imo the reason thabo can't shoot anymore is that defense started guarding him a little (slow release)
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:27 (nine years ago) link
thabo shooting 41/32 while never being guarded btw not sure what that is in per 36min averages
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:27 (nine years ago) link
thabo had two years where he shot the three well
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link
I just totally disagree with the idea that there's no place for defensive role players. You really don't need 5 great scorers on the court, as the Warriors are proving. Yeah Bogut can pass a little, and a guy like Rodman had OREB and passing too, but it's ok and perhaps even a net positive to have guys who are entirely focused on defense. There hasn't been some sea change where guys like that aren't useful. They were useful back in the 70s and 80s when pace was high and they're useful now too.

right and the league adjusted imo. Started doing soft close outs.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link
i feel like in todays game u need to be able todo some offense, like even if u are big #1 rim protecting center at least be able to catch and dunk on the roll
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link
I mean look at the Rockets with Pat Bev. There's not a lot on offense there, and they really miss him.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:33 (nine years ago) link
i mean like fine i u want to use him situationally off the bench to cool down a primary scorer but they cldve got someone better for that role prob
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:33 (nine years ago) link
beverly can like dribble and stuff, thabos a stiff!
well he's a point guard, relative to their positional skill set we're talking about a similar situation
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:34 (nine years ago) link
I mean Thabo's getting 10 pp36 somehow right? if he's doing that without dribbling I'm impressed!
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link
the hawks offense is god is how i break it down to an extent
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link
Well that's the situation where defensive role players thrive so...
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link
but if they got someone better then they wouldve been even better
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:37 (nine years ago) link
i mean they gave that dude 4m a year for three years!
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:38 (nine years ago) link
theres a million D and no three players available for way less than that
Well now you're changing gears
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link
imo the thing with thabo is he's like the most replaceable player i can think of
― call all destroyer, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link
thabo sefolosha is definitely replaceable. but it makes perfect sense that he won a title with that pistons team - which was a madcap collection of roleplayers and B+ dudes w/o a clear star (although i guess sheed was more of a star than even the best-known hawks player) - and also why he's on a team like the hawks now.
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:57 (nine years ago) link
uhh
― call all destroyer, Friday, 10 April 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link
you are thinking of someone else i think?
aw what the hell. *facepalm*

i was thrown by the picture matt deployed which is in fact ben wallace and my mind went poof, woooowwww
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:04 (nine years ago) link
let me make up for that incredibly dumbassed mistake with a predictable yet amusing thing about allen iverson i just read, as told by matt barnes:
One early lesson came from Iverson, his teammate for half a season in Philadelphia. “Allen was the first guy that showed me how NBA players spend money in strip clubs,” Barnes says. “That guy went. HARD. He’d throw so much money, and this was when I was first in the league, that I used to take my foot and scoop the s— under my chair and either re-throw it or put some in my pocket. He’d throw $30,000, $40,000 every time we went. I’m like, ‘You realize what I can do with this money?’”
― slothroprhymes, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:11 (nine years ago) link
Allen "Down Payment" Iverson they called him

i stand by all the parts of my denunciation of thabo
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:38 (nine years ago) link
well initially it was a denunciation of defensive role players
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:39 (nine years ago) link
that too, tho as i was clear abt u can have defensive role players they just need to be either a. better than thabo at O or b. big man rim protectors
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link
srsly tho ppl like ai who both embrace and expose the absurdity of capitalism are heroes imo
― Clay, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link
there was the story when matt gieger bought his house how iverson accidentally left behind a mercedes and a pile of cash

this was not your argument as initially presented, you are changing gears, moving goalposts etc.
If your argument is that there's some really key offensive difference between Andre Iguodala 2015 and Thabo 2015 idk man.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:43 (nine years ago) link
per 36 stats are deceiving imo, if thabo was decent on offense he would prob shoot more than 4 times per game
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link
I always heard that Iverson just sat at the stage and tipped ones dourly, maybe he just had a bad day.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link
i'd suggest that ai write a book on strip club etiquette but i don't think it would have a very wide audience

he's very much not decent on offense and neither is Iguodala and yet they're rotation players for two elite teams in this modern, changed NBA that doesn't like defensive role players
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link
igoudala's shot really comes and goes but he can still make things happen on the fastbreak and is a nifty passer, they're not really comparable offensive players
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link
all good teams have bad players on them it doesnt mean those players are making the teams better it just means those are the players the teams have
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link
he plays for an offensive juggernaut that creates transition opportunities nonstop and averages 1 more assist per 36 and the same number of points xp

your argument was that it's never "fine" to have a guy who doesn't offer anything on offense and it seems very much "fine" for these two teams that are the top seeds in their conferences.
So now you're making it all about Thabo being specifically, legendarily bad in some way which doesn't really wash.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link
being a bad offensive player on the wing/perimeter is a much harder sell than being a bad offensive player down low imo
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link
matt obviously like if a team had the best four starters in the league it wld be "fine" to have whoever playing with them, u r a master class in pedantic bad faith point missing
― lag∞n, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link
it wouldn't be fine, you'd notice it for sure if they had, for example, austin rivers in the lineup.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link
it seems obvious to me that thabo is a useful and competent regular season player who becomes a big sore thumb in the playoffs
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link
but if you had 4 offensive studs? A guy like Thabo would fit in well. xp
we've had way too many arguments about thabo sefalosha on this board
well he is very bad
