track 11 on the marcus rinse CD is the one... really good mix actually. was wondering how i would like it without rankin but it works.

I've already forgiven Enrique Benitez on account of the amazing instrumental track of his that Mak10 plays on the Mak10/Marcus Oct 28 Rinse show. Urgent questions this show provokes:

1) Who is SCREAMA??

2) Who is CHAMPION??

Tim F, Thursday, 5 November 2009 09:52 (fourteen years ago) link

i've been reigniting my love for funky last week or two, old sets but getting back that feeling! does anyone have any big new sets / shows?

Tim, i reckon Screama is probably the same Screama who has made a lot of amazing bassline...

on that tip i've been re-running Illmana ft Chloe – Burning many times these last few days, amazing track! that preceeded by Diamond ft Sophia Romian – Fly Away Remix and then a couple later some outrageous remix of Mr Seduction on the Footloose show from April has been doing it for me over and over again. whats footloose saying nowadays? is he still off 1xtra? i can't believe that they cut him

Benjamin, Thursday, 5 November 2009 10:18 (fourteen years ago) link

that's weird - meant to come back after benjamin's post and this thread is totally not on new answers??????? is this a thing?

anyway yeah tbf i think footloose mightve had other commitments given how often he had dj ng filling in for him the last few months, but even still i agree its a catastrophic loss - on a specific level his sets are like, idealogically crucial (well, to me at least), on a general one he's left a massive gap that 1xtra must be insane to think cameo and dj q currently fill.

or else they feel the general purpose crossover djs (mistajam, ras kwame, target) will account for funky, which is sort of grimly prescient of them tbh but divorces funky from proper house as it were entirely. i mean, are they just not gonna represent for that sort of stuff at all any more? i realise it's the most crowded sphere ever to have a presence in but to jack it all in to focus on just giving the uk bassline scene an outlet seems like some tallest midget shit to me.

anyway footloose is supposed to be appearing once a month in this graveyard segment, next one's on the 9th: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00nsmwk

r|t|c, Thursday, 5 November 2009 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

where does bassline stand now generally? does anyone here check for it much?

r|t|c, Thursday, 5 November 2009 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

ah i see, didn't know he'd been struggling to make his shows. catastrophic loss is right though, as is crucial. i don't know anyone doing what he was doing. been listening to rinse a fair bit recently and all the house on there seems to be properly techy, loads of what i would think of as 'minimal' really. most of the rave poster i catch around are going with house / tribal / tech etc which is interesting

caught Funk Butcher the other day and he was heavy though, loads of tracky but deep house then an hour of very enjoyable funky. not all mixed up like Footloose does though, which for me was quite key to what was so good about his show

no idea what bassline is doing nowadays, i was never that deep into it, just the odd tune caught my ear. Screama and TRC were definitely some of the names i watched for though

http://www.myspace.com/screama1418

some heavy funky tunes on there, a freaky roller and a very buff vocal number

Apparently Donae'o played at Fabric with a full live band the other day? Did anyone go? I can imagine African Warrior would have been amazing in that setting.

unreasonable wishlist: all of Footloose's sets archived
(I'd add Marcus & Mak10, but I suspect lots of these, even besides what I have, are out there already)

does anyone know what track is being mixed in at the end here:http://smokelessfuels.blogspot.com/2009/07/most-wanted-mega-different-lekstrix.html

why is the rinse ad for marcus' mix cd taped via phone? he comes to the studio every single week. couldnt they have just taped him there? also, the ad loses points as there is no mention of shitttaaaaas.

40 mins into this recent mak10/marcus set and not one truly memorable vocal, though this can you kiss me there one isnt too bad.

Is that the one from the beginning of the month? yeah the vocal tunes on it aren't great, "Can You Kiss Me There" excepted!

i skimmed through that hackman mix on blackdowns blog but thought it seemed really 'small' and a bit... i dunno, sterile? all very tasteful of course, but a tad boring. might give it a proper listen later though.

We should reschedule something like this.

Also I really think this thing you said on the grime thread is OTM:

it's funny ingram mentions soul ii soul in remarking on how td and others were unable to to establish fertile collectives - something i've kept muttering on about in the uk funky thread is how it's not entirely so much just a new strain of capital-h house but a prism for the uk to recapture a sense of its own identity - like soul ii soul era brit pirate radio streetsoul culture, or even if you like the early bristol melting pot sound with smith & mighty, wild bunch, and what have you. particularly at the grassroots level that stuff wasnt necessarily less "new configuration, new riff and new structure" type hype rather than indigenous perspective on and juxtaposition of loads of familiar things, often american.

The Ministry of Sound one (The Sound of UK Funky) is the next best. There've been very few officially released mixes so far.

Have a big piece on Dubplate Wonder on the boil.

Tim F, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 07:56 (fourteen years ago) link

why is it the only funky you can buy on vinyl is largely the leftfield stuff? v dissapointing.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

agreed on 'our father' - best thing roska's ever done for me, but it came out last year right?

Tim, i can see why you say what you (constantly) say re: fact and funky, like if you only read kiran sande's column (which is coming from a house/techno background) and a couple of rogue articles you could be mis-led, but it's really not there to the extent you think it is.

i said this in another thread, but these are the funky/arguably funky tracks in our top 100 of 09:

99. dj mystery - speechless
89. crazy cousinz t-shirt remix
78. sticky and ms dynamite - bad gyal
61. shystie - pull it (ill blu rmx)
59. altered natives - rass out
58. doneao - party hard
49. cooly g - love dub
31. kode9 - black sun
18. fuzzy logik - in the morning
05. ill blu ft. princess nyah - frontline

so that's two ill blu tracks. no roska, no scratcha (i'd have had god made me funky in personally, but whatever).

for what its worth, last year's funky inclusions:

95. african warrior
85. siegalizer
26. siren
02. do you mind

where's the bias towards roska/scratcha/geeneus etc there? they're clearly outnumbered.

tom lea, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 13:45 (fourteen years ago) link

also amongst all the ill blu hype, we shouldnt forget 'stick up', which they produced and is rubbish:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvkrnPHzv90

tom lea, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

the most criminally overlooked tracks this year for me were prob magic touch productions' "hips" - rudegyal vocal, bit like a response to "party hard" but the backing is smoother, more latinate, more laidback. "ooh! don't take it thurr - if you can't take me thurr!"

who are n10-tainment! have been loving "i pray" all year, which is just gorgeously sparse and pushes all my cassie-fan-club buttons -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dAacQYoquU

- and now looking it up on youtube i find the equally beautiful "takeover" -
