Anyone else still pissed about the prospects Dombrowksi has traded over the last year and a half? The Sale trade looks nice in a vacuum—for how much it hurts to give up Moncada and Kopech, I believe it was a fair deal, good for both sides—but takes on a different character once you consider the Pomeranz and Kimbrel trades. If the team still had Espinoza, Margot, and Guerra, losing Kopech and Moncada wouldn't be as big of a deal. But bad trades, even if they're viewed as relatively minor at the time, can make the blockbusters less appealing.
I'm probably just still angry about those earlier two trades. I mean, why trade for Kimbrel, an expensive reliever coming off the worst season of his career in San Diego? And the Pomeranz move was pure panic.
Nothing I hate more than a messy, expensive club. Whenever the Sox find an opportunity to streamline the team, they always prefer to gum it back up.
― Handsome Bookor, Sunday, 9 April 2017 12:26 (seven years ago) link
the red sox don't have a place in the outfield for margot. guerra hit .202/.264/.325 last year in the california league. espinoza had a 4.49 ERA in low A last year and just went on the DL with 'forearm tightness'. (guerra and espinoza were both extremely young for their leagues, but still.) you can say that boston should have gotten more than kimbrel and pomeranz for them, but it's not like they were going to be of service any time soon, if ever.
dombrowski's entire reason for existing is to trade prospects, and that's what management wanted after finishing in last place in three of four seasons. the sox are young, cheap and awesome in the outfield and short and they're using their evil empire money to fill in the rest. seems reasonable
they're never going to be not expensive. as for messy, idk -- injuries happen and you address them as best you can. it kind of seems like you're rooting for the wrong team? perhaps you should be a pirate fan; then you would never have to worry about insane veteran free-agent deals gone awry

just saying dombrowski had reason and mandate to trade those prospects isn't really sufficient--moving from a gm like cherington to a gm like dombrowski you get to empty the chamber over the course of 3 or 4 deals and if they aren't the right 3 or 4 deals it's a disaster. i'm pretty nervous about the returns so far.

i could give a flying fuck about payrolls as long as they're spent well, regardless of the sum; it's why beane was (still is?) so highly regarded. if the sox were poor and had a good team, i would be happy. they happen to be rich as hell, albeit often enough operating beyond basic "throw-money-at-the-issue" parameters to be noteworthy, as seen w/ their farm development.

Mel: What degree of moral turpitude do you assign the Red Sox for their electronic sign stealing? Do you believe that Farrell did not know it was happening? Dave Cameron: No way Farrell didn’t know. In terms of moral turpitude, they broke the rules, they knew they were breaking the rules, and they did it anyway, so there’s some guilt here, but as far as infractions go, this isn’t that big a deal. Sign stealing isn’t even against the rules. It’s just the method they used that is problematic.
Bork: Heyman thinks the Red Sox should forfeit all their wins against the Yankees this year. What’s your hot take on punishment for the Red Sox? Dave Cameron: They should be forced to connect to an internet that only has Jon Heyman columns on it.

If it’s the second, care to guess how many playoff apps with no series wins Dombrowski makes before being let go?
Dave Cameron: Their analytics department has been one of the smallest, most underfunded in baseball for years, even before Dombrowski got there. When everyone else was staffing up, hiring developers, and modernizing their infrastructure, the Red Sox stayed put and got passed by.

That's an amazing read for any Jays fan. Price did nothing but say and do the right things for the few months he was here, and he's on the short list of Jays where the city just immediately fell in love with him. I believe he left without an offer from the club, so there wasn't even any fallout there--most fans were mad at management.

to a certain extent i'm skeptical of writers' complaints -- it's not the player's job to write your story for you with amazing quotes and insights -- but it seems like price's method of ingratiating himself with the team is to be an asshole to all outsiders. and people who *aren't* assholes don't need to do it that way
