mookieproof, Monday, 15 September 2008 03:53 (fifteen years ago) link

oh no i am contagious!!!!

i am scared to take melatonin tonight bc tomorrow is first day of newjob.

tehresa, Monday, 15 September 2008 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Not sleeping here, although reading about hypertension should be putting me out...

I hope your first day at your new job is awesome, tza. RR - Chicago sounds awesome! remy... I didn't know you were seeing anyone? You'll find someone better.

Sara R-C, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I have managed to ween myself of the melatonin post jetlag. So happy to be sleeping properly again.

Drinking Island is inside every one of us (Ed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Morning Ed. Morning everyone. I kept the tache, though the girl who thinks I hurt women says I should "thin it out". Any ideas how?

Mark C, Monday, 15 September 2008 10:15 (fifteen years ago) link

tweezers?

This sounds like a crazy suggestion and I don't think this girl should be trusted. You need to get it long enough so that it gets soft enough for smooching and as an optional extra, grow out the ends for waxing and twirling villainously.

Drinking Island is inside every one of us (Ed), Monday, 15 September 2008 10:26 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i am disinclined to trust this girl as well. i am also a wholehearted supporter of villainous 'tache twirling.

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 10:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Who is this chick who's so intrested in your facial hair. I only like the villainous types from afar.

Good luck, Tza!

Why do weekends depress me so?

Hated like a city cop (Susan), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:13 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks!

i am really hoping to not pass out mid-day after only 3 hours sleep. considering sacrificing homework tonight for some sleep aids and shut eye.

tehresa, Monday, 15 September 2008 13:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Try one of those five-hour energy shots. I'm curious to see how they work.

Argh, I need to use the restroom but there's a guy cleaning it.

I have three new student workers to schedule and give assignments to. But I'm trying to figure out how to give them each enough work to do yet still leave some for myself.

Hated like a city cop (Susan), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:29 (fifteen years ago) link

you should send them to link to ilx. that'll slow em down.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha! good idea.

Yeah they are really fast. Damn kids *shakes fist*. Part of my job is to ready them to be developers in the "real world" so I do need to hammer it in their heads that productivity must be a carefully measured out.

Friend jealousy - stupid or stupid?

One of my good friends has left the working stiff life (which is how we met) for full-time grad school. She is now super-busy which cuts into the friend time we have but she is also made a new friend at school.

I can't help but feel jealous and sad b/c this new girl is way cooler than me and also gets to spend more time with my friend than me. Also said friend is moving to LA when she's done so it feels like our friendship has a time limit now.

:(

Hated like a city cop (Susan), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Friend jealousy is probably silly, but I think also kind of normal. Having student workers is a huge pain if you don't have tons of excess work.

I continue to have no life. This weekend I will finally have a school-free weekend! CANNOT WAIT.

First day went ok! I have never felt so low level! But at least my menial tasks included transcribing some really cool interviews. And... I get to work opening night. :-)

That is... If I don't die of lack of sleep before then. Now to stay awake for class tonight...

i am back from chicago after an arduous plane ride. chicago style pizza gets a huge thumbs up from me.

also: jordan's whole family LOVES me ;)

I WILL FUCK U UP (Rubyredd), Monday, 15 September 2008 22:55 (fifteen years ago) link

good! and why wouldn't they

osi-dosi (jergins), Monday, 15 September 2008 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

you didn't tell them about your new username, did you?

osi-dosi (jergins), Monday, 15 September 2008 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i failed to mention that, although i kept getting the giggles every time jordan's mum said 'fuck' - she doesn't look like the kind of woman who would swear at all!

one of his aunties had trouble understanding my accent which was a little anxiety-inducing. the best part was watching jordan get all cooey and mushy over his brand new niece - esp because he's been so blase about the whole thing before now.

I WILL FUCK U UP (Rubyredd), Monday, 15 September 2008 23:04 (fifteen years ago) link

did you see much of the city? got any compare and contrast, sf vs chi, for us?

osi-dosi (jergins), Monday, 15 September 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

didn't see too much of the city - his family lives out in the 'burbs. went into the city on friday, to millenium park, caught the train there and back. went in again on sunday to boystown, to the chicago diner (best milkshakes ever) and to powell's (where i found 'skels' by maggie dubris in near-mint condition for a measly $5), but that was it. we intended to do more touristy stuff but northbrook is pretty far out of the city, it rained the whole time, and we mostly just lounged about with his family, reading and eating and watching football and playing with the baby.

chicago is v v v different: much cleaner, super flat (which i don't like, it's v claustrophobia-inducing), totally diff domestic architecture (but i liked it). the suburbs are just.... weird. these huge developments, where you look out and there's just acres and acres of identical houses, and huge shopping malls. i wish i'd taken pics of jordan's parents' neighbourhood - they live in a modest house, but the majority of the area is filled with these INCREDIBLY ostentatious houses. i was completely gobsmacked by it, since you don't really see that kind of thing in NZ (i had to explain 'tall poppy syndrome' to his family).

had to explain 'tall poppy syndrome' to his family

explain once more plz? :)

osi-dosi (jergins), Monday, 15 September 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

it's this really common thing in NZ:

we don't like anyone who sticks out or achieves higher than average; a 'tall poppy' is someone who towers over others, and who is cut down just like a tall poppy for that very reason. does that make sense?

your ass is (Rubyredd), Monday, 15 September 2008 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a completely opposite culture to the US, where ppl are more than happy to display their success.

tbh, i've never really seen FotC - i saw their comedy sketches years ago, when they were first geTting noticed here in NZ but not really since.

You guys I have two days without class in a row and I'm super excited about it. Although I have to take two quizzes and prep for Thursday's exam. Somehow just getting to be at home for two days in a row is now the most thrilling thing ever.
