http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombucha

Kombucha the baddest tea ever!!!!is the Western name for sweetened tea or tisane that has been fermented by a macroscopic solid mass of microorganisms called a "kombucha colony," usually consisting principally of Bacterium xylinum and yeast cultures.

i was thinking about kombucha yesterday
they are weird. do you have one in a giant vat??

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

what is this tea about? i grabbed one at the peruvian bodega and was astonished it was $4.50. I put it back and the dude was like "why did you pick it up if you had no clue how much it was?" i was like "because everything else in there is $1-2." he got mad I didn't buy it because they sell it down the street for $5.00 and i said i didn't need to be healthy that badly.

Yerac, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

i bought one, but couldn't handle the taste. i'll get my fermentation from kimchee.

ps - c, i saw dr. k this morning.

i am addicted to this. my gf makes tons of it.

artdamages, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i would consume only food that was fermented if it was practical. i made my own kimchi last year. THAT IS NOISE PEOPLE.

my Kombucha died :(

it'd been brewing stronger & stronger for 8 months, then in december one brew came out weaker, and the next one after that, the culture was no longer floating on the surface, sinking dying

so I called the friends I'd given my Kombucha babies out to, to see if I could get one in return, and all three of them had the same story. none of us keep our kitchens heated and it's been a very very cold winter, is the theory, but now we are without our cultures

It's not hard to make.If you don't think the health benefits are worth $4/tiny bottle (they aren't) you can make it and check the potential benefits for free. I have plenty of mothers to give away but I make mine in gallon jars so the girls have a large surface area. Takes a while to get the hang of it-vinegary home kombucha is dud. I'm still alive 2.5 years after doc expected me to croak so kombucha and NN diet get a big a+ from me. Also weed. Also neti. 3/3 for this board apparently.

speaking of wings i am late to the party but my hungover self bought some overpriced organic chicken wings and assorted marbled cheeses at whole foods this morning JUST TO GET A $3 GINGERADE. of course i am late to the party (do keep up) so i was cursing at the pee water coco vita replacement. the hirsute cashier informed me that the FDA has banned all kombucha sales because they weren't able to control alcohol levels in it.

i'm relieved to see Synergy's business model isn't completely dead in the water, but i'm not paying $7 at a bodega.
