i got the ce'cile track, the vybz one, too, and was looking for the cutty ranks one when i stumbled on this... it's an absolute howler of a track and rocks my world like nothing i've heard before, so it's the winner for me!

now i was only joking with the dubstep-shockwave thing but... cesar riddim is on "forward recordings" and the 7 looks like a fabric club flyer and the beat is kinda detroit-croydon and weirdly desultory inna bourgeois western way and it's really cleanly produced a-and how come effin ROUGH TRADE had it first!... b-b-ut i checked the runout groove and stuff, it's even got a JA phone number

o well. in other news !NGOZI riddim! watch out it's tuff!

"Lenky's new one "Timetravel" is good but not as physical as masterpiece or (obviously and especially) diwali - although it's very enticing because a) it's claustrophobically dense, and b) it sounds like it was recorded underwater, which allows it to bring back the "dub" in a rather unusual manner."

I think I may have been wrong about this! Vybz Kartel's "Send on Jah" is a great pop song and I love the way there's all these little percussive rolls all over the place. Still not sure if it would light up the dancefloor but I can't say for sure that it wouldn't!

I like how Ele's "Blessed" goes from the psycho screams+blinding beats bits into these really uplifting quasi-conscious bits. But T.O.K.'s "Fire" is even better.

i find dreamweaver v impressive but a bit hard to love. every piece on it is super tailored

I'm listening to Dreamweaver again and I have to say I really do totally love it - like Diwali it's both insane and yet totally uplifting. I hope Wayne Wonder does another drippy ballad on it.

I tend to like the super-tailored nature of Lenky's riddims, if only because it makes buying and actually listening to his riddim albums on a regular basis conceivable. Yeah Elephant Man's is my favourite again - love that descending bass riff in the intro. But all the versions I've heard are great (agreed on Vybz' subject matter but he always *sounds* so wonderful. Looking forward to his album).

The Dreamweaver is rocking my ass right now. "Blessed" from Elephant Man and "Visa" by Vybz Kartel (CIGARETTE SMOKE IS JUST NO GOOD) both work on different levels. The only riddim killing me like this is still Famine (No one hurt it harder than Lexxus on "Good Hole") or maybe Egyptian (Elephant Man will do any riddim, immediately, even though his performances sound the same. I'm cool with that).

Somebody else knows Hindu Storm! I haven't heard any hindu storm cuts since, like, April though. Is anything floating about that I can find?

Also on closer inspection Vybz is saying he doesn't want cigarettes cos he wants more weed, which is reasonable I think.

it's 02, but the sledge riddim (lexxus's "face it" is all i've heard on it, thanks woebot.com) is total mitch music, yknow that 'diamond in the dirt', beautiful-ugly, signal vs. noise stuff - here it's strings shining bravely through oompa trumpet bass, gradually losing the will to continue - collapsing, detuned.

Rollie, that riddim is the "Surprise" riddim by Troytron. Everyone seems to rate it - I see what's nice about it but I've always found that it drags. Between "Buzz" ("Gimme the Light" etc.) and "Surprise", Troytron is setting himself up as the defender of electro minimalism in dancehall - his productions are all about minute shifts and variations on a repetitive riff/beat - but I find the shifts/variations in "Buzz" to be much more compelling, and it seems to inspire better DJ performances too.

I think Elephant Man is coming out in December. It was supposed to be out in September but was delayed for some reason. Which is a really bad idea in dancehall b/c it moves so quickly! He should definitely take the opportunity to put "Blessed" on there/.

Hey has anyone heard Elephant Man's (INSANE) new Christmas single? I think it's called "Christmas A Bad Man Holiday" or something (that's how the chorus starts), and it's kinda like "Pon Di River Pon Di Bank", only to the tune of "Ding Dong Merrily On High" and with a great stomping riddim underneath.

The only thing I've heard on that riddim is "bandwagonist" itself, and that like Spragga Benz'z "Move" is one of those fleeting tracks I loved on first sight and haven't heard since.

Some blogs noted that Sizzla's inclined to lose it and forget to come up with a tune - but I find even those tracks oddly fascinating, kinda like when you hear an 8-bar groove that totally doesn't work but you can't stop listening to it anyway.
