“I hate the idea that people will go around and say, ‘It’s like Minecraft but in space.’ Fuck off!” - a thread for No Man's Sky

Absurdly ambitious space exploration game promises procedurally-generated galaxy where any star you can see in the sky will be accessible for visiting, involves space-combat and ecosystems that will become increasingly weird the further out to the rim of the galaxy you go.

Remains to be seen what will come of this and it'll probably be a long time coming, but right now I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm excited to the point of arousal. Feel free to join me.

this looks insane

Ambitious, I hope it becomes a reality - this is game I think I've been waiting for since Damocles on the Amiga.

Also I think this might be the first trailer in a long time that I've seen and instantly thought 'Next Gen', rather than the usual bland sequels and remakes that have clotted up the releases lately.

(and by Next Gen I don't specifically refer to ps4 and xbone, but generally to video game advancement)

Burned by Spore, cynical forever. This looks super nice though!

I am cautious about this, but OTOH it looks like the cover of a late 70s sci-fi novel, in other words, fucking awesome.

Yeah, the gullible and uninformed part of me is thinking "Wait, is this just the sort of thing they can do now?". The rest of me remembers that pretty much anytime anyone has made these sorts of promises in the past I've ended up disappointed. Spore, exactly.

Windsor Davies, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 15:19 (ten years ago) link

Nevertheless, much easier to maintain 'gullible and uninformed' than to in-the-loop and cynical, so for now I remain incautiously optimistic

The video looks amazing, but it creepily reminds me of those "Infinite resolution!" hoax videos that used to pop up.

Nhex, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 15:58 (ten years ago) link

And being a PC game, there's always the question of 'what insanely spec'ed out machine is this running on?'

Not clear what platform it's being built for atm. There was this though:

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but our background is as console developers, and I think everything about the game bears hallmarks of that,” says Murray. “In terms of your controls, in terms of the fluidity of the game, this is not a quirky, hard-to-decipher experience.”

And one of the Sony guys has already been on Twitter all-but confirming that he's registered interest in bringing it to PS4

looks awesome

i probably won't be able to play this on anything for a long time but i'm really interested in hearing what it's like.

"procedurally-generated" makes me v wary but super interested in this anyway

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

why does that make you wary? i suspect a lot of games with large gameworlds these days start with a procedural landscape and then build on top of that, since modeling it all out by hand would take forever. these guys are just taking the next step along that line
