wild boars like in LOST? or LORD OF THE FLIES?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 13 October 2008 02:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a technical question for Dan/John/other lurking mod types. When I load a long thread - for example, the current gen. election thread - I get huge gray boxes obliterating lots of the text. It doesn't seem to happen on shorter threads. What the hell is that about? I can't stay at my house constantly to read everything and in some cases I hate missing stuff.

I have no idea; other people have complained about it as well. I'm guessing someone posted videos that can't be embedded or something similar.

also a big FUCK YOU to middle-of-the-night heartburn/acid reflux that wakes you up at 4:30 AM and keeps you awake

I have a mtg at 10 I'm dreading. There's a "colleague" here who has taken a dislike to me and everything we try to work on together turns into a clusterf*ck. Although she's higher up on the food chain than me I don't report to her (or fall under her at all) yet she's always pulling a rank card. annoying. I know it's because one, she's very young, two, just started in her position a week before mine, and three not very confident of herself in her position. I try to tell myself that hostility is a weakness and I shouldn't rise to hers. But still. . .I prefer work to be of the non-stomachache inducing variety.

ugh that sounds really obnoxious :( sorry you have to deal with her.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

just compliment her a couple of times and she'll like you fine xp

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought of trying to ask her to lunch and be friendly, etc. Then I thought, no, I don't really want to be her friend. She's six or seven years younger than me, a sorority-type chick, and a little self-important now that she has an office with a window.

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

oh god not lunch. just tell her her skirt is cute or something

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah sunny's totally otm here. there's an uppity little 22yr old who does all the rosters at my job. she used to be fulltime, hence she thinks she's still a 'manager' but is now back in school. she's doing gender studies, and is the most stereotypical of those type of students: her favourite word is 'communication' and she spent last year 'finding herself' blah blah. anyway, she's a total dick and patronising and a bunch of other annoying stuff. but i was listening to portishead when she came in the other day, and she got all excited because 'you know, i just think that portishead totally crosses all musical boundaries, and really reaches out to anyone who truly loves music'. so i gritted my teeth and put a little effort into bonding with her, since i need her to okay me taking 6 days off over thanksgiving weekend to go back to chicago.

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Monday, 13 October 2008 15:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Portishead is probably the best way to solve every problem. However, WOW you guys have annoying co-workers. I want to slap them and all I've done is imagine them a bit based on your descriptions!

xp Dan - thx for confirming that I'm not imagining the boxes at least. ;) As for the acid reflux, ugh. I hope that isn't common for you, because that would suck. I'm totally resisting giving you the helpful advice from my textbook that seems to apply to every upper GI complaint.

Sara R-C, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i am in some serious fucking pain from that hike yesterday.

i need her to okay me taking 6 days off

okay this would drive me up the wall. I have to be careful though b/c I can be really aggressive and bitchy if pushed. I have to keep reminding myself that this one's not worth it. Especially since my guy could likely lose his job soon.

Sore muscles are good. Gettin' some work in!

How is school?

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Monday, 13 October 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

sara, your skills would have been useful for me last night when i was trying to help out the kid at the show with GAPING HEAD WOUND from the pit. i am not sure that you would have enjoyed belphegor or ensiferum all that much, although they were in fact AWESOME. Amon Amarth was kind of meh, and The Abcense was ok.

I don't know, but I think it is a tragedy that the only thing that I understand from John's post is the phrase "GAPING HEAD WOUND."

Dogs dogs dogs.

I have been plagued by combinations of being weirdly busy and not busy at all. I wish I knew what this means.

These pictures of dogs are so cute that they HURT!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Short lifespan sounds kind of not so bad, and obviously I know you've lost pets before, but wow it was so hard when we had to have Cutty Sark put to sleep last spring. I thought it would be fine and then I sobbed idiotically through the entire experience. So if it were me, I'd be keeping that in mind (and probably going, whoa, I shouldn't have pets... or children... or friends...).

Freddie Mac - 2000-05-18
Greyhound Mix-Neutered Male
50 lbs

Freddie is 8 years old, young at heart, still looking for love and dreams of a forever home. He's a very handsome tan and white greyhound mix. He's so sweet, still likes to play and is content to wait patiently while you're gone, for your return. He is good with children but prefers to pick his own canine friends as some dogs intimidate him. Freddie dreams of morning walks, watching daytime TV and sleeping all through the night with anyone who will love him in return. Please give this gentle dog a chance to fulfill his dreams.

Attributes: Ready and waiting for a new family!

My personal memorable music history factoid is that we sang the huntsman chorus from that at Luther College on a senior year take-all-the-singers-to-area-schools-known-for-music trip (remember that, John? the random piece with big la-la-la-la-la-la section in the middle?).
