never heard of this before but it looks great

http://1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3144004&did=1

what can YOU tell me about this or the series in general?

and what about off-the-beaten-path wrestling games?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

The hype about the original is correct. It's a great game. Don't know about anything after that.

I would love to see an updated remake of Nintendo's NES Pro Wrestling... Star Man! ... but it'll probably never happen or will be ruined.

My fave wrestling game: WCW/nWo Revenge, and its follow-ups of No Mercy & WM2000. Great examples of how to make a wrestling game, thanks to a japanese gamedev house chock full of pro-wrestling freaks.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah WCW / nWo revenge was a personal benchmark of mine... I was going out with the daughter of an aerial engineer at the time when channel 5 used to show WCW on friday nights; his vigor and enthusiasm for the pantomime of WCW in (what is for me) its true glory day (post original sting, pre-WWF confab) was inspiring... neatly coincided with the N64 and that game

8 player battle royale!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I have trouble getting into WWF/WCW themed games because I don't really dig on that stuff. I'd play a classic, mid-80s themed WWF game though.

WWE Superstars No Longer Allowed To Play Video Games
Story posted by Tim Brown on September 21, 2005

http://www.24wrestling.com/index.php?id=news/1693

-- The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that yet another strange rule has been recently added to the long list that WWE has been putting together lately.

Although it’s not known when the exact date this came into effect was, WWE management has recently told everyone that they are no longer allowed to play video games backstage at WWE events. No reason has been given for this new rule yet.

Shelton Benjamin and Kane are both known for their mad skills when it comes to video games. In fact, Shelton Benjamin has won the WWE video game contest for the past three years straight, most recently defeating Kane in the finals at WrestleMania 21.

i loved WCW/NWO, i also really liked the royal rumble arcade game. you could either play a royal rumble or work yr way up the tag leagues. The royal rumble aspect wasn't up to much but the tag leagues were great especially all the cut scenes with the Legion of Doom talking about how they'd kick yr ass if you finally managed to get to them. I bought a wrestling simulator called extreme warfare revenge once where yr the head booker and run the promotion. it's vaguely similar to a football manager style game but where you pick the endings.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 22 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

It was actually the sequel i bought, Total Extreme Wrestling.

TEW 2005 is out at the start of next month, great game, but really does take it out on the processor. However, yet another campaign to turn a profit with FWA awaits when it comes out.

I always hearted Royal Rumble on the Mega Drive, it just had a weird... playability about it, especially in the rumble matches. The WWF arcade machine as well is possibly the best arcade machine ever.

TEW 2005 is now out, anyway. Get the demo at www.greydogsoftware.com

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 October 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

This Fire Pro thing looks pretty good. King of Colosseum's pretty much the best wrestling game I've ever played but sometimes you feel a bit adrift in a sea of confusing Japanese.

F (Ferg), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

The Fire Pro series (along with King of Colosseum) is basically THE reason I got my PS2 modded for imports. Fire Pro R is definitely worth it not only for the engine (which takes getting used to but quickly becomes second nature) but for the fact that you get 500 edit slots. Which means that not only do you have the current Japanese wrestling rosters from all major federations, a handful of indies and a whole ton of legends (including gaijin like Vader), but you can create the entire rosters of WWE, WCW, ECW past and present, throw in ROH and NWA-TNA, and have plenty of room left over for ridiculous fictional wrestlers who can do shooting star presses AND double-powerbomb-into-death valley driver power moves. Not bad for something that looks like an SNES game.

For not getting one's ass beat, or for creating Hamburglars?

four weeks pass...
Is TEW worth $35 if i already have the last one? I am seriously considering it.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

It will cost me in the neighborhood of $125 to get my PS2 modded and buy the FPR game cart. I am sure it would be worth it if I could get that kind of scratch together. Of course, when the next translation patch (which should translate the edit menus into English OMG OMG OMG) comes out I will sell any fluid people will pay to get out of me to jump on that game. I mean god DAMN.

In other news, the new WWF game came out today and has been the recipient of INSANE blowjobbery from the gaming press. I'm not normally one for WWF games but this one sounded too good to pass up. Back later with details.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

To me, TEW is worth $35 because I've not got as involved in a stratergy game as much since Football Manager. My tip is to buy it and play through the fake data (which is a lot of fun), but hang around on the Grey Dog forums in the mods section and wait for the Death of the Territories data to be released (ultra realstic and detailed data from circa 1983, just before Hogan won the WWF title and killed off the old rasslin circuits).

But, yeah, buy it. I've got a real data pack (the Ravex one) and am having a run with New Japan at the moment. Inoki is as much of a prick as he is in real life.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

New wrestling game, if it = smackdown vs raw, is really good. You can actually book the federations and put unlocked superstars and created superstars inside them, i haven't played it enough to know if it's actually any good, the management side that is, but it's at least a very good idea. Season mode is much the same as always. The wrestling system is marginally better than the older ones and they've added a stamina bar. I never know how to feel about smackdown but i think i really like it.

