get physical is april 16th, i believe. has it actually been confirmed yet?

indie dancing can be planned here, too!

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:59 (8 years ago) Permalink

april 16, cool.

any sort of dancing! I mean I would love to find a decent R&B night in London, and people to go with.

also for gay dancing I'll be at GAY this Saturday for the Girls Aloud appearance.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:10 (8 years ago) Permalink

i have to go to 333 on friday for one of the ratpure. i think the idjut boys are playing as well.

the key is in weird railyard no-man's-land around the station, the kind of area in which you're supposed to walk in groups.

xpost - yes, i'd love some r&b dancing. whatever patience i had for techno has pretty much vanished.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:13 (8 years ago) Permalink

What do you mean by R&B? Old Skool R&B nights are always full of mods. Somehow I suspect that's not what you mean.

I will be dancing at the Shoegazing Club on the 24th February (at Legion on Old Street) but I suspect everyone else will be dancing at Freaky Trigger.

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:18 (8 years ago) Permalink

I'd be into R&B too.

I mean R&B like uhhh I guess chart R&B. plus maybe a little hip-hop. OR stuff like the Supremes. any R&B really!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:21 (8 years ago) Permalink

any place where they play Ciara, too.

my flatmate's sister keeps promising to take me to proper r&b/garage nights in east london, but so far she hasn't delivered.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:26 (8 years ago) Permalink

apparently there are good R&B/hip-hop/garage nights at the Stratford Rex, which is just down the road from me, but everyone I know is too scared to go :(

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:32 (8 years ago) Permalink

it would be the other patrons who would have to watch out, where stacey's sister is concerned.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:39 (8 years ago) Permalink

wow i was just thinking last night that 'we' should go to a proper R&B night - count me in, i'll even wear a suit and shit.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:54 (8 years ago) Permalink

i'll go to the Rex with you Lex, seeing as it would be about 10 minutes walk home afterwards, wooo

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:55 (8 years ago) Permalink

Michael Mayer and Miss Kittin!! ...and I have an essay due the next morning.

There's also that norwegian night at Fabric with Annie DJ'ing on the 3rd March, isn't there? oh, dancing, I miss you so.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:01 (8 years ago) Permalink

for cheezy chart r&b i've been to that place in the trocadero several times, it's a midweek thing. jim'll remember what it's called and which night. it's quite fun, although i haven't been for ages so i couldn't swear they haven't changed the format.

i'm up for dancing pretty much all the time. although i haven't been 'proper' dancing to music without words for at least a year, so don't know if i'd be into that these days.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:06 (8 years ago) Permalink

the Rex is ON! for anyone who would be up for it. er, I don't know which are the best nights or anything, I'll have a look when I'm not at work.

cheesy place in the trocadero sounds promising too.

i think i might pass on March 3 for the sake of March 4.

Mayer and Kittin might be tempting enough for me to pass up my prior arrangement...

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:09 (8 years ago) Permalink

I have a terrible allergy to the word 'cheese' when it's applied to music. Bloody Oxford *mutter* *grumble*.

i couldn't think of a better way of saying it...they've usually just got chart stuff (i'm sure ciara will be on heavy rotation) as well as stuff i've heard on the radio back in detroit but not so much on pop radio here.

ah! bar rumba, i think that's what it's called. tuesdays or wednesdays, i think.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:26 (8 years ago) Permalink

miss kittin was great when we saw her! it might have been the shaved head though.

i think we should all ruin our fridays for the sake of kittin and mayer. the thought of me lecturing on 4 hours sleep is pretty amusing, anyway. and cis, couldn't you just write that essay now, or something? i never was very good at the whole essay crisis thing.

i want to be in Toby's class

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:20 (8 years ago) Permalink

the last time i saw her, i remember her mainly playing a lot of big-room techno. i didn't particularly want to be there to begin with, though, so that might have colored my view of the whole thing.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:23 (8 years ago) Permalink

I've never seen Miss Kittin, I love her purely on the basis of her records, especially I Com which I am in love with.

if only Cis was writing essays for Toby, then that would resolve itself.

This thread is such A Good Thing.

"I mean R&B like uhhh I guess chart R&B. plus maybe a little hip-hop. OR stuff like the Supremes. any R&B really! any place where they play Ciara, too.
-- The Lex"

People may scoff, but Popstarz is totally where you should go. The bottom floor is sticky, but it plays all the above. And then you can escape to Pop heaven on the top floor, make out with someone on the balcony and then dance to schmindie on the middle floor when you're so drunk you don't care that they're playing Razorlight.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:53 (8 years ago) Permalink

Marianna not even I will ever be that drunk!

I have been warned off Popstarz as a Place Of Indie, though if there are non-indie nights then it will be promising...

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:08 (8 years ago) Permalink

what happens at the Scala on Saturday night these days? i remember it was Cookies & Cream (urban/hip-pop) for a while but no more i presume

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:13 (8 years ago) Permalink

Popstarz is kind of weird - they insist on having the indie room in the main bit despite the fact that it is always half empty because all the punters are upstairs for the proper hi-nrg gay disco which is, naturally, a quarter of the size and absolutely rammed.

