i always considered the sequel games to be spinoffs rather than mainline, but then again the numbered final fantasies haven't really meant anything since 11
i'm playing and enjoying this one but i think i prefer the battle system of FF7R. something feels a bit missing without gearing up and controlling party members. either way, i'm glad to have both evolutions of modern-FF happening
also interesting that t1m r0g3r5's argument in his FF7R review that square has been trying to turn FF into gears of war has kinda turned out to be true

My friend is playing this and it looks amazing. I think the GOW-style combat is the one thing putting me off as I found Ragnarok's "Walk along, surprise encounter, hammer R1 (or spice it up a bit with R2 occasionally) until the baddies are dead" style of fighting kind of tedious. It looks fantastic and I'm loving the voice acting too, so hopefully the story works well

this game is very boring! i played a whole bunch of it in the hopes that it would suddenly open up a la ff13 (or even 7) but nope, corridors all the way down. the chocobo mounting and dismounting animations are hilariously long, like summoning bahamut in ff8 or something.

$20 seems reasonable--there are occasional fun moments in the panzer dragoon/eva-angel type summon fights ("eikons").

I am very interested generally speaking in GRAPHICS while also enjoying the franchise, so even if it’s not a great game I know I’d get something out of it. Will probably wait for its first sale and go from there

I’m such a sucker I bought it as soon as it was 25% off lol. Very pretty so far. It is 100% a final fantasy game in the sense that 99% of its substance comes from its insane amount of polish (thus leaving the other 1% to do a hell of a lot of lifting).
