So you are talking about mouth ulcers? Don't you have bonjela or anbesol where you are?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I have one of these...it started a couple days ago on the inside of my mouth, back by the molars, and it hurts like a bitch. When I was a kid I would get a cold sore on my lip for a few days every couple of years, and whatever I put on it (Zilactin, or Viractin maybe?) worked. Surely you can't put that on the inside of your mouth, though?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Mmm, tube of Bonjela, eat it all, mmmm.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:06 (nineteen years ago) link

mmm tasty bonjela!! U can't put cold sore treatments on the inside of your mouth!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

i've used anbesol before - all it does is numb the little fuckers, doesn't really get rid of 'em.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe if you use it in conjunction with something else so that you don't have pain in the mean time?

I have no idea what one should do in this situation so I'm going to make ludicrous suggestions until someone tells me I'm ruining ILE:

- Buy a parakeet and train it to live inside your mouth and peck off the canker sores.

- Douse them in hot sauce.

- Put liver in your pants.

- Douse them in hot sauce.

I did this over lunch.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

- Sell them into canker-slavery.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

My final tiresome post on the subject:

Surely you can't put that on the inside of your mouth, though?

Yes, you can, and do. Canker sores only occur inside your mouth and are suspected to be some kind of auto-immune response to injury (think carelessly jabbing your gum with the plastic part of the toothbrush, biting cheek) or stress.

The ones that occur outside the mouth are cold sores. I think those are the ones that are viral.

- Sell them into canker-slavery.

"Send them on vacation to see the ruins of Canker-Wat"? "When their ship departs, play 'Cankers Aweigh'"?

If you haven't switched to toothpaste without sodium laurel sulfate yet, you might try that. Apparently, 4 out of 5 people who get canker sores are reacting to that stuff. It's what makes toothpaste foamy.

I had a WebMD scare the other day where for a moment there I thought my recurring sores on my gums were a form of herpes. I was phewing like mad when I found out they were only canker sores.

Get an rx for aphthasol. Amazing shit right there. Rx-strength lidocaine gel is also sooo nice.

Eh I'd rather herpes sores than ulcers - at least you can kill coldsores within 38 hours with zovirax/virasolve cream, mouth ulcers just persist for weeks and hurt like fuck and I hate them.

one art, please (Trayce), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm my exp is the opposite! ulcers go away pretty quick and coldies hang around for a week or so ;_;

balls by titleist (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

You have to get to the coldsore within hours w/virasolve etc or else it's too late, thats the only catch.

i have the worst canker sore I've had since the time i had a 3 cm diameter one on my soft palate that left a scar after drinking high proof crotian vodka. it's on the inside of my lip on the left hand side and when i drink a beverage the fluid lands directly on it. anything hot, cold or acidic is hell.

y’all getting enough fruit and veg?

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 22:24 (four years ago) link

i eat lots of fruit and vegetables. I've always suffered from them. they only really happen if i hurt my mouth. i have quite fangy incisors and bit the same part of my inner lip twice in quick succession and i knew what was coming.

This stuff is great for canker sores:

I’ve suffered from canker sores most of life, often having more than one at a time. They always have gotten worse during times of stress. 5 years ago a new dentist suggested I might be allergic to sodium laurel sulfate, the foaming agent in nearly all toothpastes. I switched to one without it and I haven’t had a canker sore since.

Dan S, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 23:13 (four years ago) link

Biotene PBF oral rinse might help. My husband gets them a lot so I did some research a few years ago and this was recommended. He noticed a marked decrease in the frequency of canker sores.

I think lysine supplements are recommended too, although he never tried them.

just1n3, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 23:18 (four years ago) link

yeah otm about biotene. Also salt water rinses. My spouse gets these a lot because of the alignment of his teeth. Regulate the high acid wines.

Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 23:26 (four years ago) link

Biotene is the one commercial brand toothpaste that I know of that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate, it’s the one I’ve been using

Dan S, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 23:31 (four years ago) link

i used to get em as a kid but haven't much since my late-20s or so.

lyseine tablets always seemed to help me. i'd take a couple orally and also break one up and mix w water into a little paste and put it directly on the sore. sounds crazy but it always did the trick and healed twice as fast.

good tips on this thread. thanks.
biting my lip or cheeks almost always causes a canker and stress is a huge factor for me as well. i’ve gotten them since i was a kid. SLS free toothpaste has helped. will try biotene and lysine since i have one coming in today
