Peter Chanel was born in the the village of Cuet insouthern France on July 12th 1803, the fifth child of a family of eight. He was ordained a priest in 1827 and in 1831 joined the order of the Marist Fathers. In 1836 he and six other Marists left France for the Missions of the south-west Pacific (Oceania). The voyage was long and dangerous. On arrival in the south-west Pacific Fr. Peter and his companion, 20 year old Br. Marie Nizier, worked on a small island called Futuna.
This small island had a population of about 1000 natives who not long before the arrival of Fr. Peter had been cannibals. The two missionaries were completely cut off from the outside world. They set about building a shelter, growing food and learning the language of the natives.
Though progress of bringing the message of the Good News of Christ to the inhabitants of Futuna was heartbreakingly slow, the natives came to see in Fr. Peter a man of great selflessness and love. They gave him the name "the man with the great heart".
Unfortunately the king turned against Fr. Peter. At first he tried to starve the two missionaries out, but when this failed he ordered that they be killed. Early in the morning of April 28th, 1841 Fr. Peter was killed by a Futunian warrior.
Only after his death did the true value of Peter Chanel's work appear. Within two years the Marist Fathers were again working on Futuna and in a short time the whole island became followers of Christ.