TEW: The fake federations always scare me because i worry about the amount of time and effort it'll take to familiarise myself with everything, the last one i just got the real (ravex again?) mod right away. I am definetely going to buy it but i'm unsure of which to play, i really am intrigued by fake universe and don't have many time constraints just now to learn all the stuff i'd need. I stopped watching WWE abt 3 or 4 years ago so having the actual roster seems a lot less important than ever, from what i've seen of new wwe people i dislike them a lot. Sometimes i like to just make my own little federation that is completely unknown but has an insane amount of cash and work my way from there. I may try that again this time. Downloading it right now.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

If you go to the cornellverse site on Greydog, there's some really cool "backstory" on the fake data, done in the style of old Apter mag reports. It's goofy, but there's some heroes in that data (biggest problem with it: wrestlers only wrestling in one or two territories. That can be a fucker).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

The GM mode in SvR2006 is basic but fun. They should buy the TEW engine and incorporate it next year as the basis of GM mode.

When you wrestle Muhammad Hassan in SvR, Daivari shouts random abuse at you in Farsi throughout the match.

I may also try to get hold of Fire Pro at some point soon, how does the patch work?

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Apparently you rip the FPD game to an iso, patch it, burn the patched ISO to a new DVD, and then play it like normal. The site is here:

http://www.pcotaku.com/postnuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=PostWrap&file=index&page=firepro

That being said, the new Smackdown game is looking like it'll actually hold me over for a fair bit of time, especially once edits of wrestlers I'd like to play as start hitting the net.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

i did the fire pro patching. I can't really remember how to do it but that's just because following the instructions on the forum was easy and all it took. Just make sure you have dvd decrypter, tho i think the forum s for the patch tell you all abt that too.

Smackdown is good. Too many games to play all at once.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 17 November 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

SLENDERBALLS

bingo (Chris V), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I picked up the new Smackdown game.. The graphics and models are excellent, but sadly I havent had time to mess with it much other than wrestle a couple matches in the season mode as shelton benjamin. Not alot of good mid carders to start with in the season mode.. At least on the RAW roster.

Also, the GM mode looked like a nightmare.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 24 November 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

it was a lot less good than i hoped, the GM mode.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 24 November 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Ok, who knows a good place to get Fi-Pro R imported to the UK 4 cheep?

There are many, many things that are wrong and annoying about SDvsR2006, but every now and then you can pull out a classic - having your GM Mode PPV Main Event Angle vs Benoit 30 minute Iron Match for the WWE Title go to 2-2 with 30 seconds left before an announce table bump leaves Angle counted out with seven seconds left is pretty great.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Death of the Territories for TEW is out.

That is all.

OMG Johnny Saint vs Jackie Pallo!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 24 November 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

How's the mod community for the new Smackdown game going now that you can trade CAWs directly online? My biggest problem with this game is that since I don't watch the WWE I could give a fuck less about %95 of these guys, but give me an American Dragon edit and I will play nothing else.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I've not got an online PS2 but I think it'll take a while to pick up, what with your average expert CAW maker being a phantom of the opera type who'll spend six months holed up putting the finishing touches to a 1990 Surfer Sting Edit.

There is that nice bridging wristlock that looks as though it could be half a Cattle Mutilation, at least.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Friday, 25 November 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns OTM

That mong guy that's shit, Thursday, 29 November 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I have forgotten how to have good matches in this

I suspect the key is playing on a difficulty about one level easier than you really need, and then letting the computer have some offense, but it takes some mental retraining not to be spamming the O button moves three minutes into the match

"wrestling would be better if 80% of the square and X moves in Fire Pro were banned"

MPx4A, Friday, 11 July 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

OK I am having good matches on this now that I have the WCW 1998 pack, including Dean Malenko kicking out of mah Benoit dragon suplex, escaping the crossface three times, kicking out of a top rope tombstone at 2.9 and then reversing the second tombstone attempt to a top rope sunset flip for the pin, bah gawd

Sometimes I like to put the difficulty on 1 and have an old-school jobber match, complete with general toying around with Lizmark Jr/Alex Wright/Hector Garza and a gratuitously painful looking finish, during which I like to imagine Tony Schiavone saying "he's not gonna get up" in a tone pitched somewhere between wistfulness and disgust

Unfortunately, during an earlier attempt I failed to drop a chair in time for the requisite five count, which resulted in Norman Smiley winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Hulk Hogan

MPx4A, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

anyone here ever played Toukon Retsuden, i.e. New Japan Pro Wrestling III? it's one of the best games i've ever played. the flow of the matches just feels so right. it seems like there's always a dramatic reversal at the end. one interesting thing about it is that once your opponent really starts wobbling, all the moves suddenly change to even more intense moves.

another thing i like about NJPW - NO ENERGY METERS. they just suck all the drama out of it don't you think?

has anybody played both Fire Pro and NJPW? i would love to splash out on a great wrestling game.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 July 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

not quite sure how this works but apparently you can download toukon retsuden here -

i guess this is for some sort of emulator program.

MPx4A, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

well, 2006 was quite good

lots of awesome youtube footage of TR3, here's a quick taste:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfUW43_nXVI

no big momentum reverses here (and i seem to remember some cool TV closeups which this is lacking) but you get a feel for it

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

Enh, from that it doesn't seem like it's better than Fire Pro, King of Colosseum or WCW Revenge, but maybe it's just too short a video

MPx4A, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

some good rope stuff here, and a very good ending - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDqfy8z_UeM

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

i guess it sucks just to watch this stuff.

that's it, i am getting this fire pro wrestling game. i don't actually watch wrestling so i m jsut going to invet my own tv show's worth of dudes. the CAW mode just looks mental.
