"This is my cute baby record, filled with girlish sparkle and drool. I had just started fooling around with a 4-track at home and had discovered that I loved singing and playing with myself. And also making music. (I kid, I kid). Anyway some of my favorite musical moments are on this record. Hateful Hippy Girls is definitely in my top ten, and there are moments on Mom that still choke me up. Halloween is also, if I may be so bold, kick-ass. Some kids in some city once told me that they heard Farmhouse on the college station late at night and it FREAKED THEM OUT. Then they met me and it turned out I was disappointingly normal."
I am pretty sure the Shimmy Disc albums are all oop so...

Why isn't Joyride mentioned on this thread? I'm really enjoying it.

I met Lida through friends way back when at a DC hardcore show in the early 80s. A friendly person and I liked some of her subsequent records and then lost track of her. Wow, never realized she had her own thread when I posted the following on the Capital Swamp thread:
Is musician Lida Husik living in DC again, but no longer recording? Thought I read that somewhere.

x-post to myself--Lida Husik's website says she's recording her first album in years, in Portland shortly (but not sure where she is living--she had gotten married and was out in California for awhile). If you don't know her, old Liz Phair and Beth Orton and Lois might be reference points

Ned, do you know Linda Smith's early recordings?
I listened to her way back when. She lived in Baltimore and used to put out cassette only releases. Ah, I see she's still there (and should not be confused with singer Linda M. Smith)--

Perhaps Ned will check back in here soon.

Is Joyride on vinyl anywhere?
― Evan, Monday, 16 August 2010 21:40 (2 years ago) Permalink
Besides E-bay or a used record store? It does not appear to be.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 16 August 2010 22:25 (2 years ago) Permalink
Well yeah, in existence beyond ebay and my local record stores. Didn't know if it came out on vinyl. I worded my question wrong.

Hello. Linda Smith, not heard of her before...
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 August 2010 22:58 (2 years ago) Permalink
Ned, she was a home taper right before it got cool. Had some reviews in Option back when they reviewed cassettes. Her first 3-4 tapes are pretty wonderful. Slightly arty popsongs, and the lo fi for once doesn't really feel like it limits things. Reference points are Raincoats, 60's girl pop, Nico... She got some WFMU attention when she jumped to 8-Track and had a CD, but something got lost with the higher fi. She used to sell a CDR of her first two albums, which is well worth picking up. Maybe CDBaby or something like that...
Linda Smith trivia: she sang on one of the best Crash songs, with Kurt Ralske before he went solo.

Sounds good to me! Will check it out!

Looks like only two albums on CDBaby, both from the past decade:

Sorry to be nosy but I found something for you:
Some early Linda Smith stuff, apparently.
― Evan, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:46 (2 years ago) Permalink
Nice, thanks! Already found a copy of her Preferences comp on Harriet used as a starting point.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 03:14 (2 years ago) Permalink
...and I'm listening to said Harriet comp and damn good stuff it is so thanks to dlp/curmudgeon/Evan for the prompt. Sad that she's not more famous.

this mid-90s IDM track she sings on is pretty lovely:

Okay so Linda Smith's cover of "In Love" is one of the most majestic, beautiful things I've ever heard. That is all.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 20:01 (2 years ago) Permalink
I think Linda's just quietly living in Baltimore and is not that musically active. Lida's been quiet lately too, but she's recording a new cd.
― curmudgeon, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 01:16 (2 years ago) Permalink
She got a big shoutout on Sound Opinions this week. I'd never heard of her, but they played a song that was to my ears a dead ringer for Liz Phair. She even had that same kind of tuneless voice.

i randomly thought about Lida Husik recently and looked to see if she'd put anything out lately -- apparently the only thing she's released since 1999 was a 2006 digital single, guess she's out of the game.

and a 2008 guest appearance on a record by something called 'Uberzone'

SoCal electronic performer. That's a flashback to see his name again!

x-postHer website says she was gonna record an album in 2010 but I guess that never happened.

Had Joyride and My Bag long ago. Used to spin Joyride a lot. Never heard her later stuff. Great voice.

still a fan, in fact I jammed out on "Marcel" a few days ago.

People are still posting on her facebook fan page, but there's no mention of new gigs or an album anymore
