MAKE MORE THAN LIKE 5 WIIS AT A TIME DOUCHEBAGS. ITS ALMOST FEBRUARY.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the problem is that there is not enough space on current freight carriers to meet demand for the fucking things. they move hundreds of thousands of units in mere hours

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

if you consider that a single big box retailer can sell 50 of the things basically the instant they're inventoried, not even on the shelves, that's kind of insane from a logistics standpoint.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i know i know

i'm just annoyed, i've been waiting for this for freakin' ever!

I'll just buy it in Japan in a year.
Saves the modchip trouble and the supply trouble.

Waiting a year rather than a couple of weeks/months is saving you the supply trouble?

I has procured the Wii after a half-assed search via the above link! That was like 20 minutes ago and they are still showing in stock so u can do it 2.

Allyzay doesnt get into the monkeys or vindications (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

It's also saving me money and waiting for more games.
I hope a 'Pro Yakyuu' comes out for it.
Those are always lame. I love lame baseball games. It's more fun to lose at them. I'm good at that.

i haven't heard anything bad about that via sears since xmas time, so i'm making the assumption that they've figured that out at least sort've. i'm not expecting to get it for a while! the controllers seem to be the hardest to get thing.

where are the drudge sirens for the shocking "wii sells out" alert.

jon, it might come as a shock to you but I do not live in NYC, nor do I have a car so I have to rely on "local stores" and "one single Best Buy" and "one EB Games" to search for any of these things without the internets. So, no, there are not 3000 controllers available to me. If you'd like to buy me one and send it to me though, I'd be grateful :D

there's a lot of stuff going up online, like this week Toys r Us and EToys and Sears all had them (sears had them twice, I was in a mtg during the first sale though ;_;) and Amazon had 'em either this week or last, but it sells out quickly and the ones that don't sell out immediately are bundles, all of which are overpriced by at least $30 over what the list price would be for the individual items, which is fucked up.

if yr seriously still hunting for a wii online, just check the amazon page for it at noon EST (ie 9am california time) because that is when all internet shops put their products onsale and people go mad crazy tipping each other off on the amazon page (I've found it to be more reliable than the RSS tracker feeds but my work computer is REALLY F'ING OLD so that could be part of the problem)!

Allyzay doesnt get into the monkeys or vindications (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 23:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Why there are none in like actual stores and so many online (admittedly in weird spurts) is kind of insane but I'm guessing the mystery of the disappearing from stores wii might have a clue in the fact that eBay is so inundated with the things that the prices now hover ~$300, sometimes below.

Allyzay doesnt get into the monkeys or vindications (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Gamestop should start limiting the number that can be bought per person ever.... but how

UART variations (ex machina), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 23:18 (seventeen years ago) link

(xp) they're in stores. you're just at work when the deliveries come in. demand is still high so the employees tend not to put them out on the shelves and the wiis still sell out.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Kororinpa's like a really easy but awesome Monkey-Ball-meets-Marble-Madness game. You get different shaped balls, like rugby balls and pandas, which roll and bounce differently. The best thing about it, is there's no limit to how much you can tilt the level around, so you can flip the remote upside down to go on the ceiling in some bits. It's got great music, too :)

Lack of Bionic Commando and River City Ransom means the nostalgia value of the mini-NES is unfortunately close to 0 for me.

Granted, the one and only true RCR experience for this guy is playing it with the Sony Trinitron on mute while a cassette of Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam: The Album is on repeat. Fairly sure modern technology would find this completely impossible to emulate.

mh, Monday, 25 July 2016 14:07 (seven years ago) link

Setting aside the pros and cons of Zelda II - I'm a defender, but we got into it on Will M.'s fabulous poll thread - this thing will sell well but is kinda disappointing IMO. Especially since the Nintendo label still stands for some kind of 'quality' in my brain... feels strange to see this kind of mall-kiosk / behind-the-counter-at-Walgreens kind of item being put forth. It's going to make money, but you kind of hope they would burn the midnight oil making a masterpiece retro system rather than an adequate one.

Seems weird they didn't go with something that could connect to the internet and let you buy more games - now that would be interesting. My understanding is that you can basically do that by buying a discount Wii and going nuts, but I imagine that would not occur to a lot of people in the target market for this thing. Or they could have, IDK, put a USB slot on the side and sold 'expansion packs' or something with more games. I mean I don't know how hardware or software work at all, but it would be nice. Beyond nostalgia play of old favorites, or introducing them to the kids or whatever, emulation also gives you the chance to play all the crazy obscure games you never had, but have been hearing about for years.

Now, if I accept the 'fixed lineup' model, I guess I could still see myself getting one of these at some point... it's a crazy price point given the number of games that actually would justify serious hours put into them. I unloaded my NES a few years ago, and this would replace MOST of the games I actually kind of miss having around. And it's not like it having Mario Bros. and Ice Climber takes up space on my shelf that could go to something else. Still, while it's a legit solid "greatest hits" nostalgia package, everybody's nostalgia is a little different. I remember visiting kids' houses and all they had was Mario/Duck Hunt, baseball games, Pro Wrestling, Bad Dudes, Bayou Billy, and two weird games you never heard of. So they're probably not captured by this.

And even for a GOAT kind of list, you look at Will M.'s callbacks to the ballot poll top twenty and it's like, woah, no RCR, no Ducktales, no Contra, that's weird. I get that they weren't going to cram Earthbound Zero onto this, and accept a sort of 'best of the bunch' logic for including only Mega Man II. Going outside the top 20 of that poll, you hit a bunch of things that I think most NES-heads would consider classics. Here's the ones that seem most 'missing' to me:

22. Marble Madness
25. Castlevania III
26. Blaster Master
29. Life Force
33. Jackal
36. Dragon Warrior
45. Duck Hunt (OK obviously this thing wasn't going to have the light gun)
47. Adventures of Lolo

and maybe

23. Metal Gear
33. TMNT 1 (kind of a bullshit game but there's an audience for it)
35. Rampage
84. Rygar (OK this is just me, I admit it)
96. Batman

Frankly, there's an interesting thought-exercise here, how do you capture the 'pure essence' of a very popular system with a huge library? Greatest-games countdowns may make for a better collection of games, but when nostalgia's at play, do you cave and include Ghosts 'n' Goblins? Or Bayou Billy? Best-seller lists might over-weight bad licensed games, or early games that benefited from the dearth of titles (Kung Fu, say). Letting people just buy $1 "virtual cartridges" over the Internet, or even $20 "packs" of miscellaneous titles, would have solved everything, but perhaps the licensing/contracts for that would just be an impossible nightmare, I have no idea.

we're gonna live in spatula city (Doctor Casino), Monday, 25 July 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

Rygar was great, a long game with permadeath and no saves. after I won it felt like I could coast the rest of my life on that, tell the grandkids about it, glory days

They're using the same tactic for NES Classic. Every store that got them in stock to sell today only had somewhere between 3-12 total... mostly leaning towards the lower end of that.
