Well, it's worth a try, and the other bands you could do this for have been done already.

Oddly, most peopple can pick one, and as they are quite different in the main, the favourites should span out more.

I'll stop at three though. I guess if I went down to six, Squeeze might get a look-in eventually. OK, maybe if I went down to nine. Maybe not.

Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:28 (sixteen years ago) link

VU all the way for me because the other albums don't have "Stephanie Says" and "I'm Sticking With You." Then The Velvet Underground. Then The Quine Tapes which were a genuine revelation to me. Those motherfuckers DANCED!!

ACH!

That's what you get for listing from memory.

Should I start a "4th" thread? Would anybody put that one top three?

Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Naaah, I don't think so. (on the other hand, this is ILM, you never know...)

God no.

Fourth fav VU album

Sorry, just thought on: There are three canonical albums, so let's get past them at least.

Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:56 (sixteen years ago) link

5th fav VU

Right, job ends.

At least, when the other ones are off the new answers thread, place looks less untidy.

Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Mark G, you know I love you. But this whole thing leaves me entirely overwhelmed. I think it's great you're making use of the poll feature in new and exciting ways no one has dared to try, but I just can't...I can't freaking rank the VU albums. It just feels all wrong. I don't even want to admit to the ones I like least. And then, you see when you have VU and Another VU as choices...I told you I just can't do this. I can't do it. It'll break my heart.

fuck off Mark G

am0n, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Bimble, it's okay, you don't have to reply to all the polls. I only have a first, second and fifth favourite Velvet Underground album, for instance.

StanM, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:22 (sixteen years ago) link

WLWH full stop.

Okay for real now I'm convinced someone is deleting some of my posts. What gives?

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 06:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Bimble, no offense taken, you do what thou wilt.

It's a test, as I say, of a 'way' of doing something. If the VU is a bad subject for you, fair enough. I pondered about doing PIL albums this way, but there are enough pools of appreciators that'd go for one of three albums at top, and lower down, etc blah...

As someone says, it'd be interesting to see if the LP that comes fifth in the 'best' poll comes top in the 'fifth best' poll.

And there are some who like to statistise.

Mark G, Sunday, 10 June 2007 23:29 (sixteen years ago) link

You know what I mean...it's that thing that only came out in 1985...I had a flexi disc from some normal UK music paper...you know2 what I mean. It had "Stephanie Says" and I was just a Velvet Underground virgin. I swear.

StanM, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Favourite: VU and Nico
Second Favourite: VU and Nico
Third: White Light, White Heat
Fourth: Loaded
Fifth: Loaded

Yay! (errm...)

So, this means that VU and Nico is the favourite, and all those who like another album better, like the VU/Nico as their second favourite.

So, VU and Nico is the overwhelming winner, and gets to run the government.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:29 (sixteen years ago) link

abanana, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 01:17 (sixteen years ago) link

White Light/White Heat is almost ruined by "The Gift", as far as I'm concerned. "Murder Mystery" on the next album is a much more listenable -- and less obtrusive -- experiment.

novaheat, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 05:47 (sixteen years ago) link

"The Velvet underground" is quite consistent.

It ended up being the second favourite, the second second favourite, the second third favourite, and the fourth fourth favourite.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 07:41 (sixteen years ago) link

"The Gift" is awesome - turn your balance to the left speaker, pump up the volume and surrender.

willem, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 07:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha! I've done that!

I voted for the Quine Tapes because of the monster "Sister Ray" versions, which for me just fry the studio one (not to mention the as-yet-not-officially-released Boston Tea Party version).

Hilltop/Ostrich 1969

tylerw, Thursday, 31 December 2009 23:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't forget the Legendary Guitar Amp Tape! (though you should just try to track down the 4 disc Tea Party set since it is one of the included shows).

I really like the EPI/1966 show from Valleydale OH. Good show with Nico.

Otherwise, Tyler got 'em all.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 January 2010 03:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Guitar Amp tape is indeed great fun ... I think that "Melody Laughter" is at least part of the Valleydale show ...
In the Unterberger book, someone talks about having heard newly mastered Boston Tea Party recordings that are better than anything currently circulating ... Would love to hear those. The Tea Party tapes are listenable, but not fabulous. Performances are out of this world, obviously.

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 16:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I keep hearing about both the Tea Party thing and the Legendary Guitar Amp thing... the 4cd set (which I have also heard about) is the best source/way to get them, then?

Without Curves, I would feel deflated. I like Curves. They are best. (Stevie D), Friday, 1 January 2010 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm actually not sure what the Boston Tea Party 4 CD thing consists of -- is it a comp of different shows? I just have 4 or 5 two-disc shows (incl. the Guitar Amp Tape) ...

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

oh and if anyone hasn't seen it uhhhh http://thenunsareontheseawall.blogspot.com/

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I was just gonna post this in answer to the Boston Tea Party question:

http://thenunsareontheseawall.blogspot.com/2009/06/velvet-underground-boston-tea-party_21.html

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link

ah ok ... I think I have all of those shows -- are these improved quality?

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't think so - I had a couple of these previously, but only as partials with other stuff tacked on or replacing things. This was all of 'em in order, with (I think) the correct set order.

I think the version I had previously of the Guitar Amp tape was better, actually.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

cool -- the Unterberger stuff I mentioned sounds neat. The former Tea Party manager Steve Nelson says he has heard "newly mastered live recordings of three VU shows at the club from late 1968 and early 1969 and says that they are notably superior to live recordings of the band from the same era ... 'I've been dying to have that released, but apparently it's tied up with various kinds of things with personnel and record companies ... to me, those are the best Velvet Underground performances recorded anywhere.'"

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

a cool thing about the Tea Party tapes is how enthusiastic the crowd sounds! definitely a crowd full of die-hards (including Jonathan Richman, I guess).

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd love them to do a Tea Party set like they did The Quine Tapes. Hell, I'd love a box set of say five shows - one each from 66-70 - to complement Peel Slowly and See.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, this tea party thing the guy is talking about is probably the unreleased Vol. 2 of the VU Bootleg Series ... which may never emerge, I don't know.

tylerw, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link

A lot of these bootlegs seem to be incomplete shows or a mix of different nights or in the wrong order or whatever. Is there anything that puts the full guitar amp recordings in proper sequence/completion? Or the Boston Tea Party gigs?

Without Curves, I would feel deflated. I like Curves. They are best. (Stevie D), Saturday, 2 January 2010 05:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Remember that in that time, 2 sets a night were played and multiple-day runs weren't unusual either. Combine that with multiple sources and some tapers who cut their tracks after spoken intros and others who cut just after the applause of the previous track, some who cut medleys into separate tracks and others who don't and you end up with this kind of thing. And then you get the 01/02 = January 2nd or February 1st and other illegible/unknown dates on tapes = confusing mess. I'm into Stooges stuff from the early 70s, same story. :-(

StanM, Saturday, 2 January 2010 14:15 (fourteen years ago) link

guess i should have started a new thread for this...thanks for all the responses

iago g., Saturday, 2 January 2010 14:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Worth tracking down the Legendary Guitar Amp tape if I manage to snag the 4-disc Boston Tea Party set? How's the 2006 remaster?

Without Curves, I would feel deflated. I like Curves. They are best. (Stevie D), Sunday, 3 January 2010 06:51 (fourteen years ago) link

The remaster I heard is just louder and has digital clipping. Don't bother.
