Merry xmas peeps.

Xmas in Carmel = great as always. Whole family rolling in good gifts. In my case, this includes Criterion double-disc editions of M, The Third Man and Kurosawa's High and Low, the Jesus and Mary Chain rarities box set, Neil Stephenson's Anathem and a book on cocktails plus liquor. And bookplates and more.

So in essence yay me. And yay you all and if you have to escape evil relatives please to do so with vim and vigor. Merry Xmas I sez I sez.

i asked just1n3 if she wanted to get chinese food, and she said she'd rather have indian food. i told that's because she hates jews.

presents, I am up in shirts with insects on them
watch 'a christmas story' round the fire

My day was shockingly fantastic; I think my family has been visited by Jacob Marley's ghost or something. Everyone was jovial, my Dad said disturbingly nice things about Barack Obama (ending in, "but I still don't trust him...," of course), no one said anything insanely inappropriate, and I they gave us lots of presents and a shocking amount of Christmas money.

Also, I drank two glasses of champagne on a pretty much empty stomach before lunch and told inappropriate nursing-related stories to my Dad's brother, which he seemed to enjoy.

Next up: put kids in bed and eat more!

you guys are better than me: i stopped making any kind of effort to go to family xmases 10 years ago! i don't miss them and i'm certain they don't miss me.

I have kids, so getting out of it is pretty well impossible. Besides, presents for kids plus free booze and good food isn't tooooo much of a problem. It's just when the commentary gets out of hand and pisses me off that I hate it.

i agree and will admit that i'm totally lucky. i can't imagine the brain-searing rage i would feel if my parents thought that me being liberal, or vegan, or riding my bike instead of driving when possible was just some phase i would grow out of when i grew up. i have become more conservative as i've aged (meaning that i don't still think that all authority is necessarily evil or that any form of government is wrong on principle), but the weird thing is that i think my dad is more liberal now than he was 10 years ago. and my mom is a political space cadet, always has been.

Yeah, you kind of get over the brain-searing rage after a while, but it never ceases to be annoying/appalling. But whatever, they'd be bored if I wasn't around for sure. ;)

(this is like those conversations I have in sign language with my deaf acquaintance, isn't it? they seem to focus on "how are you" and responses and basic commentary on the weather...)

y'know i should stop bagging my family and say this: my parents are lower-working class highschool dropouts and conservative rural families, with no interest in art/literature/technology/culture/anything at all, i was raised to be extremely polite, hardworking, and not tolerant but respectful of other people's religion/ethnicity/sexuality. so there's that to be grateful for.

sister just got horribly bitchy during a game of cards and would not let us listen to music, just because she was losing. she is soooo weird. i kind of resent giving her the awesomest present of all, but i'm glad her husband will like it.

That's not so bad, really. What baffles me about my family is they really made a great effort to teach us to be polite and respectful, but then they are so NOT sometimes, if the culture isn't familiar to them. I don't get that!

when i met jordan's grandma on webcam thanksgiving '07 she was totally tripped out by the fact that i was down on the other side of the world, yet still able to talk to her.

there is something called 'bedtime stories' playing which is making me lol uncontrollably because that is the name of the strip club just across the sc border on i-85. except i think that is 'bedtyme stories' maybe?

there's that scene in "the day the earth stood still" when kathy bates asks keanu reeves why he came to "our planet," and he says "your planet?" in that weird keanu reeves voice... and you can keep saying "your ____ ?" at the screen every time a character says "my" or "our".

that also might be because she's 85 and doesn't understand fax machines, let alone webcams. seriously, i think picture phones and space rockets were like the main markers of strange futuristic times back in the 1930's.

if i went to see doubt, i would whisper about "DOUBTING this character is telling the truth" in justine's ear during EVERY SCENE. it would be so goddamn funny.
