I, three, will be there Sunday.

uncannydan, Thursday, 22 October 2009 18:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Excerpt from e-mail press release I received. Those major labels are so hip:

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Records — the No. 1 vinyl label in the country — will bring vinyl directly to the people this weekend by hosting a booth at the annual WFMU Record Fair in New York City. The event, known as a worldwide Mecca for music enthusiasts and vinyl fans, will be held October 23rd through the 25th at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th Street in Manhattan.

"There is no better place to sell music directly to fans than at the annual WMFU show," says Warner Bros. Records General Manager Tom Biery, who oversees all of the company’s vinyl releases. "As a vinyl freak, I have been going to the show for years and have always thought that having a WBR/Reprise booth to sell our records would be a ton of fun as well as a great learning experience.”

This weekend also kicks off Warner Bros. Records’ relationship with vinyl-only indie label, Original Recording Group (ORG), which will be manning the WBR booth.

At the show, Reprise Records will unveil, for the first time, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young's first four catalog reissues, including the direct-to-fan 180-gram Limited Edition box set. Those titles, Neil Young, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush, and Harvest, have been meticulously cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the original master tapes (under the direct supervision of Neil Young's team) and manufactured at the world’s premiere record-pressing plant, Pallas MFG/Germany. This is the first-ever upgrade to these essential recordings on vinyl and is sure to delight both fans and audiophiles alike.

wonder how much they'll be charging for the neil box--if it's affordable (lol) i might have to go for it tbh.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link

four neil young albums? hmm, that should only run you about 40 bucks or so. hahahahahahahaha! wait, i was thinking about a world where prices for things make sense. so, should be about 400 bucks.

scott seward, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm guessing $125.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:58 (fourteen years ago) link

which is obviously way too much.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

robin and i are selling a ton of stuff today, which is why i am awake.
Clothes! Rekkids! CDs! Books! An accordion! A plush Stimpy doll! Boots! The first 'Diana Ross presents The Jackson 5' LP on vinyl, which I suggested we price at a gazillion dollars, but I think we settled on 7.
All moneys raised to go into the "dog account", our joint checking for all things pit bull related so you're helping a good cause!
Come find us won't you? I want to tell you about my day on sesame street.

woulda gone but didn't want to be tempted to spend twice in one weekend...

Hope the trip back wasn't too wet.

Any big markups on Soupy Sales LPs?

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 October 2009 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I went today, got a Roy Harper LP and a weird Japanese Stranglers EP. Crazy fun but, by the early afternoon it had turned into an insane clusterfuck.

Great crowd; many people with personal turntables for vinyl checking, japanese guys toting those suitcases on wheels, filled with records and a surprising amount of cute girls. I thought vinyl hunting was a dorky guy thing only.

kwhitehead, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:19 (fourteen years ago) link

girls who dress up for the wfmu record fair: classic or dud! leaning towards dud tbh, no offense to the vinyl nerd ladies out there. i think any 'girls who dress up' are kinda dud to me.

pondering going tomorrow afternoon--did anyone actually check out the Reprise booth and/or notice the neil young box price?

ian, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i stopped by, didn't see any of the box sets but they had all of the vinyl re-issues (if you care.) cute vinyl hunting girls, mo questions asked classic.

kwhitehead, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

meant to say "no questions asked..."

kwhitehead, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

What constitutes "dressing up" ?

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Many of the dudes there were "dressed up" in their most obscure rock t-shirts.

kwhitehead, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:48 (fourteen years ago) link

The Neil box sets are $150. They're 180 gram, vice 140 for the records if you buy them individually. Plus there's a single that they mail you later. And maybe the LP jackets are nicer (gatefolds, or something). The boxes are a limited edition of 3000. They brought "low numbers" to the show. The lps individually are 20 bucks each. The guy said he's heard the analog master tapes, and these disks are the closest he's ever heard to them.

I didn't get 'em.

Thus Sang Freud, Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

So, essentially $36 per LP

ridiculous, but sort of expected today

I'll prolly eventially get most of them

sucks , but i am junkie and it's Neil..

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:58 (fourteen years ago) link

eh, my originals will do fine.

ian, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, I obv love my originals .. I DON'T see me buying that "box", but I do think I could be enticed to buying a sweet-ass 180 of 'After the Goldrush'

I mean, my original Reprise is tight, but that's one of the best albums ever created by a human being so I might just plunk it down for that one.

Will still be satisfied with my original "Neil Young" (name not on cover) LP ... that thing sounds sweet ... "Old Laughing Lady" ... sounds fucking insanely beautiful, don't need anything but this pressing, thanks....

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

man we gave away so much stuff

I AM NOT ONE TO PURSUE GAME, MY FRIEND - NO, INDEED. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:40 (fourteen years ago) link

So, essentially $36 per LP

Only $20 per lp if you get the individual 140 gram ones. The 180 gram ones are only available as a set, in the box.

Thus Sang Freud, Sunday, 25 October 2009 10:50 (fourteen years ago) link

The first solo lp uses the 2nd mix.

Thus Sang Freud, Sunday, 25 October 2009 10:51 (fourteen years ago) link

man we gave away so much stuff

well NOW I wish I'd gone. :)

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 October 2009 11:54 (fourteen years ago) link

at 5.00pm, we had 1/2 price vinyl and 3 buck cds. Quality shit, too!

Robin always has the best deals. I got the O Level CD for like 6 bucks from her a few years ago.

dan selzer, Sunday, 25 October 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

ust for the record, there's always still tons of good stuff on sundays, and dealers much more willing to make deals as they don't want to carry the stuff home. Also, WFMU DJs get tables for free on sunday, so there's tons of dealers who wouldn't have had tables on friday or saturday. Robin Edgerton sold me the O Level CD for six bucks late on a sunday afternoon, for instance.

She was freaking out about a few choice sales as being ridiculously cheap on her end; I'd have to ask her for specifics.
I was giving away ripped CDs and other unsalable promo stuff with every purchase. We did good business!

did I mention I got the O Level CD for six bucks?

Not the first time I've repeated myself on a thread...and not the last.

dan selzer, Sunday, 25 October 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

did my shift and left w/out buying anything. Mission accomplished!

I did see a great People Like Us vid collage, which merged the openings of The Sound of Music and Apocalypse Now. I'll be associating Julie Andrews w/ napalm for years to come.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Monday, 26 October 2009 00:52 (fourteen years ago) link

less tables this year than usual--the back wall usually had another row of dealers but was empty (today at least)...not very crowded either.

Didn't find anything great but got a decent brown-label copy of humble pie's s/t and beefheart's "unconditionally"

seem to recall from the mailout that they're screening House, too?, i forget. i never saw anything at the record fair. i'd still encourage attending this even if you go at the last minute on the last day - so much marked down shit that's worth picking up.

so Ronnie Spector showed up in the last hour! I'd be aghast at missing that if I hadn't seen her perform twice.

Robin Edgerton (and me) will be going and doing some seriously cleaning out of her CD/Vinyl yet again as she pares her collection. As someone who's gotten to spend a fair deal of time rummaging through it in the past, I'm gonna tell you you're doing a disservice to yourself if you don't stop by her table. She'll be there all day Sunday and I'll be with her so please please stop by and say hi.
