Sabean got the team back together +/- former A's starters: The 2014 San Francisco Giants

Larry Baer reported the Giants have sold 2.6 million tickets for 2014 and could reach 3 million by Opening Day. He expects the team to sell out every game again this year.

speaking of former A's starters, poor Zito it appears no one what him.

from Jon Heyman, CBS Sports

Barry Zito plans to take some time off, but he isn't retiring.

Curiously, almost nothing was written about Zito this winter, and the reason for that is there's no evidence he actively sought a job. Just the same, Zito isn't ready to call it quits, either, according to people in the know.

There was an early suggestion in a story about Zito taking time off to surf by Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area. Baggarly hypothesized it was possible Zito may take 2014 to "reboot." And that appears to be the case.

There's no word of anything physically wrong with Zito, who had a rough year in 2013 (5-11, 5.74) after bouncing back to post a stellar 15-8 campaign in 2012, when he helped the Giants win a second World Series title in three years, winning the key Game 5 of the NLCS at St. Louis that catapulted San Francisco back into the Series.

Zito is 165-143 with a 4.02 ERA for his career, all performed in the Bay Area with the Giants and A's. The Giants declined an $18-million option for him in 2014 but he still made $126 million on that seven-year deal with San Francisco.

Zito is just 36, so there may be time for yet another comeback if he decides to try it.

watched Vogelsong today seven total runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings. not looking like a good signing...

Bee OK, Monday, 10 March 2014 00:52 (ten years ago) link

You've just guaranteed another year without a World Series. ;_;

i couldn't wait any longer, plus i didn't guarantee anything.

this figures: Marco Scutaro took on-field batting practice for the first time all spring, but the 38-year old isn't certain he will be ready for Opening Day.

Bruce Bochy says Marco Scutaro is 50-50 to start at second base on Opening Night. The calendar says Bochy is way too optimistic.

and Posey is on fire, too bad these games are not counting.

http://blog.sfgate.com/johnshea/2014/03/26/forbes-sf-giants-oakland-as-are-filthy-rich-check-these-numbers/#21888101=0

Would paying Pablo Sandoval really put a dent in the Giants’ vault?

After all, the team is worth a billion dollars.

That’s one BILLION dollars.

The 17th annual Forbes make-the-owners-cringe edition is out with estimates of all teams’ values and revenues, and the Giants are bursting with wealth. They’re among five major-league teams worth $1 billion, ranking fifth on the list of most valuable franchises.

Right behind the Yankees ($2.5 billion), Dodgers ($2 billion), Red Sox ($1.5 billion) and Cubs ($1.2 billion).

For the Giants, it’s a 27 percent increase in value in one year, the highest in the majors, according to Forbes.

If that’s not enough, the Giants’ primary owner, Charles Johnson, is baseball’s richest owner. Forbes estimates his worth at $7.5 billion.

According to Forbes, the Giants had $316 million in revenues and $53.3 million of operating income, the third most in baseball. The magazine noted they had the third-highest attendance despite a 76-86 record, their worst since 2008.

For as high as the Giants rank in value, their TV deal is only ninth among the 30 teams. Their deal with Comcast, according to Forbes, includes an annual rights fee of $70 million and equity stake of 30 percent.

brimstead, Thursday, 27 March 2014 01:26 (ten years ago) link

Is the scarcity of available 3rd basemen really a justification for such $$$? they don't have anybody in the minors that delivers even replacement level performance, from what i understand

brimstead, Thursday, 27 March 2014 01:32 (ten years ago) link

they have pitching prospects but no hitters

mookieproof, Thursday, 27 March 2014 03:10 (ten years ago) link

pitching prospects seem not good (not ready to go now, at least)

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 04:53 (ten years ago) link

not so fast, i guess

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 05:02 (ten years ago) link

17 runs, 28 hits and 3 errors.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 05:08 (ten years ago) link

Was Posey’s game-winning homer Monday his farthest ever?

That’s what ESPN says in it’s home-run tracker. ESPN has something called “true distance.” And it said his game-winning homer Monday night went 453 feet, his longest ever. It says his previous longest was 443 feet on 7/13/12 at home against Houston.

I’m sorry, ESPN, but I’m going with my eyes and memory here.

On May 22, 2012, at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Posey hit a monster bomb to straightaway center field against Shaun Marcum. It hit the bottom of the scoreboard high above the batters’ eye beyond the 400-foot sign on the center field wall.

Two terrible decisions by the umpires. One that was reviewed and upheld, so the other was challengeable. Very unfortunate for Cain.
