how can a cartoon tour?
youtubes?

tbh i never got into that show. kinda left me... cold?

ian, Sunday, 4 October 2009 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

live band on stage in the dark, big cartoons on big screen

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 4 October 2009 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

I think it's one of the funniest tv shows I've ever seen, and the second season REALLY raises the bar for pace and complexity. The art is stunning, the situations are ridiculously OTT, and there is an larger story arc/world conspiracy tale unfolding in the background.

I dunno--this shit is aimed right at me, so I can't deny it.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 06:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't remember which season I watched, but it didn't make me laugh. And I don't mean I sat there with my arms folded glowering and muttering "How dare they make fun of metal!" - I just mean I watched it and I didn't think it was funny. It bored me.

agreeing with this. the episodes i've watched have had about a laugh each.

GOVERNMENT TRASH QUEEN ON A THRONE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 4 October 2009 07:28 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, I couldn't get into the show either. too much gross out stuff. I dunno, I might try s2.

original bgm, Sunday, 4 October 2009 14:42 (fourteen years ago) link

If you're not into gratuitous violence, you will not like Metalocalypse.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

not so much the violence as the dick jokes, but yeah.

original bgm, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I'll give it another shot sometime. I just watched random episodes on youtube a few years ago.

original bgm, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I did 3-4 episodes on Youtube last year and thought it was cute. I recently did both seasons of DVDs in anticipation of a Brendon Small interview and was blown the fuck away. (didn't hurt that I have a projector and could see a lot of subtle background details not visible on a tv screen).

It helps to be able to pause on the hell scenes and look at all the detail--particularly in Season 2, when the pace is aggressively cranked up.

I think Go Into the Water fans should check out the double-whammy of "Laser Cannon Deth Sentence" and "Black Fire Upon Us" on Dethalbum II.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Metalocalypse is a lot better with DVD captions, I find. The show's funnier when you can actually tell what they're singing about.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm not polling it, but I want to know what you all think (especially j0hn) of the Rate Your Music all-time metal list?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, Symbolic and Crimson are oddly high-ranked, for starters.

A. Begrand, Monday, 5 October 2009 00:03 (fourteen years ago) link

"I'm not polling it, but I want to know what you all think"

i think it's a list. of metal albums. lots of metal albums. some of them are better than others. some are worse than others. many of them have colorful covers. some of them came out in the same year. some in different years. there is at least one rage against the machine album on this list. this list is web-based.

scott seward, Monday, 5 October 2009 00:16 (fourteen years ago) link

The ranking is pretty arbitrary, but nothing really jumped out at me as not belonging somewhere on that list. Haven't heard the Edge of Sanity record, though.

Defender Of The Girly Metal Faith (J3ff T.), Monday, 5 October 2009 00:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Tool should not belong in anything else than the Steaming Pile Of Shit list.

Siegbran, Monday, 5 October 2009 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i think my issue with metalocalypse is that like, you don't really need to satirize metal because it's pretty much intrinsically funny? maybe i was missing the point.

You mean like any W.A.S.P. album post-The Last Command?

"i think my issue with metalocalypse is that like, you don't really need to satirize metal because it's pretty much intrinsically funny?"

this was actually my problem with spinal tap when i finally saw it. but i think i was the only person who felt that way. everyone else on earth loves it.

scott seward, Monday, 5 October 2009 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

that's funny--i sort of agree but think the individual performances and the way the scenes in spinal tap are constructed are just funny on their own. whereas, metalocalypse is like a cartoon with bad animation.

yellow card for favre (call all destroyer), Monday, 5 October 2009 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

you can't satirize something funny?!

e\m/ily (roxymuzak), Monday, 5 October 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

my award winning satire on looney tunes coming any day now.

ian, Monday, 5 October 2009 01:32 (fourteen years ago) link

"i think my issue with metalocalypse is that like, you don't really need to satirize metal because it's pretty much intrinsically funny? maybe i was missing the point."

Definitely think you're missing the point. These guys are metal fans who are satirizing celebrity culture.

