Hahah yesss! That always used to crack me up laughing, for some reason.

Another fave of mine: one of the "tv station" gobbledegooks from the Sims 1, which is this guy doing a tuff action movie sort of ramble that ends in something that sounds like "cubbidahhhh" (meant to sound like "coming sooon!" I guess).

There are tons of classic SFIITurbo sounds...E. Honda's laugh along with the crowd going "oooooooh!" after he wins being one. The little tune that plays in Dr. Mario when you clear two at once and you're about to drop some random pillz on your opponent's side (or vice versa)

ARAGORN SON OF ARATHORN (Z S), Saturday, 25 July 2009 00:24 (fourteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Seconded:

everything in yar's revenge
'mein Leben'
the sound that plays when Link ohsodramatically displays the goods he's pillaged from a treasure chest
"Reticulating Splines"
Impossible Mission generally (the incredibly long falling-to-your-death scream just over "stay forever!")

Would add:

DOOM: exploding barrel, roaring minotaur, general background gurgles and moans
Zelda II: Ganon's "AW AW AW AW AW" from the Game Over screen, also all the kind of weird ringing sounds made by swords hitting armor and stuff
Mario 64: "Yah! Yahooey! YIPPEEEE!," also the running-feet sound
Donkey Kong: Mario jumping over a barrel
Ultimate Wizard for C64: long painful death sound
Demon Attack: pew-pew-pew-pew of those guys who slobber laser beams down on you
Duck Hunt: dog laugh
all early digitized speech, esp. Cave Of The Word Wizard ("SPELL... CAGHGH!")

Also, turn-of-the-90s digitzed speech, when it sounded more realistic but still took up so much disk space that any given game would have maybe eight lines, which would acquire special, mystical power: "GET SCORPIO" from Countdown, the Guardian's periodic bellowing in Ultima VII* and the insults and chatter from Wing Commander II ("I will feast on your entrails!")

* - also, the Great Earth Serpent's impenetrable clues from Ultima VII Part Two: "SEEK THE HORN! THE GWANI HORN!"

Speech became really diluted by the time of, say, King's Quest VI, but I still treasure the shopkeeper's "HELLOOOO, PRINCE ALEX!" and a lot of stuff from Return To Zork, which I think I've posted about on here somewhere before. (search: "I need a new battery!", also the instant classic "Want some rye? COURSE ya do!")

Was thinking the other night about how great the Yoshi sound effect is, and how impossible it is to even sort of do an impression of it since it combines this sort of melodic whooshy sound with a percussive SNES pssh-thump sound.

This past week I played through Halo 3 on a whim and it was a lot of fun blowing shit up, some real thrills, but there was nothing quite like that moment and in general the monster/gun design seemed kinda blah.
