I like both LSB singles a bunch, but it's weird how they both seem to revolve around "Some Girls" by Michael Heart. "Original Highway Delight" blatantly samples it, and "FOG" seems to sample something very similar sounding.

The LSB italo edits were just released too, nothing too essential but I do like the P. Lion one.

hey tim - new peter visti!

haitch, Sunday, 12 August 2007 05:37 (sixteen years ago) link

the newish Detroit Beatdown Vol 2 ep is like balearic detroit-- really smooth synths, lots of congas, good shit. definitely my best recent purchase!

finally listening to that Diepvries mix.

pretty great in the middle from the max essa track to the mudd and pollard one.

gr8080, Monday, 13 August 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

detroit balearic sounds very funny. "this one goes out to all my oppressed brothers who couldn't catch the sunset today."

Michael F Gill, Monday, 13 August 2007 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link

wow.

The Alton Miller "Souls like mine" album from this year is pretty good.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

most of the alton miller stuff is pretty good, imho.

also, that comment about the oppressed bros and sunsets was more than a bit offensive.

by Detroit Balearic, i mean it has the synths and feel of detroit techno/hi-tech jazz, but the BPMs are slower, the samples jazzier, the vibe more 'chill.' really quite nice.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

it was a stupid irreverent joke! this is the internets though, so i deserve what i get. i guess it was just my kneejerk reaction to seeing the balearic adjective applied to yet another style.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't worry about it too much Michael, the idea of the Beatdown guys being Balearic is just plain silly.

grady, what is that Mountain Machine? is that a Mountain of One side project? or are jordorowsky references just flying off the shelf these days?

jaxon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 04:58 (sixteen years ago) link

is that a Mountain of One side project?

that's what i assumed at first, but i'm not sure anymore. when i was on the myspace last week, one of the tracks on the mp3player had accompanying artwork that looked like something i had seen on a bit of AMO1 promo but i think its gone now.

gr8080, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

both the artwork for the song Mountain Machine and A Mountain of One use this imagery, from jodorowsky's Holy Mountain

jaxon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:08 (sixteen years ago) link

from a comment posted on Mountain Machine's page. can we name all of the references? it's seriously my record collection. i've got McDonald & Giles, Max Roach "Members Don't Git Weary", White Noise (lightning bolts), Brian Eno's "Another Green World" (weird characters under wave), Thom Yorke, Selda, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Fela Kuti, Eddie Gale (in robes), John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Lou Rawls, Gentle Giant (king in crown). there's a lot more i recognize but can't place.

i don;t really understand why everyone is doubting me on this one. maybe i'll up some of the tracks just to prove yr mfuckin asses wrong.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I checked out Aeroplane on Myspace (owing to this thread's recommendation and because they're myspace friends with all the Swedish balearic mafia) only to discover that their eponymous song is my favourite track (or equal favourite with "Let It Happen") from Lindstrom & Prins Thomas' Radio 1 Essential Mix. So large sounding.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Table you might be able to make a good case aurally, as the beatdown guys do venture into "chill out" (for lack of a better phrase) areas. But I wouldn't think that the music comes from taking style notes on say, Balearic comps and flamenco guitar players.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

oh god no. more jazzy, for sure.

The entire Badly Drawn Boy "Promises" 12 inch is U&K - Reverso 68, Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve and A Mountain of One each offering a different gorgous definition of "balearic". The AMO1 remix is ridiculously epic, as with "Freefall" it reminds me of Marillion a bit.

Tim F, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

but... badly drawn boy!

haitch, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I know. It felt weird buying it believe me.

Tim F, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i've never actually heard his music, but I have to respect the guy for the company he keeps. He helps run those reissue labels with andy votel like Delay 68 and Finder's Keepers.

jaxon, Thursday, 16 August 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

there's a CD-promo rip of that single that has instrumental versions of the Reverso & AMO1 mixes. surprisingly, the BTWS mix is my *least* favorite, and i'll actually go so far as saying i don't like it, even though those EPs and a few other remixes (findlay brown) are spectacular. what happened?

BATTAGS, Thursday, 16 August 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

i've noticed that most of the Wizard's Sleve remixes just add backwards guitar to the song to make it "trippy" and call it a day.

jaxon, Thursday, 16 August 2007 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

you say that like it's a bad thing.

Tim F, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:08 (sixteen years ago) link

ha. they sound great, it just hit me one day what they were doing

jaxon, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

ha, don't the stone roses have entire b-sides which are just versions of "Standing Here" and "Elephant Stone" played backwards?

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah and they're brilliant. I'M WITHOUT SHOES is worth a download. oh yeah they add some forward vocals too

gr8080, Friday, 17 August 2007 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

so i fucked around with traktor for the first time this weekend and used a lot of the stuff from this thread to start out.

i thought i'd share what i ended up with:

Barlearic Revival

a mountain of one - our eyes
studio - self service (2006 LP version)
sorcerer - egyptian sunset
strategy - running on empty
business man - dubby games (chris isaak - wicked game trentmoller edit)
hatchback - carefree highway
peter visti - dolly (dolly parton - jolene edit)
badly drawn boy - promises (reverso 68 dub)
reggie dokes - the skin i'm in
cantoma - the call

by no means a definitive or even rough guide, but i like how it came out (despite a few near-trainwrecks).