Nate Carson, Monday, 5 October 2009 01:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Shame on me for not listening to the new Revocation sooner. What an incredible album. Traditional yet proggy in places, and can that dude ever shred. Why aren't those meatheads at Liquid Metal not playing the hell out of this? This is groovy American metal at its finest.

A. Begrand, Monday, 5 October 2009 03:37 (fourteen years ago) link

so the new converge album is pretty great. anyone else heard it? it's a really solid set of songs. i'm not really sure how i feel about the barrage of guests, because i don't think they really make the disc unfocused like some others have been saying, but some of them just strike me as being unnecessary.

borntohula, Monday, 5 October 2009 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

TIS GREAT STUFF. nOT SURE ABOUT THE LAT 2 SONGS MIND YOU.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

ugh my keyboard fucked up there. In english

It's great stuff. Not sure about the last 2 songs mind you.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

i feel the same way, although i'm warming up to "wretched world."

borntohula, Monday, 5 October 2009 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, I justed listened to the new Lita Ford album. The whole thing. Where's my medal?

On the other hand, never having to listen to it again is probably reward enough.

Yeesh.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 00:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if my enjoyment of the new The Red Chord record is more indicative of it actually being a good album (which I think it is) or of my increased tolerance of tech-death-core stuff.

Defender Of The Girly Metal Faith (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link

That's an album I'm looking forward to hearing. Too swamped with other stuff right now, though. Deathcore's really taken a nose-dive since Clients (more oversaturation than anything), so I'm hoping this record wil make the scene kids cower.

Cool Girly Metal piece in dB, Jeff! Like the idea...if they do BM, then why not GM?

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

lol @ "GM"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 October 2009 00:12 (fourteen years ago) link

I shoulda trademarked it

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 October 2009 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I hated Clients, and consequently skipped Prey For Eyes, but I'm liking Teeth Machine so far.

The new Lita Ford disc is...yeah, whatever. But I had fun interviewing her.

ahem

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 October 2009 00:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Decibel hates SubArachnoid Space, apparently :(

Nate Carson, Thursday, 8 October 2009 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

That's a shame...I think they're cool. I love spacey Krautrock metal.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Never heard them before, but "spacey Krautrock metal" just ensured that I will be looking them up tonight!

SubArachnoid Space rule. Fuck which ever journo slagged it off

Stillborn birth of a display name (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Listening to samples on iTunes right now, loving the shit out of these 30-second clips. That descriptor is actually pretty good because I do hear a bit of Circle (probably my favorite band right now) in these. Any recommendations on the album to start with?

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 October 2009 02:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I like their earlier, trippier, less rockin' stuff. Try These Things Take Time and/or Almost Invisible, both on Relapse. Avoid Endless Renovation, and here's a link to my review of the new one.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Friday, 9 October 2009 02:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i love endless renovation! and the new one.

scott seward, Friday, 9 October 2009 03:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I think starting with the newest one is a good idea. I think handing it to a journalist who hates it to review for a major magazine is a bad idea.

Nate Carson, Friday, 9 October 2009 04:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm looking forward to hearing the new SAS, never thought they were that great on record before. always good live, though.

LIVIN' IN A JAM SPREAD (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 9 October 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

This one was captured mostly live in the studio by Steven Lobdell from Faust. It's analog and good.

Nate Carson, Friday, 9 October 2009 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

uh, steven wray lobdell from davis redford triad, ya mean. yeah, i mean, he was in faust, but it's kinda lame that that's all people know him from.

LIVIN' IN A JAM SPREAD (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 9 October 2009 07:11 (fourteen years ago) link

and sufi mind game, baseball astrologer, and his solo works too.

LIVIN' IN A JAM SPREAD (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 9 October 2009 07:11 (fourteen years ago) link

...and Lords of Falconry, his current project.

I have a DRT lp. And I'm personally acquainted with the guy. But since people were touting the "kraut metal" above, I thought the Faust reference would be more tantalizing.
