Surveillance Posts on Jeffrey Loria's Front Company for Laundering Cocaine and Stolen Art Profits: The 2015 Miami Marlins

PECOTA predicts a 4-win improvement to reach .500 for the first time since 2009. getting latos and dee gordon is good, ichiro is kinda cool if not necessarily good, starting rotation ain't bad. on the other hand, jeffrey loria is jeffrey loria and i doubt anyone on ILB specifically wants him to succeed in any way whatsoever - a very rational stance

the force of goodness and light known as giancarlo stanton will apparently wear this rad helmet to protect his shining countenance

tbrr this isn't exactly a team i root for, mostly due to loria, but they are not without their weirdly fascinating/awesome aspects, like the fact that HOLY SHIT THIS GUY IS COMING BACK JOSE FERNANDEZ IS THE GREATEST

Great thread title.

It's hard to root against the Marlins, they have so many interesting players. Too bad about fucking Loria though.

I've always wondered how and when the Marlins would utilize the Miami Vice theme into their stadium music. It would be a good walk up music, but I got to figure that it is used for rally music or something else in the game. I'd be surprised if it wasn't used.

otoh, marlins pitching combined to allow 21 hits, 11 of which were allowed by former dodger (who decidedly did not want to leave LA) dan haren in 4.1 innings, haren is obvs a dodgers double agent

Jennings coached the baseball team at Davidson High School in Mobile Alabama.

johnny crunch, Monday, 18 May 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

Rosenthal:

Loria has treated Jennings extremely well, awarding him, along with former GM Larry Beinfest, an eight-year contract through 2015 at the end the 2007 season. Jennings, in turn, is extremely loyal to Loria. My strong hunch is that Jennings is taking this job out of obligation, not because he considers it a particularly good idea.

It is not a good idea. It is an idea that will elicit scorn throughout the industry, even though Jennings is one of its more popular members. It also is an idea that will invite scrutiny beyond even what I described Sunday night in my column about Loria, and how he will need to answer to his fellow owners following his dismissal of Mike Redmond as manager.

I want to know – a lot of people will want to know – how the Marlins can hire Jennings as a manager without considering a minority candidate who actually might be qualified for the position. Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. is one such candidate. Blue Jays coach DeMarlo Hale is another. And I could go on.

#Marlins president said "this happened organically". I guess it's true, if you throw the word organic on anything people will buy it.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:22 (eight years ago) link

forgive my ignorance – but is there a specific reason Rosenthal is going on about minority candidates?

selig kinda made it mandatory to interview a minority candidate for new jobs (manager and even gm too?) and its been selectively enforced over time..

I dont thinkt he minority oversight angle is the proper one to run down, but Im no 4'10" baseball writer either

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 18 May 2015 23:58 (eight years ago) link

i don't think it's anything specific to this situation, more that mlb only has two minority managers and it's hard enough for minority coaches to get consideration even without losing jobs to entirely unqualified white guys.

among current managers, ventura and counsell had no coaching experience at all, ausmus had managed the israeli national team, kevin cash was a bullpen coach for two years, walt weiss coached a high school team, matheny was a roving minor league instructor. several of those guys had long been thought of as managerial candidates and obviously had playing experience, but there are plenty of black/latin guys who have serious experience and don't seem to get considered.

part of the problem, i think, is that being a minor league manager doesn't exactly prepare you to manage a major league team. it's a very different job, and if you're good at it, you get the label of being a 'development guy'. but unless some (white) owner takes a flier on a non-white guy with no coaching experience, what are you gonna do?

huh weird, kinda surprised at keri for that but tbf he was far from the only one bullish on the fish. baumann picking them never surprised me bc he's, like, a moron and stuff, dude legit used "intangibles" unironically in his AL wildcard preview to justify picking the Yankees

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 10:57 (eight years ago) link

I wouldn't judge writers on preseason picks; most of the analytics-savvy ones HATE writing that column, it seems, cuz everyone usually knows what the most statistically likely teams to win are, and that's boring. So they have to throw in an offbeat choice or two.

RJ Anderson at BP on Ichiro:

There are two ways to view this deal. From a baseball perspective, it's rotten. This is Wade Boggs with the Devil Rays all over again, to the extent that you wonder if the Marlins intend to retire his number sometime after he collects his 3,000th hit. There's nothing wrong with teams co-opting or embracing milestone chases, but there has to be a facade of prioritizing winning; otherwise it comes across as a cheap PR stunt, as this signing does. It doesn't help that the Marlins have earned a bad reputation over the years on these things, nor that Ichiro ended the season with the sixth-highest salary on the roster.

What's then is the best defense of this deal? That, from a fan's perspective, it's cool....
