cat & girl is nicely drawn but makes less sense than day by day

san antonio rock city is the fucking worst

does your crazy ex like these?

and what, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

cat and girl lost the plot at some point but the ones you've just reposted are actually good

ghost rider, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Ok you don't like it. we get the point!
i think if you peek at the "batshit right wing cartoons" thread you'll see this shit called "day by day" that makes this junk look like it was done by picaso.

ha ha xposts!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

From these examples Cat & Girl seems a lot better. The jokes don't make much sense, but they're not nearly as trite and obvious. Also, yes, quite nice drawings.

Cat and Girl is sometimes okay, the real answer is Questionable Content

I read questionable content everyday. Crossref w/ Justice thread:

oh god that's awful. are those meant to be teeth in her mouth?

electricsound, Friday, 15 June 2007 08:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Nothing ever happens in QC. They just mention a band, make some zing and then hint at sex. It is very boring. I still read it though because I like the anthropc and want one.

kv_nol, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey I like QC. Love it. SA Rock City looks kind of shit from the examples here tho.

HEY HAY PASSANTIIIOOOA or anyone what is yr view on thelondonpapers' Em comic. They had a joke about iliketrains. ILIKETRAINS! THATS LIKE MAKING A JJOKE ABOUT 65DAYSOFSSSTSTSTSTATIC! the punch line was like "lol i don't like trains cos they is late!".

Can I please be the Faithmouse of the "What's the worst online comic strip?" thread?

dorothy, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I think you could be onto something here. Today, our protagonist finds out what happens when one wears a nylon shirt for just over two months; tomorrow they become a 'pigeon detective' in an attempt to find out why they get covered in shit every time they step out the house

xpost

DJ Mencap, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:31 (sixteen years ago) link

it's strange that there isn't, to my knowledge, a brit indie equivilant of these comics. i guess cos amerindie is into books and comics and geekiness while britindie, well, isn't.

i was thinking more of the protagonist searching for 5live on AM for a long time. yr idea is better. keep the ideas coming, we could sell this stuff to drowned in sound!

acrobat, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:39 (sixteen years ago) link

On a Kerrang thread some time back we mourned long-dead K! strips and the continuing existence of Pandora... but that isn't really what we're looking for I suppose

DJ Mencap, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Woah wait is no one going to comment on the fact Dorothy just posted here!?

Trayce, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:04 (sixteen years ago) link

hmmm anyone remember the cartoons in late era melody maker about the two djs? it wasn't "good" but it was better than a lot of the stuff up thread.

acrobat, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh oh and Moody DJ in Select... it wasn't brilliant or anything either but was quite clever in that it was quite nerdy about dance culture but zinged eg jungle and ambient enough for indie kids to laugh along

Trayce. Please explain.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I Don't get it... Why does the guy who confesses his indie guilt have vampire teeth? And why did he put the Dolly Parton cassette in his mouth? Are these two things interrelated?

Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:12 (sixteen years ago) link

actually Tuomas that was the only thing on this entire thread I laughed at, but I can't explain why

marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I agree that the "hugging a mestruating woman" strip is the worst. Because, you know, when you hug a woman with mensies some blood may squirt out of her! EW!

Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

x-post
I mean I can try, but...you know the speeches people give at AA and NA meetings about how they hit rock bottom?

marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:21 (sixteen years ago) link

The vampire is a long-running character. I dunno - I think Dom's posted one poor C&G strip and two good ones, so I don't know what point he's trying to make.

Mark C, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, so hitting the rock bottom is putting Dolly Parton in your mouth, I get that. But why the teeth?

Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Whoops, x-post.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Did Mitch Clem use to do stuff in Punk Planet? I know I've been gently irritated by his strips somewhere in print

DJ Mencap, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:30 (sixteen years ago) link

the melody maker djs were called Herman and Sherman. or so i have been informed by a person who owns a cat and girl hoodie.

The only way I can make any sense of this one is if it's a They Might Be Giants reference.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 17 June 2007 00:02 (sixteen years ago) link

also, can we throw Penny Arcade and Dustinland into the debate here? PA is occasionally funny (when the video game refs don't go over my head) but this whole genre of comics that are just a stand-in for the author wearing a band shirt and saying shit they say to their friends has got to stop. wtf happened to comics about talking animals and incongruously worldly children?

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 17 June 2007 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

also, if you can't draw and just do photoshop and clip art shit fuck you

I didn't like how the author attempted comic-relief at the end of the strip (I think it's kind of a cop-out), but strips like this, and this storyline in particular are what prompt me to regularly read Questionable Content.

so hilarious to me that many of our Worst And Most Hated Webcomics not only are no longer publishing, but that the entire archive of, say, shreddedmoose no longer exists anywhere on the web. Shadow & Chug's dissolution seems particularly bathetic.

there's a rhythmic jolt between the 3rd and 4th panels that makes it impossible to rap these lines properly. it would work if it were "so kick back relax, let me put on some Adele for ya/ and tell you why I'm running for the town of Philadelphia," but as it is, you'd either have to throw your rhythm totally off or insert an awkward extra beat between "ya" and "while". c'mon, Randall Patrick Munroe, sort it out!
