hmm I guess I'm stuck. just won a 2-1 squeaker. if I keep winning everything guess I'll need to start over on hard.

it chafes my goolies that player cards don't indicate rightie or lefty!! fuck

also that I can't check a baserunner's speed rating

any opinions on which coaches or cheerleaders are worthwhile? no idea what the diff is between "card +3%" and "stat +3%" tbh

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 November 2010 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

you can check a baserunner's speed rating, it's on the card

I use the batting cards, bat CON and bat EYE, think bat EYE increases your chances of getting hits? dunno

dayo, Friday, 5 November 2010 14:28 (thirteen years ago) link

once the dude's on base his card isn't available though

pretty sure CON is likelihood of contact and EYE is likelihood of extra-base hit

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 5 November 2010 14:31 (thirteen years ago) link

could also stand for CONCENTRATION...or CONTINENT...or CONNOR...

dayo, Friday, 5 November 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

where is the setting for normal/hard ? am into my 2011 season and my roster is p stacked, 11-2 so far but 3 of those are either walk-off or extra inning wins. is hard considerably harder?

johnny crunch, Friday, 5 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

The setting for normal/hard only appears when you're first setting up your league season.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 11:43 (thirteen years ago) link

hate hate HATE that you can't tell if someone's a rightie or leftie by looking at their card

still haven't thrown anyone out

after a storming start to my season (18-4) the pendulum is starting to move the other way - toronto has handed me my ass in back to back games. i got c.c. sabs somehow but he lasted two innings.

Tracer, do you think you're overstating the importance of LH/RH batters vs. RH/LH pitchers? Cuz if you pay attn to the player "attributes", you'll see some LH that are "lefty killers" and vice versa and of course the natural reverse which is intuitive (esp for you!). I think the game really doesn't dole out the advantage the way it occurs in real life. I've hit some of my longest, clutchiest, Jeterrific homeruns with LH batter facing LHP and vice versa, so much that I stopped even paying attn to it.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 12 November 2010 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

haha yeah i guess i shouldn't give a shit about that! especially when i'm able to play pedroia at 1B with no loss of fielding stats

the game is definitely catching up with me. getting some tough games these days. submarine relievers are killin me.

for some reason i always find myself playing the orioles. the phrase "suggest ban matt wieters" comes to mind frequently.

has anyone figured out a good way to double switch btw?

"different stats for cheerleader cards even though they are the same" - that's a pro tip (??)

not at all, i don't have the patience for that! i love the easy cartoon style of 9innings. still wanna double switch though.

ILX, long time no talk. you ruined my life by introducing this addictive nonsense to me.

my batting & pitching:

AND A QUESTION... I got this card at some point, my team is Toronto btw (not that you can tell from that lineup) and I got this... Aaron Hill card? The stats are nearly identical to my original, position's the same, and yet it says he plays for the Cubs and the picture is someone else. Who is the picture? WTF is going on?

first season teixeira i got like halfway thru and he still dominated the HR charts, like 61 total? 10 ahead of the next guy. awesome. wolf has been way more dominant than his stats might make you think on account of being a lefty and a right-killer. haven't used kershaw yet, got him during the world series and he was on the rest-day in rotation for the first run of the second season (i am only 5 games into season 2). does the game get way harder when you hit season 2, btw?!

nah it's not harder in season 2 (tho mine is still on easy -- if they let u upgrade btwn seasons go for it, i cant recall if it did or not)

johnny crunch, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

also WOW & TEX's 117 power. never seen that card

johnny crunch, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:11 (thirteen years ago) link

^that should be wow @

how u have so many dope platinums my best 1 is like mike cameron

johnny crunch, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:22 (thirteen years ago) link

o i guess ur already in seas 2

im like ~ 45-12-1 seas 2

johnny crunch, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:23 (thirteen years ago) link

good cards from: 1. luck 2. paid money like an asshole 3. my coach is an upgraded +card% (right now at +9%). I think most of my plats are from homeruns and shit like that. Also gaming for points over stats ie. robbing myself saves to let a starter finish a game, etc. Also last season I had a million blowout games. Should mention that I have a cheerleader w/ +5 bat CON which is why everyone's CON is like 999999999

the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of ilx posters (Will M.), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:02 (thirteen years ago) link

in fact except for grienke i think i got every plat there in-game, never ever get anything good from combine, or draw

the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of ilx posters (Will M.), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I never do anymore. Seriously, I draw a gold card and it's like 30 points in various categories below my current guys.

Jeff, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

exactly, the good thing is that this season i'll basically not change a single player.

people should go into the player rank and make the second field ILX or something, so we can compare "scores" whatever the f they mean!

the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of ilx posters (Will M.), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

err, why it's good i am not changing players: top of all of the player ranks. last year i only had one guy in top ten Ks because almost my whole pitching squad had a half-year of catchup to play. did we ever figure out how to use EXP?

the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of ilx posters (Will M.), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i have no idea.. i guess i assume that EXP bumps up your stats?

anybody ever figure out how many inning skips it takes to reduce your EXP for that game?

the other day i pinch-ran for my starting pitcher, and in the bottom half of the inning.. there he was on the mound! huh? maybe that's some kind of s. korean rule?

i think howie kendrick has to have the best player photo (although i am partial to josh beckett's come-hither, kenny powers-esque pose)

I think that's just a bug (pinch hitting for the pitcher and having him return)

one of the "pro tips" that stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it: "difficulty of first 20 games has been adjusted"

that makes a lotta sense to me - i rocketed to the top of the league but the games are much harder now. i also just recently played my first NIGHT game.. ooh!

