The one that won the thing?

Or another one?

Feel free to answer this question using emotions and irrationality, it need not be proven by science.

MVP (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 March 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The best baseball team is the one that beats the Yankees.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 March 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Orioles win on logo alone.

BEANTOWN BABY

And I dare say (on paper) (which means SO MUCH) they got better.

Red Sox followed by St. Louis

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 17 March 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to still go with the Yanks. It's the fan in me, but it makes logical sense too. I don't follow the Sox as closely, but from what I do know, the Yanks lost less and gained more in the off season. The Sox were a smidgen better than the Yanks last year, and with the Yanks doing more in the offseason I have to believe they're the better team. Plus I have to assume they'll get more out of Giambi this year, AND I think is coming off a career year. I don't think he'll ever put up numbers like that again.

I think the Yanks are better than saint loo, too. Cards will score runs in bunches but I don't know that they have championship calibre pitching, but again, I don't know who they picked up/lost in the offseason.

The Mets are hugely improved (still no bullpen, though) and I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers Detroit's lineup can muster, so I guess those are my out on a limb wild card picks.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yanks pitching staff is held together with bubble gum and chaw. Brown, Mussina, Flash Gordon and The Unit are are old and have broken down at least once within the past couple of seasons. Pavano and Wright neither have a long enough track record to prove they can repeat what they did last season. If one or two of these guys break down, you are stuck with Tanyon Sturze as the minors are bone dry for help or tradeable players. Rivera is still very good, but has not been as dominating, especially against the Red Sox.

They still have enough pitching to get them to the playoffs, but I still think they could lose to anyone in a short series and have many question marks. The Yanks defense is also a bit questionable up the middle and they don't have near the bench depth that they did when they got those titles in the late 90s. The Yanks got BIG lifts from that bench during that run and I think that gets forgotten.

The Red Sox are the World Champs until someone else says different in October. I think they have a decent chance at winning it again.

The NL is wide open.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yankees made one huge marquis-grabbing move (RANDY JOHNSON), & then did a few other questionable things (signing Carl Pavano & Jaret Wright to long-term deals; snagging Tony Womack, for whatever reason). The bullpen moves they made (getting F-Rod & Stanton) can't hurt, but that's all in Torre's hands - his bullpen usage pattern last year (Quantrill, Gordon, then Sandman) put the Yankees in the situation to lose the ALCS. Also, they are old old old old. And old.

Meanwhile, the Sox lost their long-time ace (bye Pedro!) and a one-hit wonder (bye Derek!), but did a lot of "little" things to give themselves depth in the rotation (signing Clement, Wells, & Miller, who will hopefully be able to contribute 15+ starts), & also improved their bench depth (swapping Dave Roberts for Jay Payton AND Ramon Vazquez). If anyone played out of their ass for the Sox, it was probably Damon - I can see everyone else producing at the level they did last year. Swapping Cabrera for Renteria is a push (w/ the defensive gap between Cabrera & Renteria hopefully offset by offensive gains), but this is probably as good a team, if not better, than what they took to the World Series last year. Talk to me in two years, and I'll probably be bitching about Varitek's & Renteria's contracts being millstones, but right now, they are the team to beat. And not just because they are the defending World Series Champions.

hey Raposa, the Internet is NOT made of paper, wtf?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S NOT??!?!?!

(I blame the decongestants I've been popping today.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone can lose to anyone in a short series, Earl.

Having Karsay back will help take alot of the load off of Quantril, who started to break down late last year. That snowballed into Gordon and Rivera having to come into games earlier. Add Rodriguez, Stanton and Karsay to last year's bullpen and it looks pretty good to me. I can't blame Torre's using of the pen last because he only had three effective relievers.

We know how close these two teams have been the past two years. Maybe the Yanks' rotation will break down, but maybe the Sox won't hit like they did last year (130 RBI each from Ortiz and Manny? Probably not).

We get 6 games between the teams by April 14, so we'll have a good idea by then.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Yanks pitching staff is held together with bubble gum and chaw."

You mean as opposed to sutures and goiter? I don't understand what kind of logic takes two pitching staffs of comparable talent, subtracts Pedro from one and adds Randy Johnson to another, and determines that the former is better.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Just keep rooting for the A's, Adam.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a neat trick, Doc - it's like the Red Sox lost Pedro and didn't bother replacing him! Smoooooooooooth!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

In other words: would people wise up to Matt Clement!?!?!!!?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yanks may have a better pithing staff than the Sox, I didn't really make that claim. The Unit was a good signing, but the rest of the staff have some serious questions when it comes to health, performance or both. The Unit himself was banged up pretty bad in 2003.

Either way the Red Sox are the World Champs until October.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

True enough. And there are a boatload of reasons to go back and forth on RJ/Wright/Pavano vs. Wells/Clement/Miller. But the CW out of Boston seems to be that it's the Yankee staff that is disadvantaged in the health/age department. Hello? The Sox' opening day starter is a 41-year-old tub of goo with chronic back problems. And why doesn't Schilling's injury count? Because it's his ankle? Guy's 38 years old. I just don't get it.

Mea culpa: the Red Sox are Wild Card champions until October.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

These 2004 World Series rings say you're lying, Doc.

Staffs (as I see them):
NYY - Johnson | Mussina | Pavano | Wright | Brown
BOS - Schilling | Clement | Wells | Arroyo | Miller / Wakefield

And please note the following injury math that's behind the CW:

38-yr-old w/ sketchy ankle +
41-yr-old tub of surprisingly durable goo w/ back issues +
29-yr-old stud w/ rotator cuff problems
>
42-yr-old w/ sketchy knee +
40-yr-old w/ back problems & anger management issues +
30-yr-old one-hit-wonder rotator-cuff-tear victim/survivor trading The Bestest Pitching Coach for the Big Unforgiving City & $$$$

I really hope Arroyo's not going to the bullpen while Miller's healthy.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Please note that if my faith in Clement isn't reciprocated w/ the proper numbers, I'm hunting him down & pulling his groin.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

erm..

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What? Are YOU Matt Clement?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

If I say yes will you pull my groin?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Not if you keep guys off the basepaths!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta say Matt Clement looks like the kind of guy who'd be into groin pulling.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what you mean, but I think I agree.

i like how they think they can just slip "oh hey guyz we're called the 'robots of doom' now" in there w/no explanation.

like clowns passing out candy wearing blindfolds (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

it also seems that they are a particularly bad baseball team, even allowing for the fact they are british

i mean, the kind of team that gallantly loses 10-0 amid condescending praise

and they are called the robots of doom

it's almost like they're begging for a movie script to be written
