allegedly the last one? perhaps a good thing considering the general downhill nature of the stories/puzzles. byt still a sucker for the atmos and visual design of these games, so i'm there no matter what.

I'd quite like to get this, although I haven't played any of them sinve Riven. Are there any others in the series that would be in bargain bins I should check out before this one's released?

(or before I play this one, I should say)

the 3rd one had some pretty good stuff in it. one "large scale" puzzle particularly sticks in my mind for having a tremendously satisfying resolution. the 4th one was a bit meh, but very good visually. some obscure puzzles, but with a lot of echoes to myst (esp with the brothers). the only terrible thing about 4 is that you HAVE to sit through an excruciating Peter Gabriel song and video to finish the game. no really

I only played the first one--there are images from that game that still stick with me. The rocket, the swampy/giant-tree world, that stupid roulette puzzle. Is the big compilation thing worth $20? I wouldn't mind some nice chill puzzles.

if there is a compilation of 1 to 4 for 20 dollars, then definitely yes, as riven would be worth it alone.

this review makes V sound pretty rub :-( oh no, all characters in V are CG and not motion-video :-( oh no FPS mode.

Well, it's 1 to 3. It's also Mac-compatible which means I may just buy it out of principle.

adam (adam), Monday, 19 September 2005 10:48 (eighteen years ago) link

IMHO, that's def worth it for riven and myst 3, with the original as a bonus i suppose.

It's also fairly definite that V is the last one, as they fired everyone who worked on it after it came out.

yeah, Cyan is no more. Going from the highest selling game of all time to closure within 12 years.

Well, for the first time ever, I completed a Myst game without using hints or cheats. Playing End of Ages made me realize that I love Myst games until I'm about 75% completed with them; after that, I just get so fucking aggravated with the repetitious trial-and-error activities I need to do in order to solve puzzles that I always break down and look for cheat sites. This time, no, which I guess you can interpret as a thumbs-up.

I think the bit in Riven with the colored pegs on a grid drove me so nuts i cheated for the rest of the game. There's a dividing line between appropriate difficulty and games being pointlessly bitchy.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

THAT'S THE BEST BIT! the coloured pegs puzzle was totally central to the entire game. plus when you've done it that's about 90% of the game innit? so long ago now

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I totally spazzed out on the colored-peg puzzle and cheated BECAUSE I DIDN'T EVEN THINK TO PRESS THE BUTTON. How retarded is that?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:13 (eighteen years ago) link

There are a couple of puzzles on End of Ages that may be redolent of the beyotch. I don't even really know how I solved Todelmer!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

but i'm not doing some bullshit puzzle that forces me to click 40 times to get from one world to the other end of another to check one feature, go all the way back, and then still get it wrong.

I played through most of Obduction last year. Serious engine issues (frequent pauses, framerate issues) but it is definitely from the same creators of Myst and Riven -- you will probably wander around the first world wondering what to do for a considerable length of time. I got lost in one of the later sections and put it aside.

I don't feel the need to play Myst again. This is the fourth or fifth major version of the game I think -- original, myst masterpiece edition with better colors and not much else, realmyst in 2000, realmyst masterpiece edition in 2014. If they do a Riven remake I'll be all over it. That's a game in my top 10 of all-time list.
