I don't know if Minnesota is a racist bunghole of a town or not, but I do think the criticism of Jackson has been fair. So far his career trajectory has been similar to Kyle Boller's, both of them cannon armed quarterbacks with a middling passing percentages drafted purely on potential. Those of type of players almost never pan out in the NFL.

Redskins’ fans are rooting for Colt Brennen? Weak armed system quarterbacks almost never make in the NFL either. I think Jason Campbell is going to be fine.

I would like to see FO do some research on QBs' starting performance relative to their predecessors' performance plus seasons-of-bench-warming experience under said predecessor. Barnwell had a line about Rodgers vs. Smith in re: class of 2005 explaining why he thought Rodgers would have been just as much of a bust had he gotten stuck in Smith's position.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

What QBs deserve criticism more than Tavaris and aren't hearing it?

I basically agree with this, except Trent Edwards.

But yeah the Brady rule. cf. Favre, Brett.

I really don't understand why teams still try to draft their way to ghreatness at the QB position. And it's always bad teams. Chicken or egg?

Are there any examples out there I'm forgetting of rookie quarterbacks just coming in and lighting it up from Day One? Marino?

rogermexico., Wednesday, 17 September 2008 01:22 (fifteen years ago) link

how about rofflesburger? daunte culpepper?

you mean absolute rookies or guys who caddy a couple years before getting the starting gig?

But Roffles was lucky enough to land on a team with playoff level talent. Most first round quarterbacks go to shit teams by definition. Then they are thrown into the mix much too early, only to get their brains smashed out through their ear holes... hello, David Carr. This is probably why a lot of spread quarterbacks wash out in the NFL; they're never given enough time to learn the pro game.

Peyton Manning, i guess. he broke a bunch of rookie records, right?

Gus Frerotte is Minnesota's option, which is to say not much of one. I'd probably be sticking with Tavaris Jackson. It's QB, it isn't like you can make a deal at this point to get someone else unless you are getting really desperate and calling old man Vinny.

Troy Aikman got the crap kicked out of him starting of the Cowboys as a rookie, but that team went like 1-15.

Police said Marinovich, 38, ran from officers who tried to stop him about 1:15 a.m. Sunday for skateboarding near the Newport Pier boardwalk, where skateboarding is prohibited.

He was found hiding in a carport about 1:30 a.m., police Sgt. Evan Sailor said. After searching Marinovich, police found about one gram of methamphetamine, a metal spoon and a hypodermic needle, Sailor said.

There's some talk around about the Vikings making a play for Jeff Garcia, but I can't imagine that happening. The Bucs would be nuts to make the move to Griese permanent.

Well the T-Jax debate will not be resolved this season: Frerotte named starter for rest of year.

Deserved recent Tarvaris hating aside, this really sucks and is all about a coach trying to not get fired.

effects:

1. replaces a chump with a chump, nothing gained
2. lets receivers off the hook when spotlight should be on them this week
3. trashes a whole pre-season of work on offense
4. completely undermines the good things about two unlucky defeats
5. damages team morale by underscoring that they are being coached by a cretin

It's a panic move 2 weeks into the season. I would have given it a little more time. The guy above who said they are making a waste of their pre-season is OTM, but I think Frerotte would have gotten some extra reps during camp due to the starter being suspect.

KC @ ATL - Falcons by default
OAK @ BUF - Bills Bills Bills Bills Bills
TB @ CHI - interesting fixture, will be revealing, I think. going with the Bears
CAR @ MIN - would've said MIN but honestly, fuck knows now. Carolina
MIA @ NE - if the Pats lose this game ESPN will be unreadble for the whole week. pray with me, folks
CIN @ NYG - Giants have the power
HOU @ TEN - Titans. Houston remains a mystery, which missing week two didn't help
ARI @ WAS - 'Skins. two wildly varying performances so far but guess maybe they learned a few things from week one.
NO @ DEN - Denver lookin' tasty.
DET @ SF - great game. lots to be excited about. 49ers ftw
STL @ SEA - NFC West is where football goes to die. who cares? Seattle i guess
CLE @ BAL - Ravens D
JAC @ IND - Colts get great opportuinity to right the ship vs oddly impotent Jax side
PIT @ PHI - this smells more like football. Eagles
DAL @ GB - think maybe Rodgers' wake up call in the 2nd half might've done him good. i'm going Wisconsin
NYJ @ SD - Chargers butcher Jets, get season back on track

Yeah, I heard that same thing this morning. Why the shit would MN open up the playbook for proven veteran / dead end Frerotte and not TJ? Is Childress trying to stack the deck against TJ?

