"Lukin": uptempo gibberish

"Present Tense": downtempo LIVE IN THE NOW. oh man. a nation of children were waiting for something to believe, and Vedder's going hominahominahominahomina. no wonder Fuck The Bitch and Jesus Saves won big.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Mirror Ball had a couple songs that did ok on radio, one with a video (PJ weren't in it, but they taped "Jam" underneath the Pearl logo on the kick drum) and predictably the one that had audible Vedder vocals.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah see i don't remember hearing anything from ten on alt (or aor making begrudging concessions to grunge) radio, it seems like maybe i heard "daughter" or "elderly woman looking for some mayo in aisle three" on ac radio, maaaaybe even top 40.

xpost - that makes sense. harvest moon got ac AND some country radio, even at alt's height those are bigger ponds (and older audiences that don't mind older artists/wonder who the fuck neil young is).

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

OPEN THE FRIDGE, Anthony.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

anything from ten on anything other than alt... is what i meant

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Checked allmusic. "Downtown" was a top ten mainstream rock hit. but so was, wtf, "War Of Man." "Change Your Mind" scraped the mainstream top 20. No modrock chart listings.

Jeremy was a top ten pop hit.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago) link

actually it occurs to me - their ticketmaster battle/lack of touring is probably what knocked them down as much as 'more difficult records', yeah?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

it sure didn't help. they were the biggest example of how self-crippling alt-arena was. Hard to be small and big at the same time.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

"I'm the Ocean" was the Mirrorball tune that justified the $13 (not a bad song either)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

"Mankind": OMG this song has a hook! who let that in?

OTM re: "I'm The Ocean."

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

"I'm Open": OH JESUS.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah miccio that 'jeremy' topten listing is a soundscan blip, they released (rereleased?) their 'ten' singles mid-nineties, pj fans (which were legion at the time) gotta gotta have whatever that b-side is (a dime sez it's "yellow ledbetter"), buy it that week, next week it drops like a stone. i very much doubt 'jeremy' fails to chart pop in 92 (when they were even bigger and the video was HUGE), but is a much bigger hit in 95. they're not billy vera.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

It was probably a combination of factors: the Ticketmaster fracas, "No Code," their overexposure. The tide was changing in '98 too. "Vitalogy" did ok and is probably their most consistent album song for song, but it didn't hit number one, the "Titanic" soundtrack was hot, and Backstreet Boys were huge and recording more memorable music than PJ at this point.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

"Mankind"! Is that the one that uses "enigmatic" in a lyric?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah I wondered about that '95 thing, gotcha. thought it might have been a misprint or something.

lest I sound too dismissive, I totally understand the appeal of this album for people fascinated by the band. The Durst/Vedder thing totally makes sense, this is totally their Results May Vary. I'd say "Last Kiss" was their "Behind Blue Eyes" but I forget if "Last Kiss" came before or after Yield.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

"Around The Bend": wow, my favorite songs on this album are the tender little side alt-country side-closers! i never would have known. I totally would prefer an album of this type stuff to Son Volt.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

haha i'n decidedly NOT fascinated by the band

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

In my post I meant "Yield" instead of "Vitalogy."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm kind of surprised there wasn't an uncredited bonus track of feedback and/or chanting.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I want to hear Yield now. Gotta find that somewhere.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

"Mankind"! Is that the one that uses "enigmatic" in a lyric?

not sure. You really gotta sit there and go hmmmm to grab lyrics off this thing on the first spin. Kinda reminded me of the D-Plan for some reason. Has the high-voiced chorus hook. I dug that.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

And if you listened too carefully you might get turned off. Eddie had entered the Ravi Shankar phase of his spiritual quest.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never heard Nusret Fateh Ali Khan. I just know that Tim Robbins, Joan Osbourne and Eddie were mad about the dude.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah! "Long Road"! When I saw PJ in 2003 Corin Tucker added eerie harmonies.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

if anybody has an mp3 of Corin joining the band for "Hunger Strike," hook me up.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha "geez Eddie say something" = "please please more shout-along sloganeering". Jeremy's still speaking, mang! Shout it out loud!

Radio around my parts played the bejeezus out of PJ right before No Code hit (and smeared). And, of course, all the Ten stuff on the "hard rock" stations (except when Vitalogy came out, and the alt.rock stations were playing album tracks left & right like "Tremor Christ" & "Spin the Black Circle") (though "Circle" was a single, I think). The one track they played the crap out of more than anything = "YELLOW LEDBETTER" BOO HISS. "Gee, why can't Pearl Jam rip off their hard rock influences more blatantly? Hendrix was cool! Eff Neil Young! Here's some Disturbed! Down! With! The sickness! oooohWAH-AH-AH-AH!"

