Again, it's the impotent nashing of teeth against the dirty fucking hippies I find hilarious. That this guy has it to the point of delusion is even better. Sure, why not take out your angst of the collapsing of your heroes thru your colored pencil scribblings? Go ahead and deny the results of Neilsen ratings for the last coupla years if it makes ya feel better.
http://www.daybydaycartoon.com/080707.jpg
Again, is Muir going on as if this is way things are, or the way it should be? Or, again, is it a bit of self-delusion where the guy is trying to reinforce his delusion thru his scribblings? Hell, there's plenty of great guys over there doing great things, but there's also a lot of guys put thru the wringer and not doing such nice things.

this stems from old news, olbermann put o'reilly on the "worst person in the world" list about 500 separate times for being a liar and a shill, and o'reilly's only response, ever, has been to 1. threaten some radio call-in dork with criminal charges and police action for SAYING "KEITH OLBERMANN" on o'reilly's show; 2. talk about how much better his ratings are than olbermann's.

what i mean is that modern american politics is tribal(blue state/red state bullshit, for example), and there are plenty of people who have had the "media is biased, and therefore untrustworthy and to be discarded" thing drilled into their heads that they can only believe certain media outlets that agree with what the Party is putting out.
the postmodern relativism bit refers to people only believing in things in certain people report them. Stephen Colbert understands this better than almost everybody else nowadays(check his interview with the Onion). It's the attack of "objective media" by people who would happily replace fact with opinion, which, as guys like Chris Hedges write, is a big step towards American Fascism.
But more later, when i've sobered up.

re: Postmodernism in Batshitistan. Where I see this is when radio/tv hosts keep pushing a discredited meme with the knowledge that their audience is unlikely to know or care that it has been discredited. Hannity is particularly bad.
Also, there's a strange focusing on one particular irrelevant detail to represent the whole--Global Warming can't be true because Al Gore has a high electricity bill. The O'Reilly campaign against YearlyKos is an example of this: pulling a few comments from a site with hundreds of thousands of contributers to tarnish the entire net roots.
I think a lot of the consumers of this stuff realize that the tactics used are underhanded, but believe that since their perspective is more morally pristine than the enemy's, it's okay to get their hands dirty. Hence them going insane over Dan Rather and not giving a flying f about Jeff Gannon (or Abu Ghraib--which was just a frat party!)
― mulla atari, Thursday, 9 August 2007 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link
I figured that the batshitters knew that they were using a form of postmodernism - in fact, that they did it on purpose. If you can see a weakness in your "enemy", then you can exploit it, and the conflation of certain sorts of academia/media/leftism can give you a lot of extra leeway.
― emil.y, Thursday, 9 August 2007 22:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Part of the pomo bit i'm talking about is best described by Stephen Colbert, and perfectly encaptured by "truthiness":
...We weren't thrilled with Bush because we thought he was a good guy at that point, we were thrilled with him because we thought that he probably had hired people who would fuck up our enemies, regardless of how they had to do it. That was for us a very good thing, and I can't argue with the validity of that feeling. But that has been extended to the idea that authoritarian is better than authority. Because authoritarian means there's only one authority, and that authority has got to be the President, has got to be the government, and has got to be his allies. What the right-wing in the United States tries to do is undermine the press. They call the press "liberal," they call the press "biased," not necessarily because it is or because they have problems with the facts of the left—or even because of the bias for the left, because it's hard not to be biased in some way, everyone is always going to enter their editorial opinion—but because a press that has validity is a press that has authority. And as soon as there's any authority to what the press says, you question the authority of the government—it's like the existence of another authority. So that's another part of truthiness. Truthiness is "What I say is right, and nothing anyone else says could possibly be true." It's not only that I feel it to be true, but that I feel it to be true. There's not only an emotional quality, but there's a selfish quality.

It's the authoritarian aspect I'm talking about, where one of the side effects is to dispute the authoritative. In other words, if you know your shit, you can call others on their's. And rightwing authoritarian types can't have that. Because your mindset is completely dependent on the big tough daddy who sets the rules and knows best, and NOTHING can question that, because it is in the questioning that the possibility of error or that daddy might not be completely right, and the RWA mindset is (deliberately) stunted enough not to be able to handle that variance, or any shading.
So b/c the RWA thing so needs the unquestioned authority, it will attack anyone or anything that could possibly have a valid standing. You attack those climate scientists who are disagreeing with what daddy and his Party had decried, and then you attack science itself. You try to weaken science by bringing in religion, and teaching not-science along with science. That's one of the problems of the home-school/creationist/ID thing, a deliberate attempt(read "The Wedge Document", this shit really is planned out) to attack any authority that can contest Daddy.
― kingfish, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link
Three people who really understand what's going on, but who really need to meet and talk this shit over, is Stephen Colbert, Bob Altenmeyer(free book is online), and Chris Hedges. I've repped for the last two on several threads.
