is there a new york hotels thread? where would ppl recommend in manhattan? friend mentioned the gershwin. everywhere p.expensive

Um friend just stayed at somewhere on 35th St? But it was like $225 a night which, yikes. There have to be better options than that.

Friends stayed last June at the Hotel Pennsylvania near MSG, which I would've thought was a fleabag, but they survived.

Anything under $200/n in Manhattan is miraculous, no?

gershwin is about as cheap as it gets in manhattan; i've placed artists there before
best bet is to always couch crash if you know anyone

Asking two days beforehand if anyone is around on a Friday during the Christmas season is probably pretty dumb, huh? Anyway, I go to NYC this weekend.

Friday and Sat nights. Could probably meet up either night but Friday would be the better bet as I'm not sure what time we'll be done with RS work dinner on Sat which is the whole reason we'll be down. Was actually gonna msg you on FB to see if you were around, D. Will do so later tonight. :)

i don't understand income tax. about what fraction of my gross will i take home?

is there a website that is not craigslist for apartments?

if youre just talking about federal, then I would guess like 15-25% will be taxed unless scientists make 6 figures

but then there's also state + local tax, like the nyc city tax, payroll tax

so maybe bank on about 60% takehome?

that rule of thumb about rent being no more than 1/3 of your salary. is that net or gross? and is it realistic in nyc?

i would guess net, and it's v realistic if youre willing to put up with roommates, esp cl weirdoes

it depends on what kinda a place you want and whether you'd live w/ roommates

i think tiny studios/1brs are gonna start around 2k in manhattan. if you go through a broker it'll be a bit easier but you'll have to pay a fee (uze 15% of the yearly rental cost of the apt)
