yeah, was that live album 'out' for about 5 seconds or is it just my imagination?

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:01 (10 years ago) Permalink

Not very many of them were pressed. I remember seeing it at Other Music a couple of times, but then it disappeared.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:16 (10 years ago) Permalink

yeah... it was a tremendously small pressing... they didn't even make it out of their west coast leg of their tour with any copies.

anybody pick up any of their t-shirts on their last tour? i bought one. bright turquoise with flourescent designs akin to danse manatee the art! it's too small sadly. the wife wears it.

the covers were just other record covers turned inside out - and not dollar records, either - mine is Simon Joyner's Joesephine EP. The orange paint flakes like crazy though, every time I put that record on (which is often) i have to break out the dust-buster. Well worth the trouble, though

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

I had heard the live record was put out by a Secretly Canadian side label, and that all the covers are just reappropriated SC record covers.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:07 (10 years ago) Permalink

that's the whole focus of the st. ives label - to recycle extra LP sleeves. i think my animal collective LP is on the inside of an old chokehold LP!
i believe they also put out a record for the microphones and sold through those even quicker, i bet.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:17 (10 years ago) Permalink

so i'm listening to the avery tare and panda bear lp (the first one i think) and.. well it's underwhelming. if animal collective sound like this i'm not too excited anymore. the singer has that annoying, nasal whine a bit like every other us schmindie vocalist out but especially like the guy from flaming lips. the first song has these amazing trippy, kind of saccharine but slightly sinister washes of noise, but then by 'bat you'll fly' it sounds like.. um, pavement. and mercury rev. and tortoise. and lots of other bands i don't really like. is it supposed to sound like this? can anyone convince me otherwise? and how are animal collective different? i was really looking forward to there show over here with black dice in may

i don't know if you will come back to this, but if you are looking for a more experimental sound, I would definitely advise you to pick up some newer AC recordings. Danse Manatee and the live album are out of print, Campfire Songs is beutiful and acoustic, so you might want to wait until Here Comes the Indian comes out in June, it is really crazy and unique and good

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:46 (9 years ago) Permalink

I was totally jazzed to see Avery Tare and Panda Bear about a month ago, and I was so, so bored and disappointed. I haven't heard the records, and I don't know if the full group is any good, but wow. Sounded like Beaches and Canyons except somehow even more aimless and formless. Total snoozer dud.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:53 (9 years ago) Permalink

I saw them earlier this month, and though they didn't really sound too much like the record, I wasn't disappointed. I guess in a pinch I could probably do without so much "autistic drumming" (my friend's description). But I thought they seemed remarkably "together", as in I don't think it was all aimless, it sounded like they were actually playing "songs".

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:57 (9 years ago) Permalink

I think the Beaches and Canyons comparison is pretty apt, actually. They don't necessarily sound similar, but this is what I was getting at w/my (half-tongue-in-cheek) New Age comment.

I mean it as something positive -- these are records I listen to in a less-than-conscious way. Maybe akin to what Eno was talking about way back when regarding his "ambient" music, but with a more organic (shitty word, sorry) feel.

they had promo copies of it sent in the states. the new art is *unfortunate* but at least it'll hit outside of new york city. i hear they are recording new 'songy' stuff as a duo. it should be kin to what they were doing on tour, which i heard was telepathic.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:33 (9 years ago) Permalink

I'm a fan. I bought Danse Manatee when it came out, because it was cheap and it looked interesting, and then I emailed the address to find out more about them. This was what, two years ago? I was still in school. One of the guys from the band emailed me back, and told me about Spirit, which I bought as soon as it was back in stock at Other Music. I really love the Spirit album, I think it's one of the most beautiful art records that I've ever heard. I like the Campfire Music and Here Comes The Indian, but nothing on either of them blows me away as much as "Penny Dreadfuls" or "Essplode."

God bless them. I hope that Avey Tare eventually comes around to making more "pop" records at some point, though. I think that melody, lyrics, and structure suits their style very well. I can appreciate the crazier, more free-form music, but it doesn't move me nearly as much.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:58 (9 years ago) Permalink

I was excited to hear that Panda Bear "opened" for the Kompakt gig in NYC recently by singing over a DJ's tracks, just like that cute Colette DJ from Chicago (or is it L.A. now?). Really like their albums, but I'd love to get ahold of a live set of theirs. Like Mr. Quintron and various garage bands I've seen recently, they really seem to shine the most when they play live, and no studio recording is going to capture what they're capable of. They're grrrrr-eat!

The Jane CDRs are really good. They made very very few of them and sold them at Other Music.
The new AT and PB record will be quite a bit poppier than anything recently and should be amazing. I don't think it is coming out for a quite a while, unfortunately, even though they already recorded it.

also a few thousand people spread across a desert is pretty different from thousands of people packed into a festival field, in the good ol' early days of Burning Man at no point would you ever be in a crowd of morons.

On first listen it's ok I guess. Doesn't feel like it has anything at all to do with 2012, which is not necessarily a bad thing but in the absence of new tricks I'd like some better tunes.

ya these songs haven't struck me very much yet, which as a fanboy is pretty rare for new Animal Collective material. I think maybe I'm not especially digging the sonic palette they're using, it all sounds a bit murky and indistinct without having other qualities to make up for that. But then I've seen them doing their latest set of songs a couple of times and listened to them a couple more and I don't really remember these songs, so whatever I still anticipate the album. V uninternetty response I admit, it's time to proclaim a shark jump.
