hmmm, i've got two written references from a couple of my old restaurant customers, i guess i could use their email addresses/ph numbers.

oh, and i have this gorgeous reference that the dad wrote me: the restaurant i worked at was family-run, but when i started there it was the dad who ran things, with his wife and one son. now there are another three sons there, and they run everything. but years ago, when i 'moved' to sydney (for 10 days), dad wrote me this reference like you've never seen before. i wish i could post it here! it was full of bad english and ellipses, and didn't say really anything about my skills, jsut how much he loved me and would miss me and that he didn't want me to leave! so cute!

thanks guys! estela - i didn't think of that, i should probably give my print professor as a reference.

Rubyredd, Friday, 1 August 2008 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

give me as a reference

jergins, Friday, 1 August 2008 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

You guys all have such brilliant ideas (which would never occur to me...)!

I am totally crossing my fingers for you on this interview, RR.

Sara R-C, Friday, 1 August 2008 21:35 (fifteen years ago) link

jergins i am totally giving her your email address so you can be one of my 'personal' references.

when she asks what your relationship is to me:

'oh he's just some dude i know from the internetz who i've never met. but it's cool yo - i moved here to be with some internetz dude!!'

i'm sure she won't think i'm whack.

i just got a wrong-number phone call from Romania!

jergins, Friday, 1 August 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

That sounds weirdly enjoyable.

I had to call someone to register for a class today, and I swear I had a great time talking on the phone to this random woman. (How desperate am I for social interaction when I start to chit chat with receptionists?!)

Sara R-C, Friday, 1 August 2008 22:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i am c&p-ing that, printing it out and taking it to my interview tomorrow

Rubyredd, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

hai guys, from rhode island.

i am alone for the first time in the four days i have been here. i will make seven tiny dispatches:

1) am going to be an uncle. did i already say this on here? no? well, i am. yay.
2) my brother-in-law, dairo, is supercool. my spanish is a lot better on this trip, and his english is a lot better. now we talk about stuff. like i told him his sunglasses made him look gay, and he thought it was a compliment and went into work and said to everybody 'my sunglasses are gay, my brother in law says so"
3) my dad retired yesterday, but we decided not to throw him a party because he hates "fuss" and now he is upset we did not throw him a party.
3a) it is two million degrees, and my dad's first act of retirement is to ban the use of air conditioners for some cryptic reason nobody can understand. this is especially appreciated by my preggers sister.
4) i bought my mom a henckels santoku knife but she returned it cuz she thought it was weird. i am offended
5) my cousin has just gotten out of jail, and came to visit. he told me all sorts of fascinating things about prison, not the least interesting of which is how to make wine out of oranges, trash bags, and cherry kool-aid.
6) when my father was a prison chaplain, he had one of his parishoners die from drinking wine made from ketchup.
7) i went swimming today in the ocean, but almost got kicked off the beach for going out too far. the guard actually came in the water to yell at me -- and i realized she was the kid sister of a girl i dated over ten years ago, when I was a lifeguard and used to yell at her. this was all very humorous, etc., but i used my leverage to get permission to swim like 200 feet into the atlantic. then i go scared of sharks and came in.

remy bean, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

also i have suggested my sister name her baby either Fatty or Rhinocerous Rex, but she does not appreciate this at all, not one little bit.

remy bean, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:29 (fifteen years ago) link

hahah awww remy!!!!!!!!! you have just made my week with those posts!

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:37 (fifteen years ago) link

remy, you are having such an adventurous week! I'm glad no sharks got you. And congratulations on the impending uncle-ness!

Try to stay cool (btw, no a.c. while pregnant = horrible horrible BAD BAD BAD) and I want to hear more about the ketchup wine death. Because WAU

Sara R-C, Saturday, 2 August 2008 00:09 (fifteen years ago) link

hey remy, is the residency stuff all sorted for your sis' husband now? and yay for being an uncle!

guys this really really big muscly scary gangsta dude just glad-eyed me while i was walking home. i smiled back politely - was that the right thing to do?? nz is so different!

estela, you were right: must stop making eye contact with people :/

Rubyredd, Saturday, 2 August 2008 00:25 (fifteen years ago) link

estela is probably right, but of course I know nothing of this, because in Northfield even the crazies are friendly and primarily harmless

Sara R-C, Saturday, 2 August 2008 01:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i always politely say hi when people are eyeing or say hi. if they say something lewd then fuck them, but i try to be polite otherwise. i think it works well.

i think the fog gould possibly be the worst movie i've ever seen.

in other news,

Sara R-C, Saturday, 2 August 2008 03:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, I would try to get my funny picture of John and FB up on flickr (and then here), except continuing problems with my ISP prevent me from progressing.

I couldn't decide tonight whether listening to A. try to help the support technician was pathetic or way cool. (Yeah... A. is good with the tech stuff, but shouldn't the people who work in these places know more than him?)

I can has birthday party participation. (In that it was not my birthday but that of the daughter of a friend.) And she has another party on Sunday.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 2 August 2008 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link

interview was okay i think! except i had to do a 'book test' and don't think i did all that well... fingers crossed...

Rubyredd, Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

wishing good things for you!

i am back home now in my room which i will now refer to as the den of inequity. also i just had the most wonderful leisurely dinner of thai food and wine and am now incredibly sleepy.

tehresa, Sunday, 3 August 2008 03:04 (fifteen years ago) link

If you slept for 14 hours I'm going to feel incredibly envious.

Well, I already am because mmmmm Thai food.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 3 August 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

RR - what was the "book test" like? I'm sending good thoughts to you!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 3 August 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the book test was a list of authors and i had to list titles they had written; a list of titles and i had to fill in the author; then another list of authors and i had to write down where each one would be filed in a book store. then i had to write a paragraph about myself, what makes me interesting etc. etc. i didn't do too well on it.

Rubyredd, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Goodness. I have to say that that sounds kind of silly (the test). You learn most about books by actually working in a bookstore. Also - as to where to shelve the books - usually the books themselves give you a good clue (i.e. a science fiction book will almost often say "science fiction" somewhere on the cover).

Write a paragraph about yourself... okay. Now that's just a little weird. Like applying for COLLEGE.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

When my friend applied for Urban Outfitters in San Francisco last summer, she had to fill out what bands she liked and what magazines she read
Apparently word on the street was MIA and Fader were solid gold answers.

I know, right?, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

luckily, the book test was at end, and during the interview i made sure to tell her all about this specialised book stuff i know, like about a letterpress publisher from the 60s who did some beautiful stuff, black sparrow press, and also a prestigious italian publisher she had never heard of (one point to me!). so i hopefully made it clear that i AM a book person, it's just that my knowledge is kind of all over the place.

Rubyredd, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm sure you impressed them! i remember a cd store in my town that was rumored to have a test like that... it seems so pretentious!

i just spent the last 7 hours cleaning my room and doing laundry. i haven't even started the bathroom yet but i am so gross right now i think that will have to wait for another day...

tehresa, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

7 hours of housework on a Sunday. It's "REST on Sunday" - remember?!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Just kidding - awesome work. You deserve to take a break after that for sure. Also, now I feel like I'd better go get my laundry started.

RR - it sounds like the interview went pretty well anyway. Which is GREAT!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i could only pull that excuse if i adhered to at least 1 other religious principle...

tehresa, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:33 (fifteen years ago) link

how do you spend 7 hours tidying one room? how big is your room? i am assuming you spent many of those hours either watching the room not tidy itself or watching the laundry SPIN.

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

and Sara is right; God is pretty pissed at you for being productive on a Sunday.
