Two demos of PES 2012 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are planned for release, Konami has announced.
The first goes live on Wednesday, and is based on a preview build of the game. Six teams are included: Manchester United, AC Milan, FC Porto, Napoli, Santos and Panarol. 10 minute matches and Challenge Training mode, in which you can practice the new control systems, are available.
Because the first PES 2012 demo "will not be truly representative of the final game," Konami will release a second demo "reflecting the final version's feel and gameplay" in mid-September.
This'll have 10-minute matches, too, but with Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich, Inter, Rangers, Club America and Sport Club Internacional.
Meanwhile, Konami confirmed release dates for the various versions of the game.
The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 version launches on 14th October. The PSP and PS2 version launches on 28th October. And the Wii version goes live on 4th November.
Dates for iOS and Nintendo 3DS "will be announced shortly".
this is an interesting strategy imo. what is the thinking here?

Surely someone has made a horrible, unplayable port of SWOS for iOS, no? Proper SWOS, on (3)DS/PSP would be great though.
I haven't bought a PES/FIFA since PES2009 I think. As ever, I'll check out the demos and see if I care, but I find the demos are normally brutally difficult, and if I'm not scoring goals, I'm not going to buy the game.
― CraigG, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 15:44 (twelve years ago) link
you kinda have to play the demos now, more than ever. for the few years up until the fifa 10 revamp that series was bad enough to still be a poor relation to the inbred, shuffling corpse of pes, whatever anyone claims to the contrary. pes finally died in 2010 and ea actually managed to take advantage. 2011 fifa got a little worse for some reason and konami did a partial revamp of pes that gave it the edge imo. you really can't know what to expect now, and even demos aren't the greatest indicator. the pes 2-demo stratgey makes me think they are either super excited for their new game or really worried, so i suspect one way or another it might turn out to be a fairly obvious choice this year.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
the closest thing to a modern-day SWOS was the XBLA release a few years ago; I never got a chance to play it, unfortunately. in the meantime UAE will have to do.

back in ps2 days me and a friend laid out a couple of quid on the notoriously bad ps1 port of the notoriously bad '98 sensi game. we can't have played more than a handful of games but the experience was so traumatizing that it basically destroyed the memories of playing and loving the original sensi games pretty much every day for 4 years, including school lunchtimes. despite the good reviews i was glad that the xbla swos never made it to psn. i can't go back.

first PES demo is kinda promising so far. different enough that it took a few games to get used to, in particular tackling, with the replacement of the hold and apply pressure button with actual timed tackling. there's a little bit of awkwardness to it all which hopefully will disappear with practice or with ongoing tweaks, and the game probably hangs on that. but, promising. it seemed...less mechanical than PES characteristically is.
FIFA demo in a couple weeks, second PES demo around then too it sounds.

I had a pre-season of joyless dickings by Italian teams possibly caused by adopting [unpopular Midlands giants]' current 4-5-1
When the league kicked off all the games I had were entertaining and had different outcomes; the games felt fluid and it didn't feel like the result was a done deal at the start because eg the opposition were going to be camped behind the ball in their own area for the whole game - that happens for periods but you can get counterattacks or have a good player somehow run through the ranks
Also scored some nice classy finishes; it seems like maybe they want it to be more of a viable thing to run with the ball and do spectacular shit from time to time, instead of it being some expert level thing for guys who make highlight videos of themselves
I dunno I mean when I first get a new football game I always have a flush of yokel-like "it's just like the real thing!" amazement before it becomes tediously familiar, but it's good stuff so far

PES is day one for me now for two reasons:
- you can now send players on runs, yass!- you can now use full manual passing, double yass!
(I know PES has always had full manual but it's always been consigned to the right stick - and you sometimes had to use R3 too, yuck. PES12 has full manual using the X/A button.)

Finally got FIFA 12 today. It's going to take some getting used to. I love the fact that you can pick a team and get automatically paired with someone at the same level. I use a 4* team and it was a pain getting drawn against people unwilling to be anyone other than Real or Barca in FIFA 11.
The big issue for me, other than my inability to execute a cross, is the ball physics. I think someone mentioned in the other thread that EA get a good idea and beat you to death with it in an effort to show you how clever they are. The ball physics is fine, mostly, but become a big issue when you're shooting. It seems incredibly easy to just wallop it at the keeper and pick up a cheap goal when it bounces off him.

