i would say they're sort of clean - the washer's aggitation does a lot of the cleaning (depending on how good the washer is), but the soap takes out the oils/sweat/ETC and by that i mean i probably wouldn't be too keen on wearing the underwear. maybe.

my mom has one of those front-loading washing machines that aggitates and spins the hell out of clothes - i definitely noticed that my clothes seemed cleaner when i used that at christmas. and you're supposed to use half the soap you'd normally use. interesting. maybe it was partly psychological though.

there should be a thread on that board about how to clean a bathroom - e.g., Is Once Every Three Months Often Enough to Clean My Bathroom Which I Share with 3 Other People?? - because holy hell i have been in some shocking bathrooms. hint #1 - black/brown stains around fixtures, in toilet bowl. hint #2 - the smell of piss. hint #3 - no girls, anywhere.

that said, i think these threads can only help the situation.

(i'm pretty sure that in my late teens/early 20s my bathrooms and kitchens were gross. at least by mom standards. because that's what she tells me. i was always pretty good at laundry though.)

Ewww! I do not even want to think about that bathroom rrobyn.

But, I would call that laundry "clean enough", if it were just my stuff getting washed and the water was at least warm.

We got one of those super-efficient front-loading washers about 2 years ago - sounds like a jet taking off when it spins up, but does seem to get things cleaner.

I read an article once that there's enough detergent residue inside most washers to do at least a decent cleaning job on a couple loads of clothes without adding detergent. There's also the environmental crazies that claim you can use baking soda or somesuch, but we all know there's no substitute for Tide.

I have to use cold water to wash my clothes in the machine (the hot water hose has a leak somewhere, needs a washer I never got round to replacing). I've never found it to be a problem - I use cold water detergents like Cold Power and it seems fine. If I actually need germ-killing (eg the lad's hideously icky sox, or a bunch of grotty tea towels) then I'll soak them in hot water in a bucket and then do a normal wash.

Thinking of buying one of those new LG washer/dryer things tho. What could be better than a machine that washes and then dries your stuff for you all in one hit?

those washers' spin cycles make the house shake!

i'm good at bathroom and kitchen cleaning now - i even have a spray bottle with vinegar-water solution in it for btwn proper cleanings. we all become our mothers.

yeah, cold water works fine for most things, i think too. i use hippie bio detergent and it's just fine. i don't even want to think about communal washers and their "residue."

Ours used to walk out of the closet in our old place, but now it's in the basement and just throws anything left on top across the room.
