Guys, they ran out of gin so I had to mix gin with vodka, is this like playing bass through a guitar amp?

incidentally Christopher Blix Hammer went to london and got so drunk he bought this mother's ruin recipe to make in norway.

haha that reminds me of a college drinking story:

We were having a party senior year, so my roommates and I went out and bought a shit-ton of alcohol. One roommate bought himself a bottle of peach schnapps for later consumption that got intermingled with the booze for the party. When people began to show up, they went straight for the schnapps and started making themselves fuzzy navels. My roommate quickly discovered this and hid his schnapps before everyone could drink it.

Another friend of ours had volunteered to act as bartender but was running late, so he missed the whole schnapps controversy. By the time he got himself set up to mix drinks, the lights were dimmed and people were tipsily walking up to him asking for fuzzy navels. He looked around and saw no peach schnapps, so he grabbed a beer cup, filled it with ice, gin and vodka and said, "Here you go!"

The devastation was amazing. We had people huddled underneath the sink crying, people attempting to make out on the dance floor and MISSING, numerous pukers who managed to hold it in until about 10 feet after leaving our dorm room... Such good times.

more good news:

when the chapbook comes out, it's getting reviewed in Chiron, one of the top five small press mags in the country!

this thread has taught me that dan has never magically grown a vagina, but it is still possible that he has grown one through the use of science.

i'll post pics of the two editions once they're done.

the first edition of 50 (20 going to contributors) will be hand sewn into paper wraps (got this really nice textured grey green paper) with the title ('A Common Thread') letterpressed onto a piece of arches or rives (friend is doing this for us) and pasted down. in the back you'll find an envelope containing 20 scraps of weird/unusual/pretty paper which each have a poet's signature. there's and intro from me and jordan, and also one from the 'proprietor' of the bukowski forum (the poets are all members, this is the site where j-dawg and i met), he's one of the wittiest, sharpest dudes ever.

then there's a 'tuxedo' edition, which is limited to 5 copies: these are presentation copies for a small number of ppl who've been good to us. they're going to be in paper wraps made from really cool black textured paper, with fancy tissue endpapers.

and there you have it.

the type of poetry we're doing: not flowery stuff. more like raymond carver, narrative stuff, realist, blah blah etc etc.

This is all rather good, I particularly like your decriptions of the bindings, as a binder (probably ought to say former) I can appreciate the work that goes into hand binding a volume.

On the ground in london, overloaded, motionless in a tunnel, thanks to price buster, smiley culture, the communards and the sons of T.C. Lethbridge for getting me through the flight.

Christopher Blix Hammer (Ed), Friday, 26 September 2008 21:34 (fifteen years ago) link

well, it's just a chapbook, so it's not gonna be super fancy hand binding or anything, but i'm trying to figure out a way to sew multiple signatures. got a great book on it, but it's tricky stuff. there's a really good stab-binding technique, but it feels like it might be a bit hit and miss.

guys: my week is OVER!!! finally!!!!!!!!!!

i am annoyed at itunes store. 16 tracks = $19.99 but 1 track = 99ยข? they will not allow you to buy all 16 individually. select few are "album only" preventing you from circumventing their tricky little system to overcharge.

Well, that was 9 hours of my life I'll never get back... Best part of the day was watching the Foley catheter demonstration. I'm so going to be really unproductive tonight.

i am dogsitting and have an entire apartment to myself, which is a+.

In person shopping is not my favorite. I'm taking my SIL to the Mall of America next Friday to a store called "Tall Girl" because she's 6 feet tall and needs to find clothes that fit. I will feel very stupid in this store since I'm not so tall, but you know, anything for the cool family members.

Happy Sunday ITR. Envious of John and FB's fun night last night, BUT staying home and watching SNL was surprisingly fun. Followed by a solid 10 1/2 hours of sleep. Almost ready to go back to the constant cramming that this insane class requires.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 28 September 2008 16:49 (fifteen years ago) link

so i had to work all day yesterday, and was feeling pretty grim about it. jordan picked me up at the end of the day, and he'd bought me my favourite aussie gingerbeer, packed it into a container of ice, also bought me one of my favourite new zealish chocolate bars (cadbury flake, so delish), and then took me out for dinner. best boyfriend ever.

now he's off mountain-biking till this afternoon, so i think i'm just gonna stay in bed.

i had a lovely day consisting of: brunch, a broadway play (not musical), a walk to buy indulgent eye cream, sushi, and a manicure. so don't want to do hw now.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 00:31 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa - that sounds FANTASTIC! Wow. 10.5 hours of sleep was great, but remember that I'm probably not going to get much on Monday night since Tues. morning I need to get up at 4:30 a.m. in order to be at the hospital for a daytime clinical shift... so I'm trying to rest up now!

God I want sushi now. Instead: treadmill, then study study study. Why? ANOTHER QUIZ TOMORROW NIGHT, OF COURSE!

Sara R-C, Monday, 29 September 2008 01:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i am procrastinating on this homework. i did not get much sleep last night because a) some "unknown number" called at 3:15 and then around 4:15 there was some weird noise outside, and then by 8 the dog wanted to be walked. ah well, maybe the eye cream will help this.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 01:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i forgot to tell you guys (WARNING: MUSHY LOVEY DOVEY ALERT)

.....

while we were back in chicago, jordan's mum took him aside and showed him this antique ring (over 100yrs old) and told him he could give it to me when he's ready (she already has a DIL, so i'm stoked that she'd rather i have it). of course it was all supposed to be secret, but i asked jordan what the big mystery was as soon as he came back in the room and he told me right away (no secrets here, not even good ones!).

haha! well. i mean, moving here was pretty much like saying 'okay we're pretty committed' i.e. 'engaged'. jordan told me he wanted to give me a ring just before i go back to nz.

don't tell him i told you guys! he'd be so embarrassed!

I am horrendously tired and my body is in revolt from having drunk 4 martinis, a bottle or two of wine plus champagne and dessert wine yesterday. This comes on top of friday's 10 hour international free drinks session. I am all ruin.

That is an awesome story RR.
