Don't know yet if I can cut work, but I am definitely interested. What time? Maybe I could do a half-day.

Our friend M1ch3ll3 will be in town during the same time-period. I would like to coordinate with her as well, since she will also be going to the fair. I will email the both of you and BB.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 15:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmmmm, sounds fun. Can you put me down for MAYBE? (I would just say "of course," but, you know, kids.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

in a weird weak moment i just bought 'live - throwing copper' on itunes.

remy bean, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

in a more common, sustained weirdness i enjoyed the song 'all over you' for the first time in at least a decade.

remy bean, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

That's the one with "I Alone" on it, right?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

yep. and it was released in 1994, which makes me feel old as dirt.

remy bean, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i respect your right to make these decisions

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

You should have picked up Secret Samadhi instead.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

the earlier stuff was pretty good, as long as you didn't listen to closely to the lyrics, but the later stuff.. jesus god fuck... "when dolphins cry"?????

i liked that song the live singer did with tricky.

in other news: i think i might try venturing out of the house on my own today. can't stay in here forever! i made it to the supermarket on monday, but it's only about a 3 minute walk away. today i'm going to try making it to this cluster of shops about a 15 min walk away. actually it's probably a lot further than that - we were in the car when jordan showed me how to get there.

i'm a little scared.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

You'll be fiiiiine, Rubyredd. It could even be fun!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't be scared, remember with your accent they'll probably think you're Australian* so "that's not a knife" still resonates meaning you are a mugger-free zone!

*I know that you are not and am very much aware that New Zealand is a separate country!

hyggeligt, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i was sitting out on the front step waiting for jordan to get home last night, and this cute little black* kid came up to me on his scooter and started talking to me. he asked me if i was brazilian! i said no, i'm from new zealand and asked if he knew where that was... to which he replied: 'europe!' :) :) :)

*i hope this doesn't sound completely ignorant, but i'm never sure of what the correct thing is to say: is it okay/right to say 'black' or should i be saying 'african-american'. i don't want to sound desperately PC but i don't want to sound racist/rude either :/

hyggeligt, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

*i never say anything but black. african-american is like six syllables too many. that said, i would willingly accept 'light brown' instead of 'latino' or 'colombian-american' were it an acceptable option.

remy bean, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Err towards "African-American"; most people don't care but the ones who do will make your life hell.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah that's what i was worried about. i seem to hear both (through the media) equally.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

unlisted number is calling jordan's cell. i have phobia about answering phones.

should i answer phone if it rings again y/n

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I say go for it. You can always play like you're his professional personal assistant. "May I ask who's calling?" "May I take a message?"

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:46 (fifteen years ago) link

hey sara any approx idea on timing for tonight?

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

'light brown'??

deeznuts, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I am still trying to break older members of my family from using "negro." Seriously, it is still 1952 with some of them.

xp - My meeting is from 4 to 5 and then we (students) are going to eat at Chatterbox. I don't know how long it takes to get from there to your house... so... ??? (What is a good time to aim for? I don't want to be walking up to your door just as you are getting home because I hate it when that happens to me.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 18:59 (fifteen years ago) link

should work fine, i work until 7 (supposedly, this can go radically wrong sometimes). i know you have my #, call it when you are done and if it goes straight to voice mail, i am STILL AT WORK. hopefully not though. hope hope hope.

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

also if you have K's # you can call her as well, she'll be home before i am

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah that's what i was worried about. i seem to hear both (through the media) equally.

That's not surprising. Like I said, it's not a big deal to most people, but for the ones who do care it's a HUGE FUCKING DEAL that's easier to avoid bothering with.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

xp I don't think I have K's number, but will try yours & go from there. It will all be fiiiine...

Dan, so is your recommendation then to tread carefully until you know where a various person stands on what to say? I don't think I've run across anyone to whom it was a big deal, but that's hardly saying anything, as Northfield is nearly as white as Hastings was (well, except the colleges).

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay, I'm leaving in order to get to my meeting on time. I will be forced to ponder these semantic mysteries on my own.

John - see you and K tonight. (I will call first!)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Sara, you're in for a treat. It's a great house.

Pretty much; the people who really care are so emotionally invested in letting you know how much they care that it can totally ruin your day.

Not saying "always say Afro-Am" as much as I'm saying, "if you think you'll have to think about whether you'll cause offense, say Afro-Am".

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

28 min til i can go home!

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

also hey guys, how's it going?

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks dan, that's useful to know - esp since i'm living in a predominantly afro-american neighbourhood.

so i made it out of the house and survived the 'crosswalks' (i don't get how your streets work here and am terrified of being run over). and i bought hostess donettes!! they were okay.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

uh yeah one other thing is that I typed "Afro-Am" but please don't call anyone an "Afro-American" because you will generate lulz

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Good lord, RR, you bring us nice NZ junk food and then you gorge on that foamy plastic BS?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Afro-Am sounds like a great lost airline from the 70's.

xp ha. well yes but if we are talking malt liquor i am a Colt 45 man myself.

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link

have you tried an oh! henry bar yet, ruby, or milk duds?

estela, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i should install a milk duds machine in my home and hire a service provider to refill it on a daily basis

BLACK BEYONCE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Milk Duds are so awesome until you eat a rotten one, then they are the worst idea ever.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 22:35 (fifteen years ago) link

well i was in the goddamn huge supermarket today, from whence i expected avalanches of gorgeous junkfood to fall upon me, but no. i scanned the shelves and there was just nothing very interesting there.
