Arabian prince. That needs to be out there more, apparently.

bowing deeply as he shook hands with Emperor Akihito, raised ire among Obama's conservative US foes who accused him of kowtowing to the son of Japan's wartime Emperor Hirohito.

Someone on the Beeb over the weekend was saying that Obama had to bow deeply to the japanese as he is so much taller. A small bow would not really register. (it's a stupid argument to be having in any case)

suzy mentioned this on the GOP thread: apparently u have to get yr head below the head of the person to whom you are bowing

itdn put butt in the display name (gbx), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

also, i still think the cartoonist is confused---do we have some crazy trade imbalance w/Japan such that they are "partners" and not partners? or is he conflating the bow to Akihito w/our economic relationship with China? if so: batshit

But there's so few of them, and the infrastructure must already be in place - I guess I think that the new 'cost effectiveness' arguments are just another way of saying that 'they' shouldn't have due process.

I'm looking this article up right now, because what you said makes no bleeding sense at all, and I still have some faith the NYTimes editors to cut things that are just the absurd ravings of a tin-foil-wearing righ-winger. Please, don't take this notion away from me. Maybe next week.

Ah, nevermind. I see. The prison is empty, in a state where prison is usually a booming business. I can't even be bother to type the emoticon for shedding a tear.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/11/14/official-white-house-considering-buying-ill-prison-house-detainees/

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Sen. Dick Durbin said Sunday that a proposal to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay at a near-empty prison in rural Illinois would amount to a jobs engine for their state, while at least one critic warned that the move could make the local community a terrorist target.

Is it me, or are both of those statements fucked up beyond all humanity?

Of course I want frosting. I'm a Scorpio. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:30 (fourteen years ago) link

"Don't you see? Prison is one of our INDUSTRIES! It's about JOBS!"

"I warn you, as at least one critic, that you are not afraid enough. You can't bring EVIL to our nation like this!"

YOU'RE ALL OUT OF OF YOUR MOTHERFUCKING MINDS.

Of course I want frosting. I'm a Scorpio. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Wait, so you really can't see how this would create jobs?

Prisons don't guard themselves son.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 05:55 (fourteen years ago) link

No, I see how it will create jobs. Jobs in the prison industry. Which is this twisted self-serving THING that survives quite apart from any actual need for it, and certainly apart from any need for it to be the way it is. It's like the Food Industry. I dunno... it's shit like this that makes me rock back and forth on my heels and mutter for hours, and it's shit like this that's nearly a valid argument for not voting.

Of course I want frosting. I'm a Scorpio. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 06:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, think about what a free-market, private prison system means. It means that there's profit in prisons, which there is, and byt the barrel full, which means that from the top down there is pressure to fill those prisons, because empty prisons are bad business. Think on that a while, and if you happen to be white, go kiss the ground you walk on and the nearest cop too. You are blessed like you can't ever understand.

Of course I want frosting. I'm a Scorpio. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 06:39 (fourteen years ago) link
