In one corner we have Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, and something else 2 I don't care about.

In the other corner we have Animal Crossing City Folk, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort.

They are all going to sell a fuck-ton of copies. And whatever that game is where you simulate animals, the new EA thing, is probably also going to fly off the shelves. And who knows what else but frankly I can't be bothered.

I don't particularly want to play any of this stuff. I don't know if I'll be ABLE to play any of this stuff. I feel like I did about music post-2001, I no longer like anything that's coming out and all I want to listen to is a bunch of stuff that's almost a decade old or more.

Does anybody else get this? I mean particularly in light of E3, I'm just not stoked for any of it. OK I'm a little bit stoked for Wii Music because it seems like it would be hilarious if you could get four people to jam on it while drunk, for about ten minutes, but that's a very low bar for enthusiasm.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 04:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I think this particular show being weak is definitely a factor. The Xbox price cut/new model/dashboard seems to be the most exciting news of the show, which is pretty damn sad. 95% of the things mentioned up there are sequels!

Also, everything is too damn expensive to really keep up with, it's like console gaming as a whole has almost become was PC gaming grew into earlier this decade. (After Diablo III was announced, sales of Diablo II - a 10 year old game - shot up to #2... what does that say about the current PC gaming market?) The only system I'm really into this generation has been the DS.

I'm very skeptical about Wii Music now, because Donkey Konga was a good gimmick/peripheral that was pretty badly handled as a music game. It's very unclear right now how your remote actions in Wii Music actually DO anything (do they?), which seems like strange and worrisome to me.

Not to say it's all negative - if I had infinite time/money/friends who were into this stuff I'd probably love Rock Band 2 and Animal Crossing Wii. SPORE I'm still kind of hopeful for, because the Creature Creator is really swell, but I'm still worried the gameplay itself will be as hollow as The Sims.

i'm excited about animal crossing wii, but apart from that i feel the same way

Gears blows. Resistance looks meh and wouldn't get me to buy a ps3. I have no desire for Wii or karaoke bullshit. The high end stuff that has some originality to it is where the appeal is for me.

Hey, it happens - we all get burned out now and then. I don't think E3 is as big of a deal as maybe it once was, so maybe some people were expecting too much? This year reminds me a lot of last year, which was probably the first year I paid attention (even though I went to at least a few E3s before that, just didn't pay much attention back then). Lots of sequels always though. I think there's plenty of promising stuff on the horizon, even if it wasn't the focus of any of the big three's press conference.

I think Mirror's Edge looks VERY promising
As does the new Prince of Persia
I'm curious about GTA on the DS
Still hyped about Left 4 Dead
Little Big Planet
Resistance 2 looked better than I thought it would, Infamous, Gears 2, Resident Evil 5
and the download stuff like Bionic Commando Rearmed, Geometry Wars 2, PixelJunk Eden

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 05:39 (fifteen years ago) link

great games, or even slightly good games, have mostly for the last decade been few and far between for me personally. I kinda put this down to me getting old and my love for GTA clouding out any of the other entries.

So now i rarely even buy games anymore, it's mostly hours on gta or the odd dip into retro gaming.

Or, as is happening at the moment, trying to make my own!

Ste, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 08:38 (fifteen years ago) link

the third banjo kazooie game looks good and so does fable 2.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 08:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't really care about any of the games listed on this thread except gears of war 2 and that's only because I really enjoyed the multiplayer on the first one, despite its myriad flaws. I would be excited about CoD5 but it's being developed by treyarch and they have a poor track record; so I'm holding out for CoD6.

seriously tho, isn't this just a function of getting old? or is there some platonic ideal that you have in mind, tombot, that just isn't being catered for? if they announced a terranigma 2 would that razz you?

czn, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 09:14 (fifteen years ago) link

no, because if they announced a terranigma 2, it would wind up looking and playing like either Oblivion or FFX etc and FUNK DAT

sometimes I think this a function of getting old and then other times I think "ok every games person I know from 20-some to 50-some years had a blast with DQ8" and wonder why it is certain things are being humped to death right now (grandma casual and the family vs taupe gray sniper and the squad) while "my segment" - the non-yaoi, non-cosplay RPG fan - gets turd polish. I may be picky about my cheeseburger, but at the end of the day, it's a fucking cheeseburger, people, everybody loves a good cheeseburger.