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 November 2010 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i have to say the difficulty curve is very very well done - as you get better, the opposition does too

btw Will M. the real way to rack up points is the real man's way - by playing Homerun Mode for like three hours straight til you can't see

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 2 December 2010 10:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I will try this Tracer! So much HR mode!

Also, Matt Cain gold card is consistently throwing fastballs north of 110MPH. INSANE

the depressed-saggy-japanese-salaryman of ilx posters (Will M.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

HR mode SO ADDICTIVE

finally realized that the timeout menu lets you see the speed of your baserunners, i.e. "Dash - D" or "Dash - B"

The computer is getting crazy good now (around middle of the season I guess.. sky has turned dark orange).. hardly ever swings at anything outside the zone and punishes me if I throw in the zone and don't get my pitching circle down to the minimum

Am I right in thinking that pitcher POW is becoming the most relevant stat?

Better luck next time ...

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i liked HR mode so much i bought Homerun Battle 3D and... i don't really get it

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

idg HR mode - how can I use some of my power hitters? jimmy rollins loses and then it's game over

yeah the latest update seems to mean that the games are getting harder. but it still seems I win pretty easily, and yes I do have a POW +4 coach card or something like that.

steendriver DUMB BIG, his HOOS got HOOS (dayo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link

you can't. you have to use your lineup in order. i've gotten to the 5th guy in the order once, i think. usually i puke out on #3. the pitchers get nastier too, throwing out of the zone sometimes..

i reallllly don't get the diff between coaches who are "card +5" and coaches who are "points +5"

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean HR Mode is totally idiotic - i feel like a pavlovian dog or something - but after a tense game it feels so sweet to just bash em out of the park

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

points + 5 means you earn 5% more points for all your achievements, I think

kinda worthless

I really hate how when you fail at a levelup, it takes away one level from the max level of a guy.

steendriver DUMB BIG, his HOOS got HOOS (dayo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i still have no idea why a platinum card is any better than a normal one. i see the same number of little level lozenges at the bottom. and normal cards are a hell of a lot cheaper to level up.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I've started just skipping all pitching innings. Just got too bored with it.

I've enjoyed homerun battle 3d. Although I always get me ass kicked in multiplayer.

Jeff, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Jeff I will admit to skipping most pitching innings as well but I often regret it - I'm a better pitcher than the computer. I never walk guys, for instance.

Something that has been infuriating me is that I can't count on doing a hit-and-run - even if the ball is right over the plate, the game often won't "let" me swing at it.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 10:16 (thirteen years ago) link

got handed my first ass whooping after 20 or so games of easy wins, by the 1st ranked la nats (aka dodgers)

the game is doing that thing where they are even hitting pitches way outside of the box into the gaps, and then during my at bats I always fly out to shallow center

fucking computer

steendriver DUMB BIG, his HOOS got HOOS (dayo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link

me too; 11-1 at the hands of the rays

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i reallllly don't get the diff between coaches who are "card +5" and coaches who are "points +5"
Points +5: each achievement gives you an additional 5% more points. Not really worth it.
Card +5: A +5% chance to get a card on any achievement. I don't nkwo if it actually works but I have a leveled-up Card+9 coach on alllll the time and I get a LOT of cards. I like it like that.

i still have no idea why a platinum card is any better than a normal one. i see the same number of little level lozenges at the bottom. and normal cards are a hell of a lot cheaper to level up.
They usually start with higher stats, and have 3 special abilities incl. one super-special ability (eg. slugger, prophet, etc). I have had some green cards better thna gold of the same player though, and red better than green, etc. It seems like it randomizes A) what stats it makes better and B) what powers the players get.

got handed my first ass whooping after 20 or so games of easy wins, by the 1st ranked la nats (aka dodgers)
As you get better players this happens less, I sucked from games 21-50 or 60 or so, then my team started to be awesome.

one month passes...

further:

- the difference in style between difft pitchers is terrific. some curveballs loop slowly in, others snap tightly.

- the stealing mechanic should actually work; as it is, it's just chance

- defensive substitutions, please!

- stamina depletion of opposing relievers, please! it's not fair that my guys' tiredness lasts through to the next game, but their guys magically "heal" overnight. it takes away one of the great strategic satisfactions of baseball: wearing down the relief corps so that the next day your opponent's no. 5 starter gets left in the game too long

- it is a bit too easy. i'm now into the next season (2011) and i didn't get a chance to switch it up to "hard"

- i love how in the world series everyone seems to play a bit better