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

"Mankind" is probably the least PJ track on the album, & a rare occasion (aside from "Do The Evolution") where you can actually dance to a PJ song instead of sway & bob your head. Stone's vocals, the hook...there's very little of EV in the song, which might account for it's popiness[poppiness? poppyness?]. Shrug.

The hits defintely stopped coming after Vitalogy. Better Man was as far as it went, and after that the next biggest thing was Do The Evolution which didn't do much from what I remember. Does anyone think this had as much to do with less saleable songs as it did with their whole 'no video' policy? Curious. I always wondered how much that affected their popularity, if at all.

I didn't find VS patchy, I did find the choice of singles weird, because Dissident's probably the best song. Vitalogy is a way bumpier ride to my mind. Damn bugs. damn heyfoxymophandlemomathats me.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Dissident was a single, though! my brother had the CD single, it had a lot of b-sides. got a good amount of airplay, too, at least where I lived.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

and Blount's right, Yellow Ledbetter is the reason the Jeremy single was so big.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

christ - i'd somehow forgotten they'd stopped making videos!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Really? Dissident was a single here? I guess it wasn't in Australia then. Or I just missed it completely. What were the b-sideS? The b-sides for the first 2 albums were defintely way cool...Dirty Frank on Evenflow had to be the best. Also stuff like Wash, and Footsteps, and yeah, Yellow Ledbetter definitely helped Jeremy.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

haha i have a friend who mixes in liberal portions of "plush" when he sings "dissident" at karaoke - IT SOUNDS GREAT

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Better Man was as far as it went, and after that the next biggest thing was Do The Evolution which didn't do much from what I remember

actually "Wishlist" and especially "Given To Fly" did pretty well.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Doh. Would you believe "doing well" = "songs I like"?

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

"Wishlist" is probably my favorite PJ ballad after "Off He Goes." It gets so much hate from hardcore Jam fans too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, to revisit the "hey, they're ripping off Zeppelin! literally!" days when "Given To Fly" first hit (and then, in my region, missed) radio.

I guess hardcore fans cannot get w/ Eddie's Camaro metaphor.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

"All Those Yesterdays" is it re: getting my PJ ballad fix, tho. (Go Stone!)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

'given to fly' was the biggest hit down here, and even then seemed to drop off considerably once yield actually hit and radio figured 'fuck - it ain't happening'. i heard 'wishlist' and 'do the evolution' a couple of times but not nearly as much as 'given to fly' and none of these anywhere remotely near as much as 'sour girl'.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I remember hating 'Given To Fly' when it came out. It pissed me off so much. In fact, I actually fell off the PJ wagon because of Yield ... which stands as a black mark on my name, apparently. My husband still rags on me about my not going to see them play in Melbourne in 1998, and I lived right down the street from the Rod Laver Arena at the time. All because of Yield. So because it took awhile to come around, I tend to forget about it when I'm talking about the PJ 'canon'. I eventually admitted I was a dumbass and professed my love for Given To Fly, wishlist, etc. So that's my story.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

All Those Yesterdays -- OTM. That was a gem of a discovery once I did get right with Yield. Stone always seems to capture the good things about pop music.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha - Blount, I kinda wish the stations up herre pushed "Sour Girl" 1/10th as much as they tried to push "Down". "No, really, rock is back! Listen! They mean it! Grrrr! Weiland is HARD!" No wonder most of the rawk stations in CT gave up the alt.ghost for the shock of the nu and/or retrenched as bastions of all things 70s and mullety.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Or just switched format to pimp out mostly-syndicated hip-hop shows (like Star & Buckwild / the Wendy Williams X-Foliant).

Note to local superstores: plz discount Superunknown so I can give into my urge to buy it again. This $15-16 buck crap ain't gonna cut it.

They actually did release a video for "Do The Evolution" didn't they? All animation, done by Todd McFarlane. And Korn used McFarlane for one of their videos too!

Funny that everyone talks about ledbetter, it was popular then- but the original jeremy single also featured a song called 'footsteps' that I still think ranks as one of the best PJ songs. The same music was used on a Temple of the Dog song, I forget which one....
(xpost)

mclaugh (mclaugh), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Times Of Trouble is the Temple of the Dog track you're thinking of.

I think the b-sides were mostly live but there was also a Vs. outtake version of "Alone" (the version on Lost Dogs is a Ten outtake).
