ts: Dr. Phil vs. Dr. Drew vs. Dr. Dean Edell

Leee (Leee), Friday, 13 June 2003 05:19 (twenty years ago) link

in one of my darker moments i called up an old friend (it was new years and he was the only one home) and after talking a while he began to quote dr. phil to me. i beat a hasty retreat and resolved that next time i feel like shit i will cry into my pillow rather than reach for the phone.

I didn't know who he was until he was a guest star on Frasier a couple of weeks back. Now he is appearing everywhere.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

Oh he's been embedded into the consciousness of middle-American housewives for a long time before that, Alisa. I call shenanigans on him. Basically, he just tells you that you don't want to do whatever stupid thing it is you do (as the NZA pointed out).

"You don't WOOONT to go eat an entire chocolate cake."

What a crock.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

But I'm neither middle-American, nor a housewife.

He sounds like the "you don't want to do that" guy off Harry Enfield. I think he might be shown on cable over here as my husband has seen him several times since he appeared on Frasier.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

But I'm neither middle-American, nor a housewife.

Hence he's just entered into YOUR consciousness! :) You can thank Oprah for unleashing him on the world.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

That's as may be. But I hold Frasier solely responsible for unleashing him on my world.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

I can actually appreciate that he probably has helped some people make small decisions and maybe even some big ones.

It just so happens that his particular pop-psych argot pushes all of the wrong buttons for me.

And of course Dr. Phil has enriched himself in the process, unlike the 12-step programs that invite easy derision but are likewise helpful to many.

Two years ago, right before Christmas, I happened to mention to my mom that I was feeling a little down. Lo and behold, one of my presents:

http://seaburn.com/blackbooksplus/life%20strategies_small.jpg

My problem with Dr. Phil is basically the same problem I have with all TV/radio psychologists -- they reduce people's struggles to generic sound-bites, with little interest in context or history. I'm willing to grant that this might work for some people -- i.e., maybe all they need is to hear someone say, "You're being immature!" -- but too often, it seems like a "quick fix."

Apparently, Dr. Phil used to have a private practice, but got bored and impatient with listening to people's problems all day. That kinda says it all for me.

Dan will sometimes scare me/reduce me to hysterical laughter with his spookily accurate impersonation of Dr. Phil's voice.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

i think of him as being in the tradition of traveling preachers who no doubt believed their own words but also had a lot of the showman and a bit of the huckster in them, selling the same bill of goods to new audiences every evening. it's a grand american tradition.

at least he actually has a ph.d. in psychology, unlike Dr. Laura, who has an M.D. and got certification for mairrage counselling, but who mostly just seems to push this weird religious agenda.

Dr. Phil -- the only advice expert from Oprah's show who didn't sound like a bunch of new-agey nonsense. I like most of the advice he gives. Perhaps I'm not snobbish enough to view this program as anything other than a great catharsis, and not angled against the program enough to completely forget that this guy, unlike any other talk show host out there, actually seeks out further help for his guests and says that his program is not that of solving problems in 15 minutes, but rather giving these people the wakeup calls they need to start off on the right foot, and then giving them further help for long after the program's already been aired.

I do recognize that he does make those "You don't want to eat a whole chocolate cake, do you?" comments, yes, but those are purely for comedic/exaggerated effect and are meant to make the guest (and the audience) laugh. No one seriously thinks that's part of his advice. That's just his own way of showing how absurd he feels these people's justifications are. And no, he doesn't do this to everyone; there are some people whom he has on who are so deeply in pain that he will be very gentle with.

Personally, I'm glad he's on the air. We've needed someone like this to counter-balance all the crap Oprah and the Oprah-likes have (you talk about pop psychology overdrive there). At least, that's what I feel.

Oh yes, and my opinion of the guy has significantly changed since the time I typed up and submitted the above post o' mine. I got fed up with the guy sometime in early July and now actively seek to avoid him and his corn-pone, tired "advice". I think it's ridiculous how he seeks to include his wife and two sons in almost everything he does and if I have to see Jay's smug, assholeish countenance one more bloody time, I will be forced to buy a plane ticket to L.A., track Jay down, and smack him until his ears bleed. I have never liked Jay. He's even smarmier than the old man is.
