Time to change the baking soda.

I always have one of those fridge deoderiser things sitting at the back. It got rid of the foul smell of pickles which was there when I inherited it, which is pretty good going. But I keep my butter in a glass dish with a cover on the side because it's cool enough, so it doesn't taste of anything but good, wholesome FAT (north-facing kitchens have their uses, even if herbs don't flourish).

i need to get one of these baking soda boxes. living with boys = sometimes random smells in fridge (even though usually all we have is condiments and beer). my microwave also often smells of bacon - while this can be a treat at times, when you are heating a mug of water for a quick cup of tea, bacon water is not so great. how do you get set-in meat flavor out of microwave?

mmmm bacon water

it not just my refrigerator. sometimes at restaurants. sometimes at people's houses. i can taste it.

like i would never put the butter in a tray. it must be kept wrapped up in its paper always. even if left partially unwrapped it is useless to me.

tehresa, you can try nuking a bowl of white vinegar for a minute or two in there. It will make your house smell of vinegar for a few minutes, but it's supposed to work to clear odors.

We're gonna be moving soon anyway, but this thread got me to disassemble and clean out the completely manky produce drawers in the bottom of our fridge yesterday. Our butter sits out in a glass dish, but the milk was starting to pick up some blech odors. jhøshea, maybe you're a supertaster.

Jaq, Monday, 20 August 2007 13:44 (sixteen years ago) link

isnt supertasting supposed to make a lot of things unpalatable? cause i like to eat pretty much everything.

Problem foods

As a whole, supertasters are less likely to enjoy and thus consume certain foods, although individual supertasters can certainly enjoy and consume these foods. Documented examples for either lessened preference or consumption include:

* alcoholic beverages[10]
* Brassica oleracea cultivars
o Brussels sprouts[12][13][14]
o cabbage[12]
o kale[14]
* coffee[12]
* grapefruit juice[13]
* green tea[13]
* spinach[12]
* soy products[13]

Other foods may also show altered patterns of preference and consumption, but only indirect evidence exists:

* chili peppers - capsaicin burn is more intense in supertasters
* tonic water - quinine is more bitter to supertasters
* olives - for a given concentration, salt is more intense in supertasters

although i did taste the phenylthiocarbamide paper once

jhøshea, Monday, 20 August 2007 13:57 (sixteen years ago) link

propylthiouracil , rather.

I'm one of those people who can't taste anything sweet in saccharin - it's just nasty bitter bitterness - is that the same as that paper test stuff?

Jaq, Monday, 20 August 2007 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe u r a supertaster

jhøshea, Monday, 20 August 2007 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

it would be nice to have a super power of some kind, but i was hoping for massive strength or channeling lightning or something

Jaq, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, I can't smell when various dairy products have gone bad. Instead of supertaster, I am probably just wired funny.

Nuking 50/50 water and vinegar works for me...it's also good for loosening stuff spattered inside the microwave, if you nuke it a good long time and let it get steamy in there. Not that I'd EVER leave spatters inside a microwave for a few days before I cleaned it out, noooooo.
