I thought she was quite good in movies like Nurse Betty, Chicago, or Down with Love

Down with Love was teh awesome

"You had me at 'Hello.'"

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

She has several hundred lines in the film before that one

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link

And I don't remember a single one!

Don't even get me started on my Cuba Fucking Gooding Jr backlash. I wish dude had never made a movie after "Boyz In Da Hood".

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link

But then Snow Dogs would never exist!

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

or Instinct.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Or Pearl Harbor, or that stupid fucking diver movie, or the gay boat cruise movie...

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Or Boat Trip.

One day I came home from work and my husband had left on comedy central for our dog to watch (he feels guilty about leaving him home alone), and Boat Trip was on. ANIMAL ABUSE.

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

or those great ads with michael jordan!

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

the gay boat cruise movie...

Ohhhh I missed this one. Did it star Harvey Fierstein?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Boyz in the Hood is pretty bad

2008 sounds promising for Cuba. The plot outline for Harold from imdb - "A teenager with an early onset of male-pattern baldness befriends his high school's janitor."

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

A teenager with an early onset of male-pattern baldness = Jon Williams?

Check the other thread, Shakey!

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to assume that the people voting Streep here have only seen her in throw-away bit parts.

o. nate, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

like the ones in her Oscar-nominated movies?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I think she was the best part of The Hours - over pretty strong competition from Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman.

o. nate, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow – I wanted to stick them all in bag with a scorpion and chimp.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, I think her best work was probably made back in the early '80s, so maybe she's just the wrong age for this board.

o. nate, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I would have to be paid a substantial fee before I'd ever consider watching that film (xp)

Tom D., Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not a great movie - but Streep was good in it.

o. nate, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm with Kael -- too often she creates an excellent impersonation of a human being

Right. This is a common problem among British actors, less so among American actors.

Tom D., Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Emma Thompson's emerged from this completely unscathed, you'd think someone would be gunning for her (not me, I don't have much of an opinion either way).

chap, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, I think her best work was probably made back in the early '80s, so maybe she's just the wrong age for this board.

Otm. She's been good in several films, mostly from the 80's, but I get the impression that now she's just cashing in, which is fine by me.

Michael White, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Pauline Kael is dead, and so is that initial phase of Streep's career. Not that I'm defending her doing Mamma Mia.

Streep is a riot in Manchurian Demmedate if you just forget about the first version.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link

^^^^^^^^^^ truth

I think she was the best part of okay in The Hours - over pretty strong competition from Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman. Toni Collette was the only good thing about that movie and she was only on screen for about 15 minutes.

fixed

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I would have said Julia Roberts before I opened the thread, but who knew that Renee Zellweger had ever been nominated? dogshit.

Lots other overrated (or just bad) actresses there .. in fact, most of them.

dave 2¼, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

compared to whom? It's not like the Academy is going to be naming Emanuelle Beart, Sylvie Testud and Gong Li every year.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

i think the list is pretty damn solid, especially for its quota of skinny blonde chicks

remy bean, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

i love you sissy spacek

remy bean, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

my favorites on that list are helen mirren and joan allen

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, I think her best work was probably made back in the early '80s, so maybe she's just the wrong age for this board.

Hey, this is a board that listed 1980 as the cut-off date.

We totally disagree – she's improved, warmed, whatever. She's insufferable in The French Lieutenant's Woman, Sophie's Choice and In the Still of the Night.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

One of my friends went to college with Jodi Foster. Said she was very nice.

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 18:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Diane Keaton still sucks.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

people are sick of Laura Linney? ;_; I luff her.

i guess i vote Bening?

horseshoe, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Laura Linney is massively overrated but I don't hate her. Actually I don't hate most of the actresses on this list but I hate some of the movies they were in with a fiery passion.

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

(For example, I love Nicole Kidman to death but MY GOD "THE HOURS" WAS A GIGANTIC PILE OF HORSESHIT)

Actually the only one I really hate is Julianne Moore.

HI DERE, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

even if Linney never made a good movie ever again, I would have to love her because of You Can Count on Me.

xpost

horseshoe, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

The Hours is so so bad.

Nicole, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

nah, Linney's just entering Philip Seymour Hoffman overrated land, but she's fine.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 January 2008 22:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Interesting. You know I was going to mention when this thread was still active that I was surprised no one had mentioned Michelle Pfeiffer, but there you go.