What playbook do they even have to open up? Their concept of a big-play threat was paying Bernard Berrian to run fast in a straight line once in a while.

CIN @ NYG - gints
HOU @ TEN - tits
ARI @ WAS - skins

KC @ ATL - I'll take Atlanta. "You play to win the game." Oh how far the hyped have fallen.
OAK @ BUF - Bills seem pretty solid. Oakland seems a bit more like a sitcom version of a football team like "1st and Ten" than usual. It would be funny if they were having to go to games in a big black and silver bus and they had some old grizzelled guy with a big stoagie driving them around.
TB @ CHI - I want the Bears to win. Chucky needs to get checked for putting Griese in charge of the store.
CAR @ MIN - I'm going Panthers. Minnesota's coach mumbledy mumble is already playing the C.Y.A. move in week three as his ass is grass if they don't win this year.
MIA @ NE - Logic says Patriots, but I could see Miami pulling an upset.
CIN @ NYG - Giants are rolling and the Bungles are back. NYG have a pretty sweet early schedule.
HOU @ TEN - Houston seemed like they had a bit of everything last year now they seem like they have a bit of nothing. I'm going Titans. Even at his age, Kerry Collins is a pretty decent back up QB at this point.
ARI @ WAS - This is a pretty interesting match up, I'll go Washington at home.
NO @ DEN - I'm going Broncos as I think they are going to win the AFC West. NO is interesting and this could be a fun game to watch.
DET @ SF - Detroit is on the road, so 49ers it is.
STL @ SEA - Seahawks look pretty cruddy, but the RAMS look terrible. Seattle at home.
CLE @ BAL - I think this is a game Cleveland has to win. I'm going Browns. It will be interesting to see how Flacco does.
JAC @ IND - Colts. This game, especially in Indy is usually a pretty brutal game. Two years ago, I swear it was one of the more nasty games I have seen, there was injuries all over the place for both clubs. Fred Taylor usually has a big game against the Colts, but I think Peyton will get a couple of bombs on target.
PIT @ PHI - Good and interesting matchup, I feel Eagles in a squeaker.
DAL @ GB - Another interesting rematch from last year, I want to take the Pack, but I think Dallas wins it.
NYJ @ SD - Boy this game is a lot more interesting than usual, but I think SD is the better club.

earlnash, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

KC @ ATL - Atlanta going over .500 this year? signs point to no, but I would assume they can get to .666 for week 3
OAK @ BUF - Buffalo looking real
TB @ CHI - Chicago looking realer; I like Forte A LOT
CAR @ MIN - Panthers; Minnesota fans may begin loud lamenting
MIA @ NE - Patriots, but closer than it should be!
CIN @ NYG - I've never seen the Giants look this good, but they still lack some killer instinct. I've never seen the Bengals look this bad.
HOU @ TEN - Titans surprisingly average offense getting the job done; a 3-0 start doesn't guarantee playoffs, but it sure is putting them in the right direction
ARI @ WAS - Arizona seems geared to ring up some crazy scores, Washington does not
NO @ DEN - What a good looking game! I'm going with Denver, but I can't say either way would surprise me.
DET @ SF - I really really don't like the niners so Detroit out of spite
STL @ SEA - St. Louis is the worst team in the league by far right now
CLE @ BAL - Cleveland or bust
JAC @ IND - Colts gettin' healthier
PIT @ PHI - I like Pittsburgh to go deep in the playoffs and slow down McNabb a bit in this one
DAL @ GB - Dallas, but under duress
NYJ @ SD - Chargers HAVE to win this, right? I mean, right?
