The upcoming console generation (2012 onwards)

There are lots of rumors about Nintendo's next console flying around -- better-than-current-gen HD graphics, touchscreen controller, able to play games on the controller only, backwards compatible with all Wii games. This can be a thread for all news and talk of the next generation system.

What does 'able to play games on the controller only' mean?

They already tried this with the Gamecube/GBA and the Wii/DS. For some reason no-one seems to care much.

Also remember this Project Café dealio is probably nothing more than an official leak with a weird-arse controller concept chucked in just to throw everyone off the scent.

The VMU worked out all right since it was on the standard memory card anyway. With the DS/GBA connectivity, though, it was expecting people to buy $100 controllers to play 4P Zelda. (That said, Pac Man Vs. was awesome.) If it's standard with the new Nintendo system that would be great, but probably also raise the price of extra controllers significantly, I'd gather.

For me, what this means is that I will probably get a PS3 right after E3 - there have already been sales popping up on all three consoles lately, the retailers have likely been clued in.

Nhex, Monday, 18 April 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Can't really see the point of a controller that can be used as a portable tbh. If that's what I wanted, I'd get a 3DS (presumably the next gen Nintendo will have connectivity to the 3DS), so then why have a complicated controller? I'm going to be looking at the TV screen, not a small screen in my hands. It's rumoured to be a touchscreen, but then that just makes it the modern equiv of these...

if it was a small screen that had your inventory or map or something then HUDs would not be needed any more. kind of like the bottom screen in a lot of DS games? can see that being quite useful. imagine Fallout with a Pipboy in your hand!

/人 ◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ (zappi), Monday, 18 April 2011 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, as pictured above, the DC kinda used it in that way but not for many games unfortunately.

if you wanna gamble, take that shit to vegas (Ste), Monday, 18 April 2011 13:26 (thirteen years ago) link

well, no -- for most ppl where they hold the pad is a ways outside of their peripheral vision -- it was okay when it was your vague indication of health in resident evil, but it wouldn't work for quake or whatever

as with the extra screen in ds games, a lot of the time, it feels like a good idea that good ideas about how to implement don't come along very often - & so the question is whether the extra costs in hardware (and in just plain looking goofy) can be justified when only one in (x) games is going to come up with anything for it

thomp, Monday, 18 April 2011 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i can see a controller based screen working as a surrogate for real world devices - say in GTA, your mobile/pager is ringing in your hand, you see a message saying "get to X as quick as possible" from your boss. you get into a car & the controller screen turns into a satnav, with the route marked out etc etc. none of this is going to happen of course.

/人 ◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ (zappi), Monday, 18 April 2011 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know that the costs for the controllers really need to be astronomical if they are touch screen. What's an iPod touch, like £100 or so? When the Wii came out it was £30 for a remote and £15 for a nunchuck, PS3 controllers still seem to mostly sit around the £45 mark, only 260 controllers seem to be frequently cheap in sales, and even they have a high RRP.

Take the iPod touch materials, you probably don't need 8Gb of storage, or a camera, etc. You could feasibly get down to a similar price mark. I still don't know what they would really do with it though, other than it being like the DS bottom screen.

I'm interested to see what actually gets shown - if anything - at E3 though.

this is the fun part with all the crazy conjecture before the mundane reality sets in after the reveal. particularly enjoying all the deluded people with the "zomg graffix 5 times better than teh xbawx" after IGN said that the console is "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360". i mean, IGN ffs.

I hope that most of the time it gives those schoolmarmy comments the Wii gives from time to time: "shouldn't you take a break from all this gaming, maybe go outside a bit?" and "look, Zelda is fun but 3 hours already? for crying out loud" and "Princess Peach is a cutie, we'll give you that, but call a real girl for once, will you?" and so on.

phoned microsoft, they told me my console was bricked. just before i packed it back up to return to the retailer i decided to try installing a factory reset file i found on the xbox one support site. it worked! the console restarted and i could download and install a system update.

after the update was ready, i put in forza horizon 2 to install. i was told i had to download a huge update before i could play. same for halo. same for titanfall. so basically i've now had a working console for like four hours and still haven't managed to play anything because i need to install huge fucking updates first.

A lot of sales this weekend, but I'm not sure if I should bite on the last generation versions of games or just wait further down the road to play a prettier or smoother version on PS4 a year from now. Thoughts on Diablo III, Wolfenstein: The New Order or Shadow of Mordor?

Nhex, Friday, 28 November 2014 05:16 (nine years ago) link

I personally would not bother with Diablo 3 on the older systems because Blizzard is no longer updating/patching those versions. Been playing it recently on PS4 and it's been a lot of fun. Particularly the local co-op. Game seems very well suited to consoles.

Ah, good point. I'll wait on that one for sure.

Nhex, Friday, 28 November 2014 06:13 (nine years ago) link

Agree that the PS4 version of Diablo 3 is good fun, esp if you have someone to play with locally (I prb wouldn't play it on my own though). Mr Salsa Shark has been playing and enjoying Mordor on PS4 - I don't recall him saying anything bad about it. But that's probably one to wait for on PS4... it does some interesting stuff with badguy personalities/AI learning which seems to function pretty well on the current gen but supposedly doesn't work as well on last gen.

salsa shark, Friday, 28 November 2014 07:57 (nine years ago) link

Good info, thanks; I'll wait on Mordor too. I'm guessing that will get repackaged with all the DLC by next year anyway by the time I get a PS4

Most indie games nowadays, if they're targeting multi-OS, end up doing Linux/Mac OS together anyway - pretty rare to see a game that's Windows/Mac or Windows/Linux.

Who M the best? (Will M.), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:24 (eight years ago) link

Wait until the end of E3 at least, but since Sony's in the lead with MS cutting their price I don't see it happening. If you're going to play your PS4 in the next six months you might as well get one next week.

THAT SAID, since Fallout 4 doesn't come out until November anyway, so you might as well wait until BF, so you can at least get two recent-ish free games with the system, as they do every year with BF bundles. Chances are there might even be a FO4 system bundle, though who knows if it'll be PS4 or X1 yet (we'll probably find out today or tomorrow).

Nice of them to port FO3 to Xbox 1 though, I like this trend (also happened with Bayonetta 2)

I'm kind of... impressed(?) that the 360 emulation on X1 is supposedly full system/OS emulation, so XBL thinks you're on a 360 too and in theory, all your downloadable games should work. If that's the case, it's actually a HUGE reason for me to get the X1 at some point in the far off future.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:58 (eight years ago) link

I imagine it's more complicated than it seems - Microsoft for some (probably very good) reason went with PowerPC processors for the xbox360, where the XboxOne uses x86 (like a traditional PC). That's more like getting Windows to run on an old Mac (before Apple also took the decision to switch from PowerPC to x86) than getting an older version of Windows to run on a new PC. I expect it's a pretty heavy translation layer to convert between the architectures, as they're so different.

It's part of the reason you often need surprisingly hefty PCs to run console emulators (like, take a look at the requirements to run the PS2 emu PCSX2; just to emulate a 300MHz processor they recommend a 3.2GHz dual core processor). I'm kind of surprised they even bothered to make the effort, but it makes the back catalogue more impressive and sets a big challenge to Sony to perhaps try and get the same running properly on the PS4.

CraigG, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 08:29 (eight years ago) link