so, PES this year is actually superb except for the fairly significant problem that the online is weirdly broken. my friend could get online with it fine the first couple times he tried, but then he just couldn't get it to connect at all, and eventually it was just locking him up on a loading screen which he had to quit out...which kinda bricked his ps3, or at least he had to look up some shit online to fuck around with the HD and the operating system to fix it. so we decided with heavy hearts to sack it off and trade in for fifa 12. i play a bit vs randoms but i mostly play against this one friend, so no point doing otherwise. we played a 2-3 hours the other night and the first couple games it was bluetooth banter as per but gradually we descended into silence. this shit is so bad. i mean, not just bad in comparison, but bad on its own merits. i am stunned that i am stuck with this POS for the year. i could not be in a worse mood about this. and seriously, under the circumstances we were desperate to give it every break we could. we realized pretty much immediately that we had to put nearly everything on manual, which is kind of making excuses for the programming being shit but yeah i can see people maybe would prefer to play like this anyway because of the freedom, but that doesn't change the fact that the core game is garbage. at this point i feel like i would rather get a new friend and trade back for PES.

This is the first year in a long time where I haven't bought either. Hoenstly, I felt both demos were better than last year's games, but not enough better for me to drop another $60 on either. I think it's going to be a waiting game for the next generation now as I don't feel like the games are really doing enough. In fact, I've re-installed PES 5 and feel like that will more than do for now.

I like the new FIFA too, but it doesn't differentiate as well nor have as good computer controlled AI. If I played online I'm sure I'd play FIFA, but I don't so the AI is crucial.

picked up FIFA 14 for the 360. how do you get your man to jump for a header? the AI does it all the time and it's killing me on corner kicks. Hull Tiger City will not be denied.

From memory, press B and a direction and you should head it out. Try to change to the appropriate player with the left bumper a fraction of a second beforehand.

yeah ok, thanks. i'm having better luck now, dunno what i was thinking. got Hull City two wins in their first two matches. playing ten minute halfs. not a lot of corner kicks so far, not much crossing, most of the games have been played from the middle.
this scouting stuff is getting tedious. i just want to overpay on the transfer market tbh.

so ilxors have stopped playing this stuff, huh?

Half-tempted by the World Cup edition of Fifa but €40 is too much for what is mostly the same game with some extra international teams.

I bought FIFA 13 a year after everyone else and couldn't get on with it. I think I'm done with football games - the endless tweaking to someone's idea of the perfect rendition of the beautiful game has taken all of the fun out of it.
I think graphical improvements have made games look worse - like a cartoony FIFA 10 Messi looks more like Messi than a 2014 1080p Messi_HD coz you can see all the things that aren't quite right. Players also feel kind of detached from their environments - like in those driving games where the cars feel pivoted on a central vertical axis.

The next-gen FIFA 15 demo is very good
the ball control feels a lot more variable and realistic, and dribbles with scampering technique pixies like Silva and Sterling feel v different this year
the graphics still aren't remotely impressive compared with e.g. the 2K Sports stuff though, sort of embarrassing how uniformly textured and waxwork the players look

starting to feel an urge to pick up FIFA 15 - 4 years after getting off the wagon
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 10:18 (nine years ago) link
on the fence about whether this actually good or not
seem to endure >5 immaculate no-look AI backheel through balls, a patently ridiculous penalty/red card and at least one serious injury every single fuckin match
also, a player with three years left on his deal saying "even though I want to leave you can still select me for the team if you want" and not being able to batter him

The PES demo blows the FIFA one out of the water. I'm sure I'll once again end up owning both at some point, but PES looks like where I'll start this year.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:26 (nine years ago) link
think the thing in FIFA where two balls get on the pitch and you get to wait for someone to toepoke the second one out of play at a glacial pace before you take a throw-in might be the worst feature that's ever been intentionally coded into a video game ever
it's completely skippable but even so

Picked up PES. Best football AI I've ever seen. Not perfect, but they'll at least try to play.

this this thread's drop in activity is the best sign that ILX has grown up to middle-age, dulled by adult responsibilities

or a sign that these games have been str8 garbage for at least a couple years now. EZ has me wanting to try a demo again there at least.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 24 November 2014 15:21 (nine years ago) link
try the PES demo. It's not perfect or anything, but it's fun and the AI doesn't make you want to throw your controller across the room.

Went PES this year; setting up the real teams is a ballache for the 30 minutes it takes, but it's much funner to move the ball around than in FIFA, with its beach ball passing and seemingly horrendously botched new set piece system

friend is trying to drag me back in. i basically quit this shit entirely maybe 3 years ago when both pes and fifa were disgraceful. but were still getting great reviews of course. can we get some ethics in games journalism, please.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 3 October 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link
Why are these things a) so fucking hard to satisfactorily play? and b) so long-winded to even set up a match? Like in a world where the Fifa games are literally less user-friendly than Football Manager what is the fucking point?

Plunged back into FIFA after a 5 year break - yep, its slow and grinding. I was tempted to go for PES but the lack of real names/clubs seemed too much of turn-off