And that little room off to the side where I saw all those big blokes grinding together to Beenie Man. That was weird.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:14 (8 years ago) Permalink

oh man I want to grind against big men to Beenie Man!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:15 (8 years ago) Permalink

Also I just saw the words 'the Rex is ON!' and got all excited thinking you were talking about Rex The Dog. Damn you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:18 (8 years ago) Permalink

OK I've just found out that my prior arrangement tonight (the Plan B night) is actually just around the corner from Plastic People! and to be perfectly honest Mayer and Kittin will be much more fun. I may show my face at the Spitz, then hotfoot it over to PP - I worry about the ltd tickets on the door selling out though.

is anyone else definitely going?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 February 2005 10:41 (8 years ago) Permalink

i'd like to see Mayer but don't think i can do this really due to enormous list of things to do that will only increase in size further if i go clubbin' on a schoolnight, sob

Rex The Dog should be playing around town a bit over the next few months. Keep an eye on Plastic People...

More aceness coming up, unfortuantly on the same bloody night:

Sat 26th Feb, Fabric - bPitch Control room: Ellen Allien, Tomas Andersson, Sylvie Marks, Smash TV. Steve Bug, Rub n Tug & Idjut Boys in other rooms.

Sat 26th Feb, Koko (ex Camden Palace) - Output Records Party: Tiga, 2 Many DJ's, Blackstrobe, Headman, Trevor Jackson.

xpost - yes, i'd love some r&b dancing. whatever patience i had for techno has pretty much vanished.

Miss L speaks for me - I need to rock to hip hop and r&b again, and good old pop for that matter, 'cause I'm too burned on this electro house guff now. I'll do Annie, Tiefschwarz, Rex, and Get Physical, but beyond that...Truth is, I may have actually had more fun at Club Seal than Vitalic (Psycho Pab excepted). I still want to go to Trash at least once.

Oh, and I have plans tonight, so no go.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Thursday, 17 February 2005 12:30 (8 years ago) Permalink

i've gone the other way from Lauren and Barima and lately enjoy dancing to/hearing out electro/techno more than I have for some time.

I haven't been to an urban (i'm just gonna keep using that term because i prefer it to anything else) night since Fez Club in Putney ages ago which was actually really good, even when they played Fatman Scoop for the second time...

I was gonna comment on The Popstarz Debate but then I realised that I like and dislike club nights entirely on the basis of whether or not they let me in when I was underage, which is kinda useless to, y'know, adults.

I wish I could see Girls Aloud or Miss Kittin.

Flattered and all, but you are a mentalist. The Output night on the 26th looks pretty fantastic. Is this a proper Black Strobe decksnfx thing?

Also, am I the only person who finds rebranding the Camden Palace as 'Koko' utterly hilarious?

Lol, last night Theo Parrish likewise played Nirvana.

So, the two and only times I've seen Detroit House DJs here they've both dropped Smells Like Teen Spirit in the middle of their sets. Am I missing something here?

formerly EDB (ed.b), Sunday, 2 September 2012 08:07 (8 months ago) Permalink

Laurent Garnier is also a well known abuser of that track. I'm not sure quite how I'd react to it, it was a "gateway track" for me, but hearing it hundreds of times in my misspent indie club years has massively dulled the appeal. I feel the same way about Out of Space, which is often used by DJs in a similar way.

If I was still in London there would be NO question about that Dial night. That lineup could be in the 9th ring of Hell and it would still be amazing.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 12:06 (8 months ago) Permalink

I went to the Komische night. We stayed for Roedelius but could have done with some beanbags to lounge around on during the performance! After he finished we opted to leave for some house music so went across to Nomad. Never been there before, sound system not brilliant and odd crowd. There was a couple heaving petting in the middle of the dancefloor for at least an hour. It emptied out by 3 for Audio Werner who was really very good.

i have tickets for the dial thing (a fiver back in july) but i'm mega-skint paying for a diploma at the moment, so i might pass, even the price of a drink or two is beyond my meagre budget.

it is an unbelievable lineup tho, and i could walk there in about 10 mins.

how was the dial night?

J&J live were good but it was a fairly sparse crowd and the atmosphere was a little flat. tama sumo livened things up afterwards. factory floor & peter gordon the next night were really, really great.

jabba hands, Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:12 (8 months ago) Permalink

dial was good imo, the venue was decent, v v hot. tunes were good in fits and starts, half hour here and there, but overall a good vibe. flugel was v odd, he played what sounded like 05ish minimal stuff. efdemin played some great bits at times, and i think it was lawrence in the main room who was good.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:25 (8 months ago) Permalink

venue was good but waaay too hot and overofficious security running around like FBI men gone wild (running to close a window someone just opened?)

efdemin/roman flugel played different kinds of things, no particular coherent theme but was good in places
pantha du prince was actually not too bad, better than i thought he would be

lawrence was easily the best tho, tapered a bit towards the end but great otherwise

suare, Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:31 (8 months ago) Permalink

Corsica still continuing to oversell their nights

Is that just a programming issue, with a relatively empty Room 2 as often happens at Corsica; plain over-crowding; or are you talking about having to wait with pre-bought tickets because it's overcapacity?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:53 (8 months ago) Permalink

sometimes lopsided line ups with empty second room, and sometimes just plain overcrowding - not had any problems with waiting to actually get in though
