Supposedly down to the Jays and Royals for Cueto. Mixed feelings on whether I want the Jays to get him. We're 5.5 out, 3.0 for a wild-card, and who knows what they've offered.].

The Astros got Kazmir for very little (in a trade within their division no less). Someone is going to similarly overpay for Cueto. Having said that, I think the Jays have to make this trade, it'll cost them Sanchez or Norris but we have 1.5 decent starting pitchers and the offense is built to win now.

... Or next year. Agree the Jays need an upgrade to the rotation. But Norris would be too high a price IMHO.

Can't wait for Norris to have a hard luck 9-13 record with the 2017 Blue Jays!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 26 July 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link

If the Jays had been leading or no worse than a game out, I would have been all for getting Cueto at some cost. They're 5.5 out, though; Cueto cannot make that up. If he pitches well, he's worth, what, two or three games the rest of the way? (Teams in the Jays' position who make these moves seem to be putting faith in those dreaded intangibles--that it'll inspire the rest of the team to make up the other three games.) Even if they got (or get) into the playoffs, I just can't see them getting very far.

I think it's a great move for KC; for us, I had my doubts.

I bought tickets last week for Toronto-K.C. Thursday night; just realized that we'll probably see Cueto. The crowd should be interesting if he shuts down Toronto...

#Mets are "making progress" on a trade for OAK's Tyler Clippard, who would be a hell of a setup man for Familia.

lol whuuuuh

the most overt god-bothery shit the sox have at present is a. everything daniel nava ever does ever and b. ortiz and x either crossing themselves or looking to up DA HEAVENS after offensive successes. when schilling was around, not everyone calling him "father curt" meant it as a compliment (on the team and among fans iirc)

rockies management is a nightmare, but i don't really see what they did that was so wrong here. tulo wanted out, he got out, and they didn't send him to a place he didn't want to go (new york).

being traded is weird and difficult, but probably more so for the other guys involved than the one making $20m a year. and they probably didn't get personal visits from the owner/gm asking for their blessing either

Final deal: Ben Zobrist to Kansas City, Sean Manaea and Aaron Brooks to Oakland. Kansas City is getting more than $2M from the A's, too.

J Stark:

The Philadelphia Phillies have told several teams interested in acquiring Cole Hamels that they'd like to get their "best" offers by Wednesday, sources told ESPN.com.

The team would then make a decision about where -- and whether -- to trade him.

The Phillies have continued to speak with a large number of teams -- a group known to include the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox -- about Hamels.

However, sources said that in the case of about half of that group, the Phillies initiated those talks in an attempt to reopen discussion about players whom those clubs had said previously they'd be unwilling to trade.

Re-followed Olney's Twitter account and was reminded that he replies with stuff like, "So let me get this straight, @fartsplat420, you really think Buddy Biancalana was a better infielder than Frank White?"