Eh I'm hardly making sense. More later maybe.

anyway, this kinda happened to me wrt music circa 04, especially when it came to paying attention to new music. i basically just listen to talk radio now, idk what the gaming equivalent of that would be. but i feel u doggie~

Will M., Wednesday, 16 July 2008 14:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i've been resigned to this for a long time now. basically the only reasons i might get a wii are to download old games and play that new retro mega man. nu-old-school rpgs are cool, but no way do i have time for them.

i'd love to play RE5 if it's as intuitive and fun as RE4, but no way i'm buying a console just for that. i still have an interest in games but it's increasingly rare that i actually play anything. shit done passed me by.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

(i am totally on board with Rock Band, but since it's only fun to play with your friends, i'll leave up to my friends to own it.)

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Doing a video game rental service has proven to work pretty well for me. I dip my toe in on stuff i'm curious on and then let it go. I buy about one game every three or four months, play the shit out of it for a few days or (rarely) weeks and then let it pass. Can't commit as insanely as I used to.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

can you still rent game systems from video stores? are there still video stores? b/c i would totally rent an xbox 360 and RE5, turn off my phone, and have an old-school nerd weekend.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I didn't expect to have a negative reaction to RE5 because of its setting but I saw some gameplay footage and basically was like "ok fuck this game" (not that I was in any danger of buying it anyway; me + survival horror = NO).

Lately I've been really geeking out on tennis games; also, I am SUPER SUPER AMPED for Soul Calibur IV.

yeah that's what i'm talkin about. spend the winter w/ GTAIV, CoD4, HL2, orange box, all that.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 17 July 2008 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I've become a weirdly conservative gamer over the last three years or so. The new games I pick up are disproportionally RPGs or strategy games and even those are mostly either sequels or retro-fetish Atlus releases for the DS. I still play other types of games but I have to get over a fairly strong initial reluctance to fuck with something like Gears of War so I end up playing Disgaea 3 instead.

six months pass...

I started playing Banjo Kazooie 3 last night on the 360. My tv is practically too small to read any of the character chats. And the whole time I play it I keep saying "damn I should have waited until I can afford a bigger TV with HD and better. Anyways, the game is pretty fun so far even though it has been mostly building vehicles and driving them. I'm not even sure if you can die in this version. I would like to see a little more platformer stuff, but the game does remind me of Mario 64 so far. (Get enough puzzle pieces and you open a door to a new land). The game kinda has a sandbox feel to it.

born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

f.e.a.r. was never considered a top notch fps. RE5 looks 2nd rate too. the fps genre still kills most imo.

bnw, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i think maybe the problem is that the glut of them is so huge that anything worthwhile gets kind of lost, also things like fracture "reinventing the genre" by introducing one new game mechanic and completely sucking in every other regard dont help.

born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 22:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I was playing Doom recently, and I wondered "How come this is so much more fun to me than Halo 3 or other modern FPSs?" I think part of the answer is that modern FPSs are too beholden to realism. Even when they depict grotesque fantasy worlds, they still insist on depicting them in a realistic visual style. I would love to play a FPS that was in the visual style of something like Okami or etc. One of the things I like about Left 4 Dead is the cartoony quality of the characters (similar to TF2, I think). Even Gears of War has style, even if that style is incredibly lame to me. But the vast majority of the rest of games are seemingly all about rendering space/horror/combat gore in the most realistic manner possible.

Meanwhile, Wall-E, a game that would strongly benefit from a graphics engine like that of Far Cry 2 to depict its dusty future world, instead is rendered in the blandest Maya 101 world, completely divorced from the awesome visual depiction of Earth in the film.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i suppose that bioshock is a shooter, and so is dead space, so i should mitigate my comments a little because i liked both of those, but the reasons i did are kind of despite the shooter aspect. i think pretty much any straight up combat style shooter is boring as hell, and those seem like the ones that are the most successful.

born of nililism and iconoclasm (John Justen), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 23:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I like Gears of War fine. It's not amazing, but it's pretty entertaining.

I thought Call of Duty 4 was the best fps since Counterstrike around 1.2.

There are a lot of bad shooters. But in general there are just lots of bad games. The latter has always been true. The former being true does not mean that all shooters should written off.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

In order to change the font size in Banjo Kazooie 3 you need to have an internet connection for that thing. The one time I dragged a wire all the way to the router my xbox360 was hanging in mid air.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

The former being true does not mean that all shooters should written off.

I would never write them off, I just wish they were more diverse.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 22:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I, on the other hand, would write them off.

I don't mind buying the same game over and over if I like it (see my love of 2D and 3D fighters). I liked Doom and I liked Goldeneye, but nothing about any other shooter has appealed all that much to me outside of sporadic bouts of multiplayer fun while drinking. Plus, I suck at them.
