i have never seen repo man.

Correct this immediately. It is one of a handful of films that accurately depicts LA.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link

for someone reason it just doesn't seem interesting to me.

I've also never seen Robocop, the Terminator, Titanic, or Raging Bull. Probably some other stuff as well.

You know I'm a G 'cause I got a gmail (Susan), Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Robocop is totally worth seeing. The others have more "cultural literacy" points attatched to them, but the movies themselves are eh.

SANJAY BLOGDAI SANJAY (John Justen), Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I have not seen Repo Man, either. New life goal?

Sara R-C, Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

id forgotten all of the fantastic scenery related jokes - obv the generic everything, the can of "food", but also the fact that the shrimp plate speech is followed up much later with the ad for $2.99 plate of shrimp in the background in the supermarket. the (unidentified other than the credits) circle jerks as a lounge band and otto saying that he can't believe he used to like these guys in response.

i think this is a movie where the setting and the details and the inside jokes with casting are more important than the actual dialogue and plot. so so great.

LETS DO SOME CRIMES

SANJAY BLOGDAI SANJAY (John Justen), Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

What he all said.

Also I just love how the film is an amazing X-Files parody, filmed a decade before said show began.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay, I added it to my Netflix queue, so sometime before I'm 78, I should get to that...

Sara R-C, Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I will watch it this weekend. I'm sure it's in my better half's dvd collection which incongrously combined with mine when we moved in together.

You know I'm a G 'cause I got a gmail (Susan), Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

This weekend I'm going to finish watching The Nightmare Before Christmas. I finally saw the first half hour earlier this week and loved it. I'm not sure why, but I was really surprised by that. I should listen to my kids more often.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 17 October 2008 01:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i finally got round to watching the nightmare before xmas, last year after someone told me the main character is based on billy corgan (<3 u billy, you jesus freak), but i was kinda disappointed by it.

as a rule, i don't like musicals. i don't know why.

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Friday, 17 October 2008 02:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i just find song sequences, especially more than one, really irritating in movies.

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Friday, 17 October 2008 02:57 (fifteen years ago) link

remember when tv shows were doing musical episodes? there was a whole lot of 'change the channel!CHANGE THE CHANNEL!' going on in my house back then.

DC Purrman (sunny successor), Friday, 17 October 2008 03:00 (fifteen years ago) link

not musicals. i like opera. classical. other stuff. most musicals don't do it for me. i am seeing lots of theater stuff because i have access and why not when it's free? but in general, i would not choose to go see them. (this may be why my first broadway experience was like, march of this year). did i mention i am seeing mary poppins on sunday? this i am kind of excited about because of nostalgia, etc.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 17 October 2008 03:05 (fifteen years ago) link

funny, i guess i just conflated your love of opera etc. into a love of all things theater-y/musical!!

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Friday, 17 October 2008 03:10 (fifteen years ago) link

it's totally understandable, and i do talk about theater/musicals a lot because i'm involved with them/their people a lot. i used to get really pissed at my undergrad school though, because my program was NOT a musical theater program, but over the course of my 4 years, they increased musical theater programming for our productions a TON, which made me angry because those were roles i had no interest in doing (aside from mrs lovett which i did not get :( ). woah runon.

This is where I mention my appearance in The Music Man in 11th grade is on videotape.

But NOT on YouTube.

my role as macheath in three penny opera

Now there is a role to play, we did this at school but I never even got to do tech on it. (I did very good lighting for LA Nozze di Figaro, Zauberflotte and Amadeus, though)

DC Purrman (sunny successor), Friday, 17 October 2008 14:10 (fifteen years ago) link

It is very funny seeing John list all of these high school shows and seeing him bag on them because I had a great time in most of them even if watching them now is a little embarrassing (esp. "Joseph").

Like sicking a little bit of water into my mouth (HI DERE), Friday, 17 October 2008 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

no i had a ton of fun at the time but watching that DVD of joseph was oooooooof

SANJAY BLOGDAI SANJAY (John Justen), Friday, 17 October 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Joseph was fun and 20 years later I laughed in surprise at Kyl3 coming out of that sarcophagus in his Elvis outfit, so I say that's kind of successful - even if it was ridiculous, too. You guys were pretty great in West Side Story. I only wish I could have seen The Sound of Music...
