And he's batting 8th today!

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Holy shit what a wild ass game!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 September 2005 00:54 (eighteen years ago) link

The Marlins bullpen really tanked it today.

Still in Dontrelle's start before last against the Astros, he jacked a 429 foot homer!

Dontrelle and Carlos Zambrano are both good enough hitting pitchers to bat up in the lineup. Zambrano is also having a great year at the plate hitting .292 and legged out a triple last week.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 18 September 2005 03:34 (eighteen years ago) link

On Thursday he hooks up with Pedro and the spoilerrific Mets.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Seems like everyone is trying to avoid winning the NL Cy Young right now!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually that's not true. Willis just got unlucky. He still pitched a very good game. And Clemens just pitched a great game. So nevermind.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

What Saturday's Marlin collapse proved: Todd Jones hates black people.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:16 (eighteen years ago) link

To be fair to Jones, the Marlins made FOUR errors that inning which borders on the ridiculous. Most pitchers would suck if they had to make 7+ outs in an inning.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard that Juan Pierre let two balls fall in front of him for base hits that should've been outs, too - are those included in the error total?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Beats me (although I saw he made at least one error although I think it was a throwing one.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Sep 20 Fox Sports Midwest reports Florida Marlins manager Jack McKeon said he's kicking around the idea of having SP Dontrelle Willis pitch on three days rest the rest of the season because he wants to see if he can make it to 25 wins.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 01:50 (eighteen years ago) link

??!?!? Jack McKeon you are a nutcase.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Or just an old guy who got lucky two years ago.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Or both!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Guess who's batting 7th tonight for the Marlins?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Bobby Crosby?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Jack McKeon?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:52 (eighteen years ago) link

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last pitcher to bat seventh or higher was Montreal's Steve Renko, who did it on Aug. 26, 1973, and went 2-for-3 against San Diego.

When Willis heard McKeon's plan, he said he was shocked.

``I couldn't believe it,'' he said. ``Seventh? I want the lineup card. I don't think anybody will believe that. I was nervous about it. I had fun. The guys were making fun of it, saying he would have me bat leadoff.''

He went 1-4 with a Sac.

the nationals should sign him to play shortstop

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 23 September 2005 03:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Be sure to revive this around September Alex, increasing BAA and decliinng K/9 are not good trends!

Dontrelle Willis Career ERA:
Pre-Allstar 2.64
Post-Allstar 4.30

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 23 September 2005 12:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not sure what we're arguing about anymore!

Could it be agreed by all that Dontrelle:
1) occasionally pitches like "A GOD WTF"
2) tends to pitch more like "A GOD WTF" during the beginning of the season
3) struggles with bouts of inconsistency
4) is "good" (ie, a top 7 NL pitcher with lots of upside)
5) has the benefit of pitching in a pitchers' park

Because I think we're all on the same page if so!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 September 2005 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Just thought, since September is almost over, I'd revive it. No further agenda.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 23 September 2005 13:02 (eighteen years ago) link

He's getting slapped around a bit today but he's batting 8th.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:09 (eighteen years ago) link

THREE FUCKING ERRORS. Jeez nice job helping the guy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:16 (eighteen years ago) link

9 Runs, 5 Earned before he got pulled in the 4th.

seven months pass...
Bad, bad managing today:

Dontrelle looks great through 6IP and about 90 pitches with Florida up 5-1... but then gets into trouble in the 7th at around 100 pitches with the game tied. Girardi then leaves him in for the 8th and he gives up a homer and then puts 2 guys before he gets taken out.

A Grand Total of 8 ERs which would have been 1-3 if he'd been taken out around 90-95 pitches. Is Florida's bullpen that bad?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 00:39 (eighteen years ago) link

No, he's just been watching Joe Torre manage a bullpen for the last two years...

Apr. 15, 2006 - 10:04 a.m. ET
Owner Jeffrey Loria said Friday that rumors of the Marlins potentially trading Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera are "ridiculous."

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

of course he would say that! he's such a trustworthy guy after all.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
The good Dontrelle Willis FINALLY made an appearance in the Bay Area (a ray of hope as SF is rumored to be in the D-Train hunt): a 6 hit/3BB/3K complete game.

PacBell/SBC/AT&T Park is home to his worst career splits which include a 1-2 record (in 4 starts), 9.00 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a .322 BAA.

Those stats do not include the 03 NLDS playoffs where Dontrelle made a relief appearance at Pac Bell, giving up 2 hits and recording one out.

Question for Marlins fans or stat-geeks:

Is Dontrelle's "poor performance" this season actually the result of Marlins mgmt. selling off their infield (cf, Brandon Webb in 2004)?

I guess I could look at his G:F ratio or BABIP-allowed, any other ways of validating this theory?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

To my knowledge, Ramirez/Uggla/Cabrera/Jacobs have been adequate infielders. Haven't checked the stats, though.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah-ha, that's what I meant to call the phenomenon: "Rookie Infielder Syndrome". Precisely what happened to Webb.

I read somewhere that Cabrera's defense this year ranks towards the bottom of the NL. Those other guys have bats, but as usually the case with infielders with big bats is that you give up a lot of D.

I wish I had him on my HACKING MASS team.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:15 (fifteen years ago) link

The last time I saw a pitcher this out of sync, it was the "staff" of my dad's slow-pitch softball team after having a few Ankiel.

Andy K, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought Hacking Mass was based off players expected to be good.

:-( otm

bnw, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 14:40 (fifteen years ago) link

It's based off players expected to be good by their organizations for little or no reason.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah basically you want to pick players who are lousy, but who managers put out there every day (or every five days) anyway.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

So Jason Kendall, Juan Pierre, Steve Trachsel, etc. . .

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Willis sent to class-A Lakeland.

Andy K, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

trachsel was just dfa'd!

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Part of me can't even believe Trachsel lasted this long.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

The other part won't be surprised when the Reds pick him up and start him in place of Johnny Cueto.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Everything about Trachsel lasts way too long.
