is pitching like fucking God! WTF?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

he's no pat burrell

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i love that he just turned 23 and he's already started 60+ games

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post)Yeah, he only struck him out twice today!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

That pitch count today (114!) worries me a tad, especially this early on. But, hey, go D-Train.

I was kinda hoping the bit after the ellipsis would be "....is fucking in heaven".

Have the Marlins won a non-shutout yet this year?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Burnett didn't pitch a shutout yesterday, did he? I thought it was just a complete game?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

This IS the fourth Marlins complete game though which is pretty crazy (Beckett's first win he only went 6 innings, I believe.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:54 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost:
He definitely looked good but wait a game. As I complained about in 2003, he still throws WAY too many pitches per at-bat (aside from today). That kind of control (namely, a lack of) is troubling.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

He's got two walks in 18 innings. I'm thinking maybe Dontrelle is not the same Dontrelle as the last two years.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

hey has anyone seen that bay area espn advert for the a's? its got two oakland rookies (sorry, couldn't place 'em), anyway, one of the guys is a pitcher and he's wondering how to get better movement on his pitches, to which the other dude replies "maybe we should ask the old guy". so they walk off the field back through the dugout and in this dimly lit room into the back of the stadium, where barry zito's sitting in a corner carving something with a swiss army knife and looking v. stoic. they ask him and the question and he gives them so bullshit zen answer like "movement is a product relative to motion" and the rookies just stand there going "whooooa."

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

argh sorry that fell apart near the end - i blame the cold meds. you get the gist.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:00 (nineteen years ago) link

go here:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=7133&context=pitching

In 2005:
Huge jump in pitches per PA (which should come down when this page is updated)
Declining K/9 rate (which should go up with the update)
His BAA is about the same as 03-04, his OBP/SLG radically dropped (he's been pitching at home (pitcher's park), no? wait til he goes on the road)
His GB/FB has really spiked up (which is a good thing).

(and no mark, i don't have TV).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

G!, did you see his pitch total for his first start (A SHUTOUT) this year? Only 97! He might've turned a corner, & turned it TIGHT. [xpost to what AinSF said]

BTW: 5 wins, 4 complete games, FOUR SHUTOUTS (one combined, on Opening Day).

And props to my boy Burrell - he got one of the Phils' three hits!

I'm glad to see a marketable character pitching well, and that the Mets will miss him this weekend.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, you.

Since Mark brought it up - saw another A's promo last night. Promo director's talking w/ Kendall (suited up) on the field. "OK, so what's gonna happen is Eric Chavez is going to barrel into you at top speed, then Ken Macha will douse you with gasoline, and then Nick Swisher ..." (dressed in fire-protection gear) "... will light you up. Hold onto the ball." "But what about the bulldozer?" Kendall asks, pointing to one waiting on the 3rd base side. "Don't worry about that yet." Cut away for the shilling, then cut back to the bulldozer @ home plate, & a dirty Kendall crawling out from underneath. Fun stuff.

Something tells me the A's hired the folks that did the Mariners' "Mojo Dojo" campaign from a while back.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha can someone link these promos? They sound great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Dontrelle only threw 97 pitches in the shutout before this one.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

oh i forgot the kicker to the zito promo:

rookie #1: (nudges his buddy) "hey how old is this guy anyway?"
rookie #2: (disbelievingly) "twenty... six..."

rookie #1: (eyes like saucers) "i wonder if he pitched to the babe."

Earl, I already mentioned that upthread! Plz fake reading the posts if you're not going to read the posts, yo (like I do).

Ya - those J's promos are beyond suck. The main part of the ads are shoddy premises to begin with and then at the end they cut away to these gibbering & spasming marionettes who have nothing to do with what was going on!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

And why are we talking about promos on the Willis thread?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Because we pretty much exhausted the Willis topics.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

At least until he pitches again.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

We can talk about other Cubs farmmates though! Prior with a shutout through five on the first stop on his 2005 comeback tour.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks in large part to Willis and Beckett's 0.00 ERA's, the Fish's team ERA is 1.36 through nine games -- yet they're only 5-4. And it's not like they haven't been scoring runs. That's some Bob Gibson-esque crazy shit.

Maybe the Marlins are trying to emulate the Yankees performance in the 1960 World Series, but in assbackwards fashion - instead of 10-2 wins and 3-1 losses, the Marlins are losing 12-10 and winning 4-0.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 15 April 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Wait ... you got it backwards yourself ... they're winning 10-2 and losing 3-1, like the 1960 WS Yankees.

how can d-train still be in the minors while SHIRT THIEF MIKE LEAKE is still in the show??

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 6 May 2011 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

With Dontrelle Willis not on the 40 man roster, they would have to make a move there to bring him up. Reds kind of have a log jam on the starting 5, especially with Johnny Cueto coming back next week. Leake has been moved to the bullpen.

I think definitely Dontrelle would be the guy called up if something happens to Chapman or Bill Bray. If Travis Wood continues to struggle, Dontrelle Willis might be given a shot to replace him in the starting five. Reds starting pitching has been pretty bad so far, so if it continues, I think the chance will come.

It wasn't a disaster. Didn't catch much but he seems to be driving toward the plate more aggressively. Frequently opened up/missed high and outside to righties like he has the past few years.

Steve Aoki Newsletter (Andy K), Sunday, 10 July 2011 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

Why did he get pulled in the fifth? 69 pitches, 51 strikes(!), one walk, five Ks, five hits allowed (all singles)...

That was probably his best start in four years.

Steve Aoki Newsletter (Andy K), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 10:44 (twelve years ago) link

There wasn't another rain delay AFTER the first inning, right? That first-inning delay would not have been a factor since it occurred during the top of the inning, while the Reds were up.
